Roland Emmerich's 2012

The movie was what I expected it to be. Tons of explosions and terrific visual spectacles with lots of humor. The crowd was definitely involved in this one, it seemed like way too many close shaves but its what I expect from a Roland Emmerich movie. Solid movie, 7 out of 10.

I'm shocked to find out that this film got an 8/10 in my newspaper. And my critic sucks.

Ebert enjoyed it. He usually digs spectacle though, along with indie psychoanalytic pathos studies.

So usually he dislikes crappy movies?

No, he's just a little harsh when it comes to movies. He gave Where the Wild Things Are a 4/10 because it didn't feel child friendly. I haven't seen the film but I applaud it for takin a risk and being more adult, which if you think about it, it is in a way. The book is.

I would say that the special effects in this movie are some of the best I've ever seen. Also the movie is kind of long. I went to a 5:15 showing and didn't leave the theater until 8:00. Not the best movie ever, but worth a matinee. 7/10

Emmerich needs to do something else. Like a much smaller film. I liked how he did The Patriot which was really great, but he went back into disaster films. I liked The Day After Tomorrow some, but he's overdoing it now. I mean what is he gonna do next? He pretty much has worn out all the possible ends to the world. Aliens, a giant Lizard, global warming, this.

He'll destroy the galaxy next....

Probably. Or worse, do two other ID4 films. Oh, wait...

They might destory the galaxy in ID4 2...then they will build ark ships and find a new Earth.... kind of like the plot of this movie...lol

Someone please put the ending in spoilers . I might see this but it depends on how it ends.

I like Emmerich a whole lot. Been his fan since Universal Soldier, and I also like catastrphic movies, and those two often go in pair. Well, I thought it was pretty entertaining. Cant say its good objectively, cause its kinda cheesy from a story point of view (too much suspension of disbelief, too many "just in time" scenes, too much Rambo-cheese: when everything hitting everything but miracously not the main characters, scene after scene), but it sure was fun.

I just think the special effects ruined the movie. They were waay over the top. I think thats the danger with CG, to overuse it and create game cutscenes instead of just reinforcing somehting to seem more real. But the angles and the damage shown was over the top, and while the animation was nicely done, no matter how photorealistic they can draw something, it still has to be presented in a believable way. I mean, a car driving in the middle of giant exploding meteors falling, earth crumbling, lava shooting, volcanos erupting, skyscrapers falling...when's too much? (not to mention nothing's hitting them, not a piece of rock). And the wide angles showing entire city collapsing - the angles and the overdone damage ruins it imo.I think it was seriously overdone. The Day After Tomorrow did it better

Anyway, great entertainment, nothing jaw dropping but a solid fun movie. Something I expected from Mr Emmerich

After reading AICN's review, I dunno if I want to pay £8 to see this. Almost three hours of OTT FX (Not too bad) and hammy characters stuff (the IMPORTANT stuff)? Hmm. Heard about the chicken rescue thing too.

You should ask yourself if the movies you like also have gotten positive reviews from the AICN guys you trust.
In fact that applies to every film review you read at different sites. There will always be those you read frequently because it's those critics opinion who you respect the most.
And i don't mean a guy who's given positive reviews to something like 50 % of the movies you liked. I'm talking about a percantage of around 80-90 %.

Personally i've always trusted the opinion of Drew McWeeny who previously was posting at AICN using the name Moriarty.
I'd say that almost 95 % of the movies i like/love , have gotten positive reviews from him.

AICN hates almost everything...Drew is now working for a site called Hitfix, i trust his reviews i just don't like how he tries to inject what his kid thinks into every review

Parenthood can definately change you're way of thinking.
While i ain't a parent ,living with my brother and his wife along with their (now) 11 month old baby has also changed my view as well. Kiddie stuff suddenly seems interesting.

I understand Drew's point of view because he can see what kids like and what they don't like. However i do agree that sometimes he goes too far and IMO if he doesn't watch it , he'll become just like Harry Knowles who just always needs to "feel" a movie in order to like it. With harry you really get the impression that unless he gets a hard-on with certan movies , he just won't give it a good review.

Hm, I don't normally go by the critics, I aggregate the opinions of fans normally. Feedback on 2012 is pretty bad. AICN usually just trolls everything.

Saw this last night with my gf and parents and it wasn't as dumb as I thought it was going to be. It had typical comedy relievement and situations that you expect from these kinds of films but I still had somewhat of a fun time.

I enjoyed how much it focused on the government/world leaders as opposed to mainly showing the target family which can bring on too much sappyness at times.

I don't get why people are complaining about the CGI. I also don't like it when people overuse CGI in films that don't need it but this film did. They wouldn't have been able to show the destruction on that grand of a scale without it. Normally I wouldn't say this about most films(let alone want to) but the CGI and destruction was the best part of this movie.

All in all I liked it better than The Day After Tomorrow and it's maybe tied with Independence Day(haven't seen 10,000 BC and don't ever plan to). Only thing that really had me and my Dad getting irritated was the typical last 15 minutes or so. I hate it when they have to add another cliffhanger on top of another which is on top of another. It just gets too ridiculous and always pisses me off. Mainly because you for the most part know how it's going to end but they still have to milk it trying to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. It just drags in my opinion and loses points with me.
Did they really have to do the typical, "something's jamming the blah blah blah", "We need to remove it or we're all going to die!". Not just that but then milk it even more with trying to keep the audience in suspense if John Cusack died or not. BS, he was right behind his son, no reason for them to have waited so long for him to swim out.

I think I'll give this film a 2/2.5-5
