I have not followed this game at all but Ive seen its name pop up a bit. What exactly is it about. It already has one strike against it for me and that it looks like it takes place in the wild west, but Im sure theres more to it.

Thats exactly when it takes place. The "wild west", just as steam engines and more civilized towns are beginning to pop up. You don't like that there really is no point in you playing the game. The setting is kind of Rockstars big draw for this title.

Meh. Grand Theft Auto in the Old West days.

I'd rather have just a good Western game.

I bet one level you'll be having to shank somebody who took your horse.

Now GUN, that was a great game.

Hah, Gun was anything but great.

And Gun was pretty much GTA in the West, so i dont know what you have against this title.

Loved Gun, but I have to agree with ProjectPat on this one. Red Dead Redemption looks to be far superior than Gun.

Gun was an amazing Western game, and if you say it's anything but great(involving Western games only), then that is stupid to even say.

And Gun didn't feel anything like a GTA game to me, imo. But just the look of RDR, and it feels like GTA, but with just cowboy hats and pistols.

To each his own. By the look of the trailers, and my interest for this game has hit rock-bottom to me.

And hopefully you're not saying RDR looks superior because of the graphics, because sure, I would expect RDR to look better with its graphics, because there is a five year difference between the two and the looks of a game has changed drastically. But wait until Gun 2.

This is how I see Gun and Red Dead Redemption

Gun - John Wayne western game

Red Dead Redemption - Clint Eastwood spaghetti western

I choose spaghetti western.

I'm picky with my westerns. There have been western movies I've enjoyed, and I do like the setting overall. However I'm not a fan of John Wayne or Clint Eastwood type westerns. I wasn't exactly the type of child that grew up wanting to be a cowboy (tho I guess that was more my mom's generation that did that), but that's not to say I don't enjoy a good story regardless of it's settings. With the right narrative and actors/voice actors a cowboy movie/game can be very entertaining. It's just that I've never looked forward to a western game before, well other than Lethal Enforcers because I loved playing multiplayer Sega Genesis shooting fests with that at my friends house.

With this game, it's definitely an on the fence stance I'm taking. It's really not something I'm looking forward to and constantly checking on new things about it. However I do think it could be entertaining and worth a buy. I think it'll really just depend on if there's a time down the road where I have cash to burn, and have bought pretty much all of the other games I wanted. Wouldn't hurt if at that point it's at a reduced price.

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/red-dead-redemption/11275 Scroll down and watch the Features trailers, they show a lot of great gameplay and explain a fair amount about the game.
thanks. I watched some of those videos and Im actually interested in the game now. I didnt realize it was a GTA type game. I did a search and saw that the team made a previous game, Red Dead Revolver. Is Redemption a sequel to that? Was Revolver any good? Worth taking a look at?

Revolver was originally a Capcom game; when they cancelled it it was purchased by Rockstar who went on to finish and release it. I don't think Redemption is a direct sequel as much as a spiritual successor.

Revolver was pretty fun and definitely worth playing if you like western games. It's important to note that while Redemption is GTA-style sandbox, Revolver is not; it's more of a straight 3rd person shooter. It was the coolest western game I ever played until Gun came along.

And the end boss is a little ****er. :cmad:

Yup, it's GTAIV in the West with a lot of cool gameplay differences and improvements.

Revolver was not originally a Rockstar game, like Whiskey Tango said:

Red Dead Redemption's tale begins with the prequel, the 2004 game that Rockstar inherited when it began work with what was to become Rockstar San Diego. Known originally as Angel Studios, it was the studio's 1999 racer Midtown Madness that first brought it to Rockstar's attention – perhaps no surprise given that game's open-ended depiction of an urban space, a trait that was Rockstar's own calling card at the time.

"We agreed to use some of their expertise and our expertise and evolve it into Midnight Club whilst at the same time doing Smuggler's Run," says Dan, and the result was two games that managed to infuse the cultural sensibilities of Rockstar with Angel Studio's proven tech prowess. "We got on very well with the guys, it seemed to be a good cultural marriage in that we both brought different things to the table and we liked working with each other."

Soon enough the partnership was consummated, Angel Studios being bought up and renamed Rockstar San Diego. A handful of projects were still knocking around the studio, some worth salvaging and some less so, but of all the games being worked on, one shone brighter than all others. "The one that always caught our eye was this cowboy game that looked very good. For the time it looked visually spectacular, but also speaking to the management guys there it was a complete mess. It didn't really exist as a game."

That game was Red Dead Revolver, a project that had begun under the charge of Capcom but one that, as Houser admits, wasn't in the greatest of states. "Capcom were prepared to walk away from it, so we said we'd finish it and all they ever wanted was the rights to publish it in Japan if we ever did finish it - which they never thought it could be."

What was there was rough, but Red Dead Revolver's promise was immense – especially given the potentially explosive pairing of the Old West's traditional ties to the silver screen with a company that had specialised in channelling its love for cinema into compelling games. "Our focus was to get the thing done and get it out to a level that we thought that was worthy of coming out. We knew it wasn't going to be completely designed the way we would have done it if we were doing it from scratch, but that doesn't mean there weren't some good ideas there that couldn't be made into something that was fun and interesting in its own right.

The end result, pulled together in around 10 months, was only a mild success critically but it went on to sell well, and it's still held in kind regard. "It was an odd way of working and not one you'd normally do," admits Houser, "but it was good business to get it done, and it was good for the transition of the studio to become a Rockstar studio to get it done and it made sense at the time and we were pleased with the results. Is it what we'd do from day one? No, but were we pleased with where we got it? Absolutely, and I think it was a cool game."

So, it was an ok game, but very different then what Redemption promises to be.

Maybe that's why I'll end up preferring Gun over RDR.

I think Wayne > Eastwood.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/red-dead-redemption-has-surprising-multiplayer-to-be-revealed/

We just spent some time getting our filthy hands even filthier inside of Red Dead Redemption, where we actually skinned a horse and instantly felt like we'd killed Trigger. But no-good horse killin' aside, the big news here is that multiplayer is coming to Red Dead Redemption. We don't know how just yet, but a Rockstar representative told us that it would incorporate multiplayer in a "surprising" way. Surprising as in it doesn't totally suck like in GTA IV? Aw, snap. Yeah, we went there. Now we'll have to worry about being skinned.

More details are coming directly from the horse's mouth (sorry, couldn't resist) the week of April 5th, so stay tuned for more details when Rockstar reveals the secrets of what we like to call Red Dead Redemption: Posse Galore.

I hope there's going to be a freedom mode.

Spaghetti Western FTW :word:

Usually that refers to westerns like Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in the West. Typically more gritter and darker takes on the genre.

Spaghetti western is nothing more than a gory bloody western made by Italians

Or, yeah, that definition works just as well, I guess :/

Yeah, the "spaghetti" part comes from the fact the original westerns of that particular style were filmed by Italian directors in and around Italy. But now when someone says "spaghetti western" they're talking about a specific style as opposed to where it was filmed.

Dirty, gritty, violent, more realistic, etc... You guys covered it pretty well.
