Sylvester Stallone Blames 'Batman' For Today's Action Hero Weaklings

Sylvester Stallone has blasted the lack of brawn in today's action heroes and blames 1989 movie Batman for allowing actors to wear latex muscles rather than work out in the gym. Stallone, who starred in a series of muscle bound action films during the 1980s, believes those films are things of the past because special effects can enhance you into a rippling hunk within minutes.

He says, "I think the evolution has been startling. I believe the culprit in the transformation of action films can be traced to Batman starring Michael Keaton. By that I mean, when an individual can step into a latex suit bulging with muscles and Velcro himself into an action star body we knew the times they were a-changing.

"It's tough enough to go to the gym and stay in good shape, but when you have the option to step into a Herculean Halloween costume; working out doesn't look like much fun. Damn you, Batman."

...Something tells me he didn't see Batman Begins. :o

Hes not targeting Batman Begins but the late '80s approach of casting physically undemanding actors for action movies.

I agree with Stallone on that and that trend may have started with Keaton on B'89 but I think here in the 21st century, moviegoers want, appreciate and even begininng to demand the hard work that actors do in the gym.

We are very lucky to have a dedicated actor like Bale as Batman.

Yeah, you can't complain about Bale's physique. That man puts in work.

Umm, why? He wasn't even talking about Batman Begins or Batman in general, just the 1989 movie.

Pfft, B89 proved you didn't need a big dumb accent or rediculously oversized bulging pectorials to be a convincing hero.

Stallone's bitter because he knows both Rocky VI and Rambo IV are both gonna blow.

Well, many don't think Keaton was convincing as far as his phyiscal appearance looked and Stallone is saying they cheat by giving him fake muscles on a character who is SUPPOSE to have real ones.

But Stallone is not bitter about Rocky because alll indication at this point is that its going to be a hit.

He just saying that there is a lack of appreciation of all the hard work actors put in at the Gym and I agree.

he makes a point.

costumes in this day an age can and do enhance physical physiques.

The last Stallone movie IMO that was decent was Cliffhanger. After that, he's slid into a vast decline.

I could care less about what other people think about Keaton. I for one think he was pretty damn convincing.

Rocky VI will surely gross a lot more but in the long run quality wise it will suck IMO.

As for the gym thing, who cares. Physique alone does not make you convincing in your part.

the lack of brawn in today's movies isn't due to any one movie, it's due to the audience getting tired of seeing shirtless, musclefreaks always being the star of the movie. not all heroes look like Stallone and Schwarzenegger.

I see where he is coming from with that comment. But, honestly, Batman (or Michael Keaton) is not to blame. The problem is that the type of movies that Stallone made in the `80s were really stupid. Sure...audiences loved it cause it was good "popcorn" stuff but they quickly out-grew it.

Yes, but he was also talking about how he thinks 1989's Batman has made it so people don't actually put in the work for today's action films. As the article said, he feels that action films now are simply filled with special effects work rather than actual dedication and discipline that he had when he did action films.

Bale is an example to contradict this, because he, among others, worked very hard to bulk up for the Batman role. So the genre of real action heroes isn't nessacarily dead, as the article is suggesting. (Moreso than Stallone, truth be told)

Quite honestly, I don't really disagree with Stallone in some respects. It's almost insulting when a guy can simply put on a suit and mimick those who have actually worked to get to their level of shape. (X-Men 3's Juggernaut is a prime example.) But I don't really believe there's a "lack of brawn in today's action heroes", as people like Bale have proved.

Normally I would agree with this, but in the case of Batman I don't agree at all. Batman is defined by his athletic ability and an actor MUST have this quality in order to be convincing.

This is where Bale got it right.

He said "physique alone." Physique is important, but it is NOT the most important part of the character.
