February 19: Leigh Whannell talks SAW IV director, SILENCE

Fango got the scoop from SAW series scripter Leigh Whannell (pictured) that despite early reports of franchise production designer David Hackl taking the directorial reins on the soon-to-roll SAW IV, a familiar face will instead be back at the helm. “Darren Lynn Bousman is coming back [from SAW II and III], he’s going to direct,” Whannell tells us, adding that although he’s not writing the screenplay this time, “James [Wan] and I, as executive producers, are still treating it like our baby; we’ll still oversee it. I’ve definitely been privy to the ideas they’ve had and the scripts they’ve been writing, and it’s coming along well. I’m actually excited."

Great news. Hopefully Cary or Donnie will be back for the fourth Saw film. But with Cary it's a lot less likely since he's suing LGF.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that they're going to bring back Dr. Gordon. If he was truly dead I believe they would've shown his corpse already.

Much like they showed what happened with Adam, I don't believe they would've gone three films and still not show what happened to him. So either they're going to show him dead in the fourth or alive in the fourth, along with Detective Matthew possibly returning to help Jeff.

With shooting only a week away, the cast list for Lionsgate's Saw IV is growing extremely quick. This morning it was revealed that Lyriq Bent - who played Rigg in Saw III - is returning to action, while we broke the news last week that Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) is starring. Tobin Bell is signed on for six Saw films, so we know he'll be back, but who's next?! How much blood are you willing to shed to find out? Bloody-Disgusting has learned this afternoon that Justin Louis has joined the cast of SAW IV. Louis is best known to us genre fans as Luis, Sarah Polley's husband, in the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. He can also be seen in SHOOTER, which is now in theaters. Check out his IMDB listing for his massive credit list.

When we checked in with Bousman to confirm this scoop (which he did), he tells us "I am so stoked - one reason I love this franchise is most everyone has come back on the crew. Same Costume team - same props team - same production designer - DP - AD's - basically everyone... At this point it's like one big dysfunctional family... That holds true with the cast. We have some crazy surprises in store for the fans this year. Stuff no one is expecting."

With a script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (the crazy dudes behind FEAST), I'm sure plenty of craziness is in store when SAW IV hits theaters October 26. Watch for more news as it comes in.

Shawnee returning after all?

I have a very interesting scenario here... one that feels like deja vu. If you remember last year (around the same time), we announced that Donnie Wahlberg would be returning in Saw III. We were blasted by pretty much every website as everyone involved in the film said "No, he's not!" Well, if you recall, he was in fact in the film... and now things have come full circle. Director Darren Lynn Bousman, along with Shawnee Smith herself, have denied rumors to us that she will return as Amanda Young in Lionsgate's Saw IV ... although other extremely credible sources tell us otherwise. We're sticking to our guns here, we think you'll be seeing Amanda Young return in Jigsaw's next on October 26. The screenplay was written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Feast).
