1. Doctor Octopus - Benefits from probably more screentime than any other villain. Sympathetic and warm at first, sinister and cold later on. He looks awesome in his multi-armed glory, and his battles with Spidey were unforgettable.
2. The New Goblin - The combination of Green Goblin and snowboarder look is lame. But Harry has a solid arc and has genuine pain driving his evil acts. It's a triumphant moment when he arrives to save Spidey at the building site.
3. The Sandman - A truly sympathetic character, from Hayden Church's heartfelt performance to the wonderful origin of the character (when was the last time a CGI sequence made you feel emotional?). Short-changed somewhat when many of his scenes were deleted from Spider-Man 3, but his ending - when Spidey forgives him - is a very brave and effecting one.
4. Venom - This one gets quite misunderstood. Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3 is a mirror image of Peter. Venom shows what Peter would have become if he didn't give up the symbiote. No, it's not a straight adaption of the comic, but it is a very effective use of the character to develop Peter himself further. Visually, I hoped Venom would be scarier and weirder, he looked more like a typical Hollywood monster than a nightmarish version of Spider-Man.
5. The Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) - Has genuine menace when he turns up to confront Spidey. Not a lot to judge him on so far, but he's got the obsession and the madness, as well as no plastic mask hiding his face.
6. The Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) - Wouldn't be out of place in a Schumacher Batman movie, with his one-liners and ridiculous costume. Dafoe plays it over the top as well.
7. Electro - Menacing and spectacular, but wouldn't be out of place in a Schumacher Batman film. He starts off as a comedy loser, and even as Electro spouts awful one-liners ("Time to light my candles!"). Just an excuse for CGI spectacle really.
8. The Lizard - A quite blatant clone of Willem Dafoe's Goblin, even down to mentoring Peter and hearing voices in his head. The character looks awful, and is more Hulk than Lizard. A real shame.
9. The Rhino - Not much to say yet, but it doesn't look promising. Giamatti plays a cartoony Russian thug, and the suit is more Transformers than Spider-Man.
