Yo peeps ! Some guys can do it all themselves,
that is write and draw some of the most amazing
comics we've ever seen. But who's the best.
( so no Alan Moore, no Grant Morrison, those guys can
write, but these guys can do it all they are are the OMAC's of the
comic book world... and Byrne did OMAC, man it was cool, he killed Hitler and ....
anyway, on to the thread. )
Time to decide, who's the number one
comic book writer-artist of all time.
Some suggestions IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.
(Note: this is superhero comic books, not Tintin, Asterix, or any of that Crumb stuff)
1) John Byrne (Superman, NextMen, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight)
2) Bill Willingham (Elementals...anyone remember that one ? Fables)
3) Frank Miller ( Batman, Sin City, 300 and lots of ultra cool stuff...except his directorial stuff, that's awful )
4) Todd McFarlane (Spawn, Spider Man)
5) Walt Simonson (Thor, best Thor of all time)
6) Jack Kirby (New Gods, and more other characters than we can count)
7) Jim Starlin ( Dreadstar, man that was the way Star Wars was supposed to be)
8) Howard Chaykin ( American Flagg, Blackhawk) to be honest I never read his stuff
but people seem to really like him, so I put him on my list.
9) Mike Mignola (Hellboy....hell yeah!)
10) Dave Sim (Cerberus, okay, I never really liked it, but I have to admit
it's clever, and I'd be snubbing a fellow Canadian)
11) Keith Giffen (legion of super heroes, Justice League )
12) Erik Larsen (Spider Man, Savage Dragon)
Now, this appears to be a very sexist list, so if I missed some great female
artist/writers PLEASE let me know. I don't care what gender, colour or
orientation a person is, if their art/writing is great, that's all that
matters.
Anyway, no doubt I missed dozens of great artist/writers, and yes, my list is
very mainstream.
So post away my friends and tell me about your favourite artist/writer and why they occupy that special place in your comic book hall of fame.
For me, it's Byrne. What the guy did with Xmen, Fantastic Four, Superman, just magic. He took well-established characters who were a bit tired, and breathed life into them again. While he didn't spare the tragedy, he never descended into the darkness that Alan Moore plunges so many of his characters into.
Miller is a very close second. The Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year one are IMO the best Batman comics ever.
Perhaps if Miller had done more work on some of my other favourite characters.....and never written the Dark Knight strikes again (ugh !) or directed the Spirit (barf !) then he'd be number one.
Peace out folks, look forward to your posts.
