Instead of a sequel to a flawed product, how about a restart?
Looking at how Marvel operates nowadays, this is far from a ridiculous proposal, even as recent as it is, just look at this Punisher restart, and Hulk restart, not even a decade after the originals came out.

If Marvel got their hands on it, and treated it with the care that seems to be going into the rehash of the Hulk, and of the Iron Man movie, fans of Ghost Rider could have something they'd be proud of, and not something that had to grow on them, and is hardly tolerable.

Or do you find the nature of the character, and it's marketability will have it on the backburner for a long time anyways?

The movie was popular, and made a bunch of money. You dont like it, go cry about it. Sequel is happening, restart is not.

VIVA LA RESTART. movie only made money cause most ppl dont have any good taste in movies. they go to see a movie thats come out cause EVERYone else is gunnah see it and they dont wanna be the one that hasnt seen it when their friends did.

First I want to say there is already a discussion about the restart aka reboot here:

http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=275183

2ndly, you bring up some big issues. First and foremost, the remakes that Marvel is doing. I can't see these as being a good idea in the long term. Too many different Hulks or Punishers (or even Ghost Riders) will just ruin their franchises in the long run. It shows unintentionally that Marvel is not sure how to market their own product and therefore it cheapens their characters (ala Batman Forever and Batman and Robin)

As for Ghost Rider, what I prefer, and what I believe should happen are two different things.

If there are going to do a sequel, it should be close to the original for sanity's sake...but I'd definitely prefer a reboot with a new director, and if necessary, a new studio who is willing to grasp the Dark-natured reality of Ghost Rider.

If there is going to be a remake it should be in enough years so people can expect a remake...so at least not in the next 5 years. Hell, I'd wait 10 years if it means nabbing a great director and an awesome screenplay.

What is it with fanboys, always acting like I implicated their mother in my judgement of the movie?

For all intents in purposes, the movie was originally popular, and did make good money.
Despite this, any movie orientated fanboard I frequented in it's aftermath all had a very unanimous contempt for the film, all along many of the same lines.

So even though hardcore enthusiast blinded by their love for the character saw past the cheapness of this movie, it still is, in my opinion, and apparently the majority of people's opinions, a bad movie.

So please, refrain from trying to insult me just because your attached to this ****** of a movie.

I've replied here regardless of their being an other discussion going on, not because I think mine is better, but I just didn't want to clutter the original with this sort of argument.

From how the movie did,and how people think of it..a restart is the best chance..some even think Ghost Rider is a dead franchise that no one wants to be connected to.

Well thats what sucks about these things, Ghost Rider was never as mainstream a title as some of the other Marvel franchises, and whereas the Punisher is on it's third go, I doubt GR will have the same luck.
MSJ seems to have killed chances for another DD movie, and if he's messed this up, I wish him something awful.

Ghost Rider will have to wait for a while until the price of CG falls a little more...or a better studio picks up the title.

I'd go for a restart as long as its an "R" rated Ghostrider.

Um....just make the sequel very different from the first. There's no reason to retread his origin.

I'd put Blaze out in the remote midwest and have the movie centre on a human character who isn't Ghost Rider. It involves biker gangs, hill billys, farm families and so on, basically a Preacher comic with with the demon Ghost Rider haunting around in the background. A proper American gothic horror movie western.

Heeeey, that sounds like.........ROAD TO DAMNATION! :woot:

Except I disagree about the one I bolded - your suggestion about having the film focus more on one of the "supporting casts". It should still revolve around the main character's point-of-view; a.k.a. Blaze/GR.

That was one of the things I despised about Garth Ennis's RTD mini-series: the whole thing treated GR more like a joke while having the story run entirely through the eyes of Malachi, Ruth, Kazann........and that 'tentacle freak' Hoss! :whatever:

They don't have to restart it. Just get rid of MJS, hire a better director, come up with a better sequel script, and there you go!

Sure you could produce an excellent sequel without the need of a restart, yet I personally feel that the movie that establishes the character should always be good a memorable.
That often isn't the case, but it be nice to have a franchise be good from start to finish for once.

I think a restart is inevitable at some point.

I was dissapointed with how Mephisto and Blackheart were portrayed but at the same time Sam Elliot was absolutely amazing. I'm on the fence with Nic Cage though.

I'd like to see a better film made that I feel would do more justice to the characters, but let's let them have a crack at trying a sequel first.

So let me get this straight just so i know where you pro-restarters are coming from.

You propose that Sony Columbia cancel their plans to make a sequel to a successful lucrative film which made good box office and which a wide range of people enjoyed. Which had a director who at least enjoyed the calssic comics. A leading actor who loves comics and who has name recognition. A love interest who is a talented up and coming actress. A secondary character/villain played by the legendary Peter Fonda. A film which based on script and director alone coerced Wes Bentley into playing the villain in it despite the fact he nearly flatly turns down any blockbuster work offered to him.

And then you want Sony Columbia to redo the origin again without those actors or the name star or the director who likes the comics. And you want them to redo ghost rider as an nc-17 rated movie thereby severly downsizing the potential audience.

Am i in the ball park here? That is what you expect sony to do?

I mean c`mon peter fonda is the DEVIL! Peter Fonda. The Devil. How can you get better than that man?

I hated Ghost Rider...no really...HATED IT

But, the movie was a massive hit. I don't understand it. I don't approve of it. But it was a money maker. In that respect, there is no reason to pretend the movie never happened and start over. The general public seemed to like it. The general public is who MUST approve of a movie in order for it to make money, not fanboys. The general public approved...they just didnt log onto comic book mesage boards to talk about it.

Just do a freakin sequel that is worth a darn...and recast as much as possible...and try not to remind me too much of the first film.

Did they really approve, or did they just mindlessly flocked too it because it was visually enticing, and had the benefit of being a Marvel production?

I've spoken too people about this movie, and I've heard others speak of it, on the net and elsewhere.
The only people I have found to have protested about it being good have been people on the fanboard here, otherwise all I've heard is how horrible a waste of time it was.

Of all the comic movies that have done well that I've spoken to about, Hulk included, people hate this one the most.

This goes to show that the numbers are not indicative of quality, but I'm no demographer. Given the underwheelming movie people spent money on and saw, I doubt as many would return to see the sequel.

But this project seems cold for the time being anyways.

Agreed.. I've heard nothing but negative remarks about it from everyone, except on here it seems like it's split.
