BrianWrote:
Will you be approaching this from the realm of reality (like Warren Ellis' run on the title, or from the realm of fantasy (like just about everyone else who's ever written the title)?

Jon Favreau:

Reality.

In the context of the comic book, which era should we expect to see?

Jon Favreau:

Present day.

Film Critic SaysWrote:
1. Do you prefer the circle or diamond shape on the chest?

2. Will you be doing video blogs like Bryan Singer did for Superman Returns and Peter Jackson did for King Kong?

Thanks,

FilmCritcSays

Jon Favreau:

1. I prefer the circle (the way he looked when I was a kid), but the diamond might look cooler. Dunno yet.

2. Perhaps. We'll document everything. Don't know what we'll do with it yet.

My question's for Jon are,

(1) You made a point of saying that the villian in Iron Man wouldn't be magic based or mutated. Would you still be willing in a future film to use a character like Mandarin, who is considered Iron Mans greatest arch-enemy?

Jon Favreau:

I can't imagine ever presenting Mandarin in the way he first appeared in Tales of Suspense in the sixties. I think it would blow the reality of the movie. That isn't to say, however, that we would not draw from these characters. I just think we have to make choices in tone as well as overcome the inconsistencies of the forty years of the books.

This one came up late...

Um, hey there Jon. I know everyones been asking you about plot/casting/costume, but I just wanted to know, are you excited? I mean, if it was me, I would be so pumped. What are your thougts on the project? Are your family excited for you? Just thought it would make a change from the normal Q's. Cheers.

Jon Favreau:

I can't tell you how much I look forward to going to work each day. The sad truth about making movies is most people never take the time to just enjoy what they're doing. There's always something to worry about. You always want things to move forward. Each day presents challenges you push to get through. Before you know it, you're done filming and you're relieved. Then you're anxious to edit and post it and get your effects right. Then it's a mad dash to make your date. Then you scour the reviews and feedback and then the box office opening. Then you wait to see if it has legs and makes money. You get a few rushes of satisfaction at the premiere and with each piece of good news, but for the most part there's uncertainty. There's a lot of worry and anxiety. And even if it all works out well, by the time you realize it, it's all over.

What I've learned over the course of my career is to stop and enjoy each step of the process. It's easy to find things to worry about, but most of the time there's a lot to enjoy and appreciate. I have to say that it is so great to walk into the Marvel offices and look at all the artwork and read through all that has been written and know that this can be something

I think it's awesome how Jon gives the fans open feedback:up: I wish more directors would do that.

so, i wonder how he (jon) plans to 'show emotion' through the mask... he said there'd be no 'judge dredd' or 'robocop-esque' mask, and he more or less said there'd be no unmasking, when someone asked if there'd be an 'in-helmet-cam' he replied with 'you're getting warmer'...

hopefully they don't go with an animatronic mask, or y'know, a mask that moves... what are your guy's thoughts about how they can show emotion through the mask?

personally, i don't think they need to, if they get a good enough actor. i mean, i think hugo weaving deserves a friggin' academy award for v for vendetta, with the amount of emotion he showed, without ever showing his face. you always knew what he was thinking, and feeling, and that says quite a bit.

but anyways, how do you guys think they should do it?

You can't show emotion through the mask. However when he lands they can show it, or they can show it through his actions. Favreau can get creative with how they film it to zoom in on Iron Man and then suddenly you in a first person perspecive hearing him breathing and talking to himself, etc...You don't need to see his face to show emotion.

i voted nine for iron man so far.

I voted Iron Man as well, but he trail's Indy and Bat's, but a large margine, it will be tough to over take those two films in 2008, but as long as Iron man performs well at the box office, things will take care of themselves.

I asked Jon about the Comic-Con and well...here's his response:

I'm going to participate in the Marvel panel at Comicon on Saturday. We'll come up with something fun but, keep in mind, we're two years out so don't expect too much.

We've just approved an "Ironworks" tee shirt for the Paramount booth. I guess they're going to have tee shirts with different Paramount movies on them. The Iron Man one is very understated and cool. The numbers will be limited each day, so keep that in mind if you're a swag hag.

All in all, I want to get my feet wet. Next year will be the big one for Iron Man.

-Jon Favreau

Cool, wish I was going to comic-con, love to get my hands on one of those tee's.

I'll try to grab more than 1 tee and if I do I'll auction it off here or something...for free to whoever comes up with the best scoop on the film before the end of 2006...besides me of course. I won't pay for shipping though. :)

3.S.H.E.I.L.D or A.I.M.?

4. Would you like to incorporate a POV display for Ironman ala Robocop style?

5. Do you get free comics now?

Jon Favreau:

1. Not yet, but I told them IM3 better be called "The Avengers."
2. No
3. DoD
4. Yes
5. Yes. Toys too.

Here's Jon's response to potential taglines on upcoming onesheets. LOL

Here's another tagline:

1. Oh hell yeah!! Could anyone ask him if he isn't BSing about that, then now that the Hulk is Marvel movie property, what are the chances of there being a Hulk vs Iron Man with the Hulkbuster armor in IM3?

3. What the heck is DoD?

"Who do I have to blow up to get a drink around here?"
LOL!

I just suggested this could be a cool technology for Jon to incorporate into the suit somehow. How cool would it be if Stark suspected a specific place was being used for some sort of industrial espionage that he could paint the wall of the building with this stuff and see through it as if it wasn't there with a special visor. Hell even if it isn't used it's cool:

A scientist at Tokyo University has developed a coat which makes those who wear it appear invisible.
Professor Susumu Tachi told the BBC's East Asia Today that the coat was made with a special type of "retro-reflective" material, which acts as a photographic screen.

If we paint a wall, then we can see behind it. Even if there is no window in the room, we can see the scenery outside

Professor Susumu Tachi

"We have a camera behind the person wearing the coat," Mr Tachi told the BBC.

The image from the camera is then projected onto the coat, so that the wearer appears virtually transparent when seen through a viewfinder.

Beforehand "it looks like a grey coat," Mr Tachi said. "But when we project the image onto it we can see a very clear picture of what is projected."

Medical application

The real purpose of the new technology is not to make a person appear see-through, however, but to augment reality, Mr Tachi said.

"Usually, virtual reality makes a computer-generated world with no direct relation to the real environment," he said. "What we would like to do is put virtual things in the real environment."

A prime example of this is in the medical field.

When surgeons are operating, they are unable to see any parts of their patient obscured by their own hands and equipment - a problem Mr Tachi hopes will be overcome by his invention.

"The surgeon sees the patient as if they are transparent, and can see the whole body structure," Mr Tachi said.

Another application is in housing. Retro-reflective technology can be applied to paint as well as clothing.

"If we paint a wall, then we can see behind it," Mr Tachi said. "Even if there is no window in the room, we can see the scenery outside."

The technology may also be useful for pilots, to make the floors of their cockpits appear transparent for landing.

While the invention is still in its experimental stages, Mr Tachi and his team hope to develop a commercially viable system within a few years.

A luminous jacket helps create the amazing effect

That's basically what they use in Ghost In The Shell which Favreau says he's watching for Iron Man.

It's called THERMO-NUCLEAR CAMOFLAGE.

^ Well whatever it is it looks damn cool. In it's current state it doesn't work when looking with the naked eye...yet.

The TwinsWrote:
One easy question Mr. Favreau that's been bugging me a bit.

1) Will the film take place in New York like in the comics?

Jon Favreau:

No.

Note from AD: He already said it was filming in LA early on.
