Just picked up the director's cut of Chronicles of well and I have a much better view of the film now. I still think it blew things up a little too much, but the Director's Cut everything makes a lot more sense now. It flows a lot better.

A lot of the CG doesn't hold up to today though. I get the sense from the commentary that a lot of visual FX shots weren't completely finished by the end.

The one thing I like better about the theatrical version is that it has a nice little epilogue that at least shows that New Mecca/Helion Prime wasn't destroyed. The director's cut ending is a little too abrupt.

How was the greenscreen. I think the worst shot was with that woman running, against the sunset in the trailers. Is it that bad in the final film too?

I was actually really surprised by how good those elements ended up being in the film. In fact things actually look worse when they move inside, but that's mostly because theres a moment when you can feel the budget drop out and they switch to a different set of cameras.

I plan on seeing this tonight at a local cinemark that only charges 6.75 for evening movies. Question will I totally be lost if I have never seen the previous Riddick movies?

Not really.

It works well as a stand alone but it also has some gaps if you've never seen the previous movies.

I liked it. It was what it said it was and had no pretense of being anything else which I think is why so many people who disliked it are disappointed. I wasn't expecting it to rise above some threshold of acceptability or dialogue. It's almost completely an action/surivval movie and it's brutal in that respect.

Looking for something more out of it will leave you waiting around.

This is more like Pitch Black and it shows and there is nothing wrong with that.

You should see Pitch Black. it'll just add to this film.

She really has a problem with Vin/Riddick... though that's not far off the predicted $20 million I saw for it's opening so unlike her whining over it, that's actually not bad.

For a $34-38 million movie, no that's not bad at all.

Yea..... I think people are tired of sequels and whatnot. I am sitting in the theater for the 9:10pm showing and there is only TWO other people in the theater with me right now. And this theater is one of the popular ones in my area. It was packed pretty much every weekend during the summer.. O well I hope I will enjoy this but I am sure this will be the last of the Riddick movies since its not doing so well at the box office.

We are in September this is typically dead zone period for movies.

I saw this movie today and thought it was okay, wasn't terrible, but wasn't great neither.
They borrowed heavily from first Pitch Black, with a few sayings and scenario's. I just wished they would of gave it a more grittier feel like the first one, this just didn't have that factor.
I think it needed more action/drama to it and though they kind of did an okay job with Riddick/Johns beef and blonde girl/head guy of other group(forgot their names). '
Biggest gripe was the CGI, the monsters were horrid, the dingo dogs were meh, and scenery was ehh( hover bikes sucked far as animation sequences). I'd almost rather they used the monsters from PB, than these not so thought out monsters.
However; with all that said I didn't have much hope going in so it was a decent movie, probably be better on blu ray.

Having not seen the preceding films, I have to say, I liked Riddick. It was an honest B-Movie: what would result if one threw 'The Most Dangerous Game Ever Played,' 'Aliens,' and the revenge Western in a blender. I liked the design of the film and thought Sackhoff and Diesel did well, on the performance front.

At least she can spell a two letter word like 'so'. :funny:

So, it looks like Riddick will be replacing Resident Evil as the premier cheesy SF-action franchise of September from now on?

Just got back from seeing it with about 16 people ( at first it was just me and two others in the theater) and I gotta say I was underwhelmed by it. I haven't seen the previous Riddick movies, and of they are like this, then I really don't care to watch them. The plot of this movie is almost nonexistent, and you really don't care about any of the characters as none have any character development at all.

The only thing I can say that I liked about this movie was that there were some cool kills and the alien designs were pretty interesting. Vin did a okay job acting wise, but some of the dialogue from the other characters was terrible. Also, some of the cgi looked like crap, particularly the hover bike scenes. And the ending was extremely weak! Honestly, I don't get the appeal of the character of Riddick, he is generic to me with the only distinctive feature is his ability to see in the dark. Wish I had listened to my gut and waited until this hit Redbox or HBO.

6/10

Watch Pitch Black at least. Then you'll understand the appeal

Riddick was downright scary in Pitch Black. As the franchise got more popular and money came in so did the grit and filth. As, I said they turned Riddick into Wolverine.

I enjoyed Riddick. I'm a sucker for grungy, futuristic films. And as an actual Riddick fan, it felt good to see him on the big screen again. With that said, I wish I would have caught the matinee.

Keep them coming, though. It's fantastic how effective a 40 million dollar budget is. Even though it's prequel was overly ambitious, it still happened at the end of the day. Let's see Riddick return to Furya.

Yeah the article was overly negative and mean-spirited.

But I mean she blatantly I believe lied and made up things that aren't true. It reads like she has an axe to grind against Diesel.

Damn, really wanted to like this flick more then I did. Love the first two and the character.

The first act of the film with Riddick and his dog were awesome. Loved everything there and was with it 100%. But when the bounty hunters come in and Riddick is barely in it, it dragged big time. Was really disappointed and bored. Only awesome thing during that part of the flick was Sackhoff sideboob.

The flick didn't really grab me back [BLACKOUT]till they killed his dog[/BLACKOUT]. Thought the last act was fair, pretty anti climatic imo. Vin Diesel put out a solid perfromance but when he's not on screen it really suffers from his lack of presence. Really wish the bounty hunter stuff was better cause it killed the flick for me.

Always down for more flicks cause he's a great character, just hope they stick with him through the whole film next time. Or write some more interesting supporting characters.

6/10 for me.
