RoboCop Returns?

I wouldn't mind a sprint option that quickly depletes his supplies so he doesn't use it all the time.

they can also speed him up a tad.

the could also make him generallly more flexible.

so....you say that the point of Robocop was to satire b-flicks, but you can't agree with me when i say that if i never saw the Robofilms until now that i would've thought they were b-movies?

ummm...wow, brain fart...

i was disagreeing with the they are outdated part that needs retooling.

oh okay...gotcha. well, if it was indeed meant to be a satire of b-flicks then it did it's job well and needs no retooling. however, that $#!+ wouldn't fly a year from now. i think the IDEA of a robotic cop needs to be updated if it's going to connect with today's movie goers.

What about making him be able to jump higher and move faster... I mean no one wants to see a big clunky robot like in '87... It's true enough that Transformers and Iron Man have shown that mechanistic style suits and robots can move fast and be lethal... This is not to say rely on purely CG but I'd rather not see him moving so clunkily and slowly and have some kick ass arsenal of weapons

like say for example a small pellet explosive gun that comes from his forearm... small pea sized pellets are fired out but pack massive explosive charges... I'd love to see him tear up a street of criminals decimating them using that sort of weapon with the kick ass Robocop theme blaring in the background...

Nice article, i wonder if he has any interest in playing robocop or having a role in the film?

what would be the updated version of the themes in the original film

I've no idea - Basil Poledouris's Robocop theme was awesome.

Robocop II's theme couldnt hold a candle to it; it's a mis-step than can easily be made.

Darren Aronofsky on Robocop, Nicolas Cage, Vince McMahon, Dave Chappelle and THAT Scene in Requiem

Posted on Thursday, December 18th, 2008 at 4:31 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Darren Aronofsky appeared on the Howard Stern show today, and was again downplaying the upcoming Robocop reboot/remake, which he is attached to develop and direct for MGM. When asked if he was directing the next Robocop movie, Aronofsky replied “Oh, I don’t know. We’ll See. We’re working on a screenplay. So we’re developing it but we don’t have a screenplay yet. We’re working hard on it.”

The filmmaker was also making some strange/vague comments about the project at The Wrestler junket last week. Other blogs have already begun to speculate that Darren is either off the project, or it just isn’t going to happen anymore. It’s a little to early to jump to conclusions. Darren is a n extremely sly guy, and I’m convinced that this just might be his way of redirecting the questions back to his current project.

Aside from that, Aronofsky revealed a bunch of interesting tidbits during the interview:

The Budget for The Wrestler was about $7 million, but the budget was a whopping $19 million when Nicolas Cage was attached to star. We’ve talked a little bit about this in our Toronto interview with Aronofsky, but he does say that “two days after we won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival [Nicolas Cage] sent a text saying that ‘The Ram was always Mickey, congratulations.’ He is real class.” … “I thought Nic could have done it, but I had worked so long working with Mickey that it was just the Ram in my head was Mickey.”

Tomorrow, Darren is making the journey to Stamford Connecticut to show The Wrestler to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. I don’t think they would be making such a reach-out if the Fox Searchlight/WWE weren’t interested in doing some kind of promotion for the film.

On Jennifer Connelly’s double penetration (/Film commenters have corrected me, it’s actually “ass-to-ass”) scene in Requiem for a Dream: “That was a tough night. It was a full night of shooting, and after my DP turned to me and said ‘Darren, thats the most ****ed up thing we’ve ever done.’” … “I was just very strait up. It’s based on a novel by Hubert Shely Jr. It’s a very very hardcore novel. One the day of, she started to get very nervous. And I said to her, ‘Look, this film is exactly what the book is. It’s about going as dark and as far as you can go. And if we don’t go that far, we’re undermining the book and the whole point of doing the movie.”

Dave Chappelle was Aronofsky’s first choice for the role of Tyrone in Requiem for a Dream: “I always wanted a comedian for that role because when I read it in the book I thought the guy had a lot of humor. I actually went to Chappelle first and I begged Chappelle to do it.” I’m glad that Marlon Wayans got the part, because I just can’t imagine what Requiem for a Dream would have been like with Chappelle.

there would definitely have to be some adjustments made to Robocop in order for him to fit in contemporary time. Looking at the previous films, he is way too clunky and slow moving. I would imagine making him more streamline to be able to handle any drastic measure in the area of law enforcement.

The first one was so good; b-movie magic.

Let it be, I say.

"I'll buy that for a dollar!"

yeah the music in part II blew, i was SO glad when they brought Basil back for 3, it made the movie go from meh to cool :hehe:.

Figured I'd bump this. After seeing Robo last night, and The Wrestler I am super stoked for it. I am just excited to see Darren's first foray into the "Blockbuster" world, as Nolan did.

The first was such a classic, and I think this complete re-imagining will be excellent as well.

I don't want to see another sequel, because every attempted follow up to the original blew. Part 2 came close, but still lacked some stuff (My main problem was introducing a subplot where he's watching his wife, then dropping it)

I don't want to really see a reboot either, because it'd be hard to top the original. I don't want a lame rip off, just because technology has improved.

So I was originally disappointed when I first heard of this.

But a re-imagining that has barely anything to do with the original? Oddly enough, now I'm interested.

YEa i cant wait to see how this turns out remake/sequel(same characters/new characters).

Even though I don't agree with all of that post. It is interesting now that Darren really wants to take it in a different direction. Reading on Robocop boards though, man they think thats the most horrible idea ever. I think its brilliant.

If "taking it in another direction" translates to completely ignoring the political satire then I agree.

Nothing can come close to what they were able to do with the film in the eighties, no reason to try it again with our time.

Harry at AICN has a short little blurb on Darren's ROBOCOP. Not sure what it means. It sounds like he's afraid Aronofsky will be doing something akin to a satire with the film.

That or he's just bored.

Its worked with Batman Begins/The Dark Knight and Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace. Can't wait.

Is Arofonsky still on this? I heard he was off it. Either way, i'm still not sure its a good idea.

The latter, I think. I do agree that it would be interesting to see a purely straight-faced sci-fi approach to Robocop. However, that is my approach to everything: burn out all the humour and leave only drama. It's a good thing the entertainment universe doesn't always conform to this.

The first Robocop was serious and dark to an extent, but a great deal was very tongue-in-cheek and comedic and I think they're one of the aspects of the movie that hasn't aged very well.

With that, I'm totally fine with an update and I'm sure it'll do well, particularly with Aronofsky behind it.
