RoboCop Returns?

And guys, is it really necessary to have Murphy's death scene in the remake? I mean, if there is a Clarence Boddicker in this, there are other alternative to show just how sadistic he can be, even if it ends up being (more than likely) PG-13. It wasn't the gore that made the first film so great.

...that's just me.

I don't want Clarence again. I want all new villains & an all new plot besides Robo's origin.

Then Marvel can sue for ripping off Cyclops. (The helmet & lasers that is)

Okay, I was at the Licensing Show today, and I made sure to ask the MGM guy about RoboCop. He said it is 100% going to be rated R, and "It's going to blow everyone away. They've offered it to some really great directors. I can't say who, but wow."

That's excellent. I really appreciate you asking, Compi.

So, seeing as this is going to happen, here's my idea for it. It's a sequel. Not a directly linked sequel, but in the same continuity. Robocop is outdated, and has been destroyed. Crime in Detroit is worse than ever, so they make a new cop who's killed in the line of duty into the new Robocop. He'll have the same problems that the original did, but modernized. So while the old Robocop was big and clunky, the new one will be sleek, but have more modern technical glitches. His system may freeze, if he's not in range of the towers that send him his orders he might black out, etc. Give him the problems of modern technology in the same way the original had the problems of 80's technology.

I could definately go for that as opposed to an out-and-out remake.

Nods and references to Murphy would be interesting.

This would be hilarious if the whole movie was about the problems he was having. If for the whole movie, here was this new, expensive Robocop and he just won't work, and every other cop on the force is trying to get him to work, arguing with each other, and pretty much going ape ****. Meanwhile the crime just continues to escalate.

That was pretty much the joke about ED-209 in the original though; that they just couldnt get it to work properly.

I'm not to sure that it should be Robo's deal for a whole movie.

The first one is a classic, I hope they'll get a director who has the guts to make a provokative, pulpy and interesting Robocop, without toning down the characters like the sequels did.

I'm all for a sequel, ROBOCOP RETURNS or something like that, but a remake? We'll see.

Reboot is such a 10 dollar word for remake. lets not sugar coat what is going on here. someone is copying someone else's hard work, putting their name on it and somehow getting away with it. Its high paid accepted sloth and mental atrophy.

Yeah, I don't want a new Clarence either. I'd hope more for a "reimagining" remake than a direct remake, as well.

Not necessarily when it comes down to franchise characters that exist and have existed prior to their films. That's a completely different ballpark than original, on-screen characters such as Indiana Jones or John McClane. Batman Begins, for example is not a remake of Batman. Other than having the same character, and being movie #1 of a franchise, there aren't enough similarities for the former to be considered a remake of the latter. When it comes down to plot, both were polar opposites, and existed in completely different types of atmospheres, had different themes, etc.

The same thing can happen to this new RoboCop film. Granted, it's up in the air whether this will be a direct remake (similarities in or almost carbon copies of plot, characters, themes, etc), "reimagining" type of remake (ala Rob Zombie's Halloween), or the "reboot." If this new movie ends up being a reboot, it is not copying someone's hard work, because the plot will be different, there will be tweaks with the character achetypes, etc. Now, granted, if this film decides to portray Murphy's humanity (which makes RoboCop such a unique character in the original), then it still won't be a carbon copy because that is apart of the mythos of the character. It won't be a copy or "stolen" unless everything basically stayed the same with a few tweaks. Of course, nothing could ever be "stolen" anyway, because the studio owns the rights and they can do what they damn well please with it.

but should they?
really? remake a movie that was fine to begin with.
Halloween is really not a good example if you are trying to justify remakes/reimagine. Any movie with a cult following like that where it has reached classic status should be left alone in my opinion.

I just don't see a good reason to remake or reimagine or reboot RoboCop. It's never going to touch the original in any real way. It will have better special effects and slicker production values but the acting has no chance of being as good and goodluck getting one of these new fangled pampered pretty boys/weepy looking actors to play Murphy.

Outside of The Thing I don't really care for John Carpenters movies but that Rob Zombie remake of holloween was a disaster. Now irronically as evident by "The Thing" remakes aren't all bad but Robocop isn't some cheesy old 50's horror movie, it's a witty social commentary with lots of action and violence thats just as relevent today as it was in the 80's, if not more relevent.

They are going to remake it and it might not be as Rob Zombies disaster but it's not going to be as good so why? Well they are a business, so I guess that is the only reason.

Goodluck not being a laughing stock after a big opening weekend.

Oh well, I have my DVD of the real thing.

Robocop 2 and 3, the cartoon series, those STV movies, bad acting in all of those, bad special FX and yet behind it all they had good ideas.

If they can reDo good ideas that were executed horribly in those and (ill take crap) to a certain degree in the 1st Robocop... they can make a damn fine picture. Frankly by big complaint (and really only complaint) with Robo1 is the fact that Murphy can barely move.

Some action hero. Love the design, idea behind it all but it needs to be done well...

Hopefully we get some solid and good news in the coming months on writers, director, and casting for the film. Hopefully things turn out good and this reboot/remake is a good film. Also hopefully that news from the licesing event stays true and the studio will stick with the Hard "R" rating robocop should stay.

eh, I thought the first film was decent.

I find it sad that studios will make this rated R but the new Terminator PG-13.
