*Sigh* I am as much a feminist as any straight man can be, but is it really impossible to have strong female characters without them "kicking ass" and swinging swords along with the boys? It is a historical nonsense.

I agree. That's kind of annoying.

Maybe she's trying to disguise herself or something. Probably wishful thinking.

I hope this is the case and Robin's just trying to smuggle her somewhere dressed as a man.

That was one of the main reasons why I wasn't interested in that King Arthur film that came out a few years ago. They fricken had Keira Knightley playing Guinevere looking like some damn amazonian warrioress. Looked pretty hot but still made me scream horse ****!

Marian has many times been known as a skilled fighter and to have dressed as a boy...I dont know why this is so suprising.

I think it has to be done without making it too contrived.

For example, Marian dressed up as a warrior in Robin Hood: Prince of Theives. Watching it now, that scene was so..early 90s. It felt forced upon.

ha...don't give Tony Montana's little sister a sword. As for marion fighting, I have no issue with it. Cate Blanchett used a sword on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ;)

And? Crystal Skull was a poor fantasy film, this is supposed to be fantasy only in that the narrative is invented. Medieval warrior women belong to the same strain of fantasy as wizards, dwarves and elves, generally speaking. The few exceptions from history (Aethelflaed, Joan of Arc) are debateable and rare.

So, why is Marion a proficient fighter? Why is she sufficiently strong and powerful to wield a long sword and manouvre in chain mail? Why does she have this power without the requisite muscle and sinew? How did she manage to avoid the life of a medieval lady, in order to devote the time to training and fighting, without anyone noticing?

It's silly. There were some very influencial and domineering women in medieval history (Emma of Normandy, Eleanor of Aquatine, the Empress Matilda, Isabella of France), but they didn't make themselves so by dressing up in armour and stumbling around a battlefield.

Which scene does she dress like a warrior? I don't remember that at all.

Edit: I just remembered it.

Costner goes to her castle the first time and she fights him disguised as a warrior in black armor.

Woops missed the edit...lol

Yeah, I actually don't mind that scene too much. You sort of wonder why she's suited up like that to begin with. It's not like you can just throw that stuff on when someone comes to the door lol... But it's an interesting way to introduce the character.

You have to love how characters in movies either forget or remember characters they haven't seen in years just so it better fits the plot. Case in point:

Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves, Robin shows up at Maid Marian's castle and even though she's known him for years, his appearance has changed SO much over the years that she attacks him and tries to kill him.

Braveheart - Wallace leaves Scottland as a boy and comes back when he's in his 30's or 40's and somehow immediately recognizes the girl who gave him a flower at his father's grave.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Edmond meets Fernand, who was once his best friend, 10-15 years after being sent away to prison. Even though Edmond looks exactly the same (other than a goatee) Fernand shows NO recognition. None.

Maybe it's such an awesome goatee that it's all you stare at.

MAN..THAT's late casting.
Yes it is pretty late. Cant they cast any English actors in this movie???

It always makes me laugh that the people who made RH:Prince of Thieves did their homework when casting Richard The Lionheart when they cast an oldish Sean Connery because the real Richard died aound the age of 35..:woot:

Hate too tell ya but women of proper royal up bringing where schooled in many things. So its not a surprise too me the using of a sword or archery was not something she was taught.

No they weren't. They were taught linguistics and courtly etiquette, and that was about it. The rest is just spurious nonsense, which is probably why you "hate" to tell it to me.

Watch the Constant Gardner. Houston can do a damn good english accent.

Any book about medieval social history? Start with this since it covers the period in question.

But how is his French? Because if they really want to be historically accurate, Richard actually spoke very little English.

I can only imagine the audience's confusion if Richard the Lionheart were to speak with a French accent. :hehe:
