Prequel to 'The Thing'

One could argue that about a lot of films and their sequels. I don't mind that it is the same because it being a semi-reboot/prequel is fine by me, show the next generation how cool this type of terror is. (as long as they keep it like the originals paranoia horror)

I disagree. First saying because there is a black guy....? There are white guys too in it, should make no difference, yes there is a black man, but there are white people in it too.

Second, flamethrowers were there because they were in the original, they found the burned bodies at the camp, so they probably had the same kind of tools as the did the other camp for digging up the thing out of the ice. That is kinda like saying its lame that Star Wars PT used lightsabers as well.

Location, ya it is the same, but that was to be expected, it takes place in the same area, again like Star Wars we go back to Tatooine and many of the other same places. I don't know what you expected with that, though it seems we get to be more in the ship this time which is cool.

And dogs? Ya they were there again same similar base, that was established in the originals, and remember the thing arrives as a dog in the first one, so they need dogs not only logistically but that is what the original lead into. One could argue that it was always going to look like the original, and it kinda is a love letter/prequel at the same time.

Again it may borrow a lot from it, all that matters if they have interesting characters, and the paranoia feel, then I'm fine with it. I hope it the best, yes it could end up being bad I'm not denying that. But the reasons you used really don't hold much water to me, I just don't know what you really expected.

How about two black guys? :cmad::awesome:

I was aware of this being a prequel and taking place right before the original. I was fine with that. But it looks like it adds nothing new at all. I'll admit it's a trailer so they may want to be playing up on the original but it just doesn't give the film its own identity at all.

I haven't watched the original in two years so I don't remember a lot of the details. So I'll forgive the flame throwers and such. But with the dogs I was always under the assumption, they brought their own dogs when they got to the base. Do we really need to see the dogs again though?

It just looks bland and too much like the original, judging from the trailer. It may be unfair, but it's what we got so far. I'm fine with the paranoia, and if they get that right, and whatever happens is good then it will be forgiven, but that trailer did nothing to make it look like its own thing. I don't like the same music being used either. I just hope they don't try to copy what Carpentor did.

From the beginning:

The location = fine
the prequel idea = fine

I would be fine with the location and the other things if they weren't so damn similar looking to the original. But all of those similarities mixed in with eachother irritates me. It just doesn't look like they made the effort to differentiate themselves from the original.

The sequel tv movie was such a great idea. It actually was good surprisingly.

I see where you are coming from, and understand the concerns, however I like the look of it, but I could see it falling into bad territory I do agree.

The sequel was nice, too bad it never happened. But I love the Antarctica setting as well, something about it I always liked.

Can't wait to check out the trailer when I get home. I'm not too worried about the complaints from the trailer though since I didn't expect this to come anywhere close to being as good as Carpenter's film.

Yeah it may not be as good as JC's film ....but the " complaints " are mostly hafe-assed.....the trailer was exactly what i expected...i look forward to seeing this.

I obviously haven't seen it yet, but some of those complaints I don't doubt. Mainly the one on how the film has that same look that most horror films have these days. I'll check it out in an hour or so and see for myself.

It looks....unnecessary. Not necessarily a bad trailer, it just look like its the exact same thing (no pun intended) as the first one.

Not really...you can do SO much. The franchise could be HUGE if you let it.

Just saw the trailer and I'm not impressed really. I'll check it out when it hits Netflix. The original is one of my favorite films and I feel this is going to be too similar and have a been there, done that kind of feel.

Quite excited about this film. I was wondering when they were going to release the trailer.

Looks pretty good for a film of this nature. The cast is fairly strong, and what was shown in the trailer was intriguing.

And I say this as a fan of Carpenter's film.

Sadly, I'm one of the few that has yet to see the original (I know, I know... I plan on watching it soon) so I don't know how much this does or doesn't look like it. But I liked the trailer. Great to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead in what looks to be a solid lead role.

Watch the original Rows!

Digital is part of it, but also color correction and lighting has a lot to do with it as well. You're right though, most movies seem soulless and standard, like every film is copying off the other. I agree. It's got to stop.

Make something look unique and fit the atmosphere. There is something to having a film look rough around the edges.

Yes, very much so!

you're in for a treat, it still holds up IMO.

Trailer's great. It's basically an extended version of what I saw at NY Comic-Con last fall. Can't WAIT to see this!

I saw it for the first time around a month or so ago. It was just one of those "classics" I never bothered to see. I decided to watch it with a blank slate other than just knowing it was "good" and that this prequel was being made. I was not disappointed.

Yup, so do I. I don't find it to be insulting or a carbon copy either.

Even today the "original" is a hard movie for me to watch alone in the dark.
