Reintroducing Superman: An Open Discussion

I mean, let's say they decide to ditch DC right and go to..Marvel:

Does that mean that we as fans can't even read Kingdom Come or The Dark Knight Returns, unless there's a clause in the contract that says it's okay. I mean, Superman is everywhere in the DC Universe. (The Blackest Night, Final Crisis, New Krypton, etc)

so they still continue on with the Superman comics but now they have to pay the fee.

I mean, I just can't see the family just leaving because there's so much redtape to go through. I can, for sure, see Superman at Marvel, because it'll be the same deal: Pay up the family.

So what does that leave the family if they decide to drop DC and wB? Then Superman, as we know it, will be independently made? Or he'll fall into obscurity.
If Superman goes to MARVEL we'll be making threads about what colour his jeans and t-shirt should be.

Well, if WB doesn't have another Superman film out in 2012, I'm pretty sure Superman Returns will be the last Superman film for WB.

Do you know how big of a void they'd need to fill in if he does infact leave? Remember what happened after COIE when everyone was trying to figure out how to fit in Power Girl!? Imagine that but times a million, because like it or not Superman is essentially the DC universe. He's the glue to it all.

it would probably mean that DC couldn't reprint any Superman trades

There are a good number of comic books and graphic novels where Superman makes only cameos; like what I mentioned before Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns.. So DC is going to LOSE ALOT, along with the fans.

like what you all guys are saying, i hope that the family will do what's best for the character....

I can't imagine that WB/DC will not make a deal with Siegel's family. It's impossible.
For a new Superman movie, it could be part of the deal and I'm still optimistic: they are making Wolverin's sequel (which did less than SR at the b.o.), It's unreal that at WB they don't understand Superman's potential.

the family will do what is best for THEM and the character....in that order

man oh man.

It's been about money since the beginning. They didn't like the way Joe and Jer handled the situation (i.e. selling the rights of the character to DC and signing a contract.) and have since decided that even though the duo was making $75,000 in 1940 (a pretty amazing sum back then.) that they should own the piece of the Superman pie, and when I say that I mean they only care about the millions the Superman name is making.

The Family, atleast my opinion, is acting a bit like FOX Studios.

Oh I'm sure WB/DC will try to make a deal in 2013, but why would the families want a studio to keep the rights to the Superman franchise if they just sit on it? The Siegels want a studio to make films so they can get money, no movies made no money.

I doubt that the family has any reason to leave DC and take Superman to Marvel. Yeah, Marvel is more commercially successful, but...

a) The vast majority of Superman's supporting cast, rogues gallery, costume designs (including, I believe, his current one) and so much else is owned by DC.

b) They can't have him team-up as regularly as he does with fellow DC-ers.

c) They'd have to learn the power-structure of a much different company from the one they've been dealing with.

Now, I do have an inkling that DC will use Superman somewhat less after they get the rights back, but I'm sure they'll still publish his exploits regularly.

I really doubt DC and Superman are about to part ways other than the mere fact that he's technically owned by someone else.

Well, I'm not sure if you know this or are just assuming; but they're already making plenty of money off of Smallville and if the comics sold better (hint: they should be better) they'd still make money off of that. In fact, just to publish the comics would probably mean royalties for them.

As for the films, Warners never stopped trying to make a movie; but worst case scenario: someone else licenses it. Okay, well, Warners still has to lease their other characters, which means Warners would get royalties, so WB has a dog in the fight even if the character himself goes to the Siegels & Shusters and on the off chance that someone else produces it. This, of course, assumes that WB would still distribute it, but why wouldn't the Siegels want them to at least do that?

I don't know man, it's just my opinion/theory.

At Clark Kent's apartment, Kent walks in through the door. He puts his suitcase next to the door and walks into his bedroom. Looking into the mirror as he takes off his ring (it looks suspiciously like a Legion flight ring.) He takes off his suit and tie and grabs the phone. He calls his mother "Have you seen the news, ma?" "Yes Clark, I have.. I see you're still wearing that old tattered bunch of rags under your clothes." "It's not that tattered, in fact, barely a tear.." "I'd have thought it'd be worn by now.. Ever since you were a teenage you wore that." "Yeah.. I guess.. I guess what you and the others said. I have special powers.. I can't deny that." "Your father always knew one day you'd go out and showboat.." "I'm not show-boating, Ma. I was helping." "Seeing you lift a 40 ft metal donut into the sky doesn't sound like helping, son." Clark chuckles. "I guess you're going to keep this up then, aren't you?" "No.. I don't think I can. I mean, this was just a one time thing.." "That's what you said in Smallville Clark, next thing we know you're running around at the speed of sound every time you hear a little girl cry." "But Kansas was different, there wasn't all this noise. I've been blocking it out since I got to Metropolis. All I hear is cries for help, cries for someone to stand up and protect them." Clark walks into the living room and grabs his brief case, he opens it "Well, Clark.. You're special, you have great powers and we've raised you to be a good man, but you're not a savior.." Clark grabs a few papers most of which are photos from the Power plant accident. "I'm not fit for this world.." Clark drops the phone as heard the last saying, its a different voice not his mothers or his own "I can't live this lie anymore.." He looks out the window and leaps. We cut to a young woman standing on the roof of her slum apartment "This.. This I guess will be my way of saying good.." she leaps off her roof, "Hello, Ms." says Clark now in his Superman suit holding onto the young woman. "No matter what happened, it's not worth giving your life up for." says Clark. "It may seem bad now, but in time.. whatever it is will pass, and you'll be able to smile again." the young woman looks teary eyed at the Man of Tomorrow's face "Trust me on that." He flies her towards the skyline "Are you an Angel?" "No, Ma'm." "I'm just a man who's here to help you." He sets her down in the parking lot of Metropolis Hospital, "I'm going to let you off here. You can go inside and get help if you choose or you can turn around and walk away. I can only catch you, I can't choose which path you leap to." He flies away and we see her walk into the Hospital door.

I still keep re-reading that and imagine Superman doing exactly that.

I really wish this wasn't going on. This is a headache Superman doesn't need.

The Family, atleast my opinion, is acting a bit like FOX Studios.

The copyright laws changed, they saw it and took advantage. They're no worse than WB in the regard that neither cares about the character or us more than money he brings in. Not that I'm defending them, the thought that they could potentially destroy my childhood hero by removing him from the DC universe, makes me resent them all the same.

I wish there was some way to organize the fan base, and start a massive letter writing campaign letting the heirs know that if Superman leaves DC the fan community would boycott the product, and they'd think twice before screwing us over. But then, I also wish that there were really pots of gold at the end of rainbows, and that I'd find one and leprechauns would fill my pockets with it.

There's a very good chance he could stay in the comic universe. However the film rights might be another story. If Superman is licensed to another studio it means -no Superman in a Justice League movie, and that Superman villians like Brainiac, Doomsday, Bizzarro, Darkseid, Metallo, or maybe even Luthor would not be in his potential solo films. You'd think the potential lack of villians would be enough for the heirs to want to keep him at WB, but they seem to refuse to use those characters(except luthor) on the big screen anyway.

I'd write into the heirs.

Not necessarily. Say someone comes along with an idea for a Superman movie that's--for instance--inspired by the Fleisher cartoons. Bad example, but we'll use it.

The Siegels could include an exception whereby Warners has co-ownership or they allow them to use Superman in their Justice League films (perhaps the existing Superman Returns version or something). This other studio could also be a relatively small studio that's going to let Warners distribute it (as was the case with the Salkinds) and they and Warners would have a pleasant relationship whereby Warners would let them use Lex or Metallo or whatever while XYZ Productions lets them use--as permitted by the Siegels--to use Superman in a League movie.

Could be. It's entirely likely that

I would like to start a fund, to have in front of the WB's headquarters,a large \S/ logo written in the sky with the word "movie" and a question mark :D

" \S/ Movie ?! "
