Question about the Machinist???

Ok for those of you who have seen the machinist, the movie starring Christian Bale, do you know why the main character lost so much weight? Im talking about in the story and not why Bale lost weight for the role.

He had had insomnia for 1-2 years, I cant remember exactly.

Insomnia was the sympton and he couldn't eat either. I think in the movie he only had coffee and pie like once or twice he wouldn't eat anything else. It was due to his guilt.
