RoboCop is a classic, and one of the best science fiction films to come out of the 80's. However, Robocop 2 (which completely destroys every essence of the first film, and basically retcons everything about the first except for the fact that Murphy is in the suit), RoboCop 3 (one of the worst sequels in cinema history), the TV series, the two cartoon shows, and the (god-awful) Prime Directives destroyed the RoboCop franchise. However, the remake will NEED to stand on it's own in today's times, because, believe it or not, RoboCop was such an 80's film.
I say go ahead and remake it. I'm not complaining, because even though I loved the first, I wouldn't mind seeing Murphy again. Regardless of what I think of the film, the right and just thing to do is wait for a teaser (at least), then judge. Just like the upcoming Highlander remake, this RoboCop remake will usher in fans, new and old. Today's audience and those who never saw or heard of RoboCop will get their chance, for better or for worse.
And guys, is it really necessary to have Murphy's death scene in the remake? I mean, if there is a Clarence Boddicker in this, there are other alternative to show just how sadistic he can be, even if it ends up being (more than likely) PG-13. It wasn't the gore that made the first film so great.
...that's just me.
