Scorsese's The Irishman

Netflix does occasionally like for Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House. I’m sure if there’s enough fan outcry, they will.

Maybe. They didn't for Roma from what I can tell and a lot of their other big movies.

But is love to be wrong

Martin Scorsese Doesn't Think Marvel Movies Are Cinema
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

They are very 'safe' cinema. MCU films follow the same formula. It's like cinematic fast food.

Scorsese thinks exactly what I’d expect him to think lol.

Has he been crucified by the horde of hardcore MCU fanboys yet? :o

I don't exactly agree with him on this (though I get where he's coming from), but you just know he's gonna get so much crap for this.

Not towards a human being but it’s still as or even more impressive when you have to emote towards a talking raccoon which isn’t even there to begin with.

“Not cinema”

Eh, I like many of the Marvel flicks. Still, I get where he’s coming from. The films are safe and for a guy who has dedicated his life to bringing challenging ideas and characters to life on the big screen, no one should be surprised that he has trouble viewing those movies on an even scale.

I think his opinion extends beyond just the MCU, but that’s the most visible example.

He's entitled to his opinion but it doesn't make him right or wrong. What it does do is have more people talking about him talking about Marvel than people talking about his own film.

Cinema is an expansive term to categorize motion pictures and every film Marty has made doesn't and will never undercut the validity and legitimacy of what Marvel Studios have done. The fact that Marvel Studios is the only company in Hollywood history to have made a film with a predominantly black cast with a budget of over $100M, that became a global cultural event, critically acclaimed, made over a $Billion, the highest grossing solo superhero film of all time, the highest domestic grossing film of 2018, won 3 Oscars and the only comic book film nominated for best picture dunks on Marty's short sighted claims.

At the end of the day, Marvel is king and a legit one at that otherwise people wouldn't be coming for them so hard. Marty, Spielberg, Cameron even Sam Mendes back in August came out attacking Marvel and Ryan Coogler for following up Creed with a Marvel movie and went on about these films having crap 3rd acts where there's only action at the end...um did this clown forget he made Skyfall and the disaster that was Spectre where they did the same thing? In any case, Marvel need to keep at it and continue dominating like they've been doing. In Feige we trust.

While I can agree that Marvel-movies are kind of like theme parks it feels odd attacking Marvel specifically. Pretty much everything in Hollywood that's designed to be a blockbuster has been following more or less the same formula since Star Wars in 1977.

i think they asked him about marvel movies. Like asked Cameron and Spielberg.

They are the Billie Eilish of the movie world. It's sad I know what that means.

Ignoring this topic entirely, I wish there was a theater near me playing this movie in the theater. I really want to see this in a theater

If Marvel movies aren't cinema, why is he copying our James Gunn by putting licensed music in scenes? Gotcha.

Why is he following in the footsteps of Endgame and making movies three hours long? Owned, Boomer.

As it relates to the big screen, I would gladly take more Irishmans and less superhero stuff at this stage. I love my picture books, but I can only watch the city explode so many times.

Breaking news: Martin Scorsese signs to direct Joker sequel.

Fanboys/girls heads explode.

I don't necessarily disagree with Scorsese about the MCU films, but I still enjoy them. Not every movie made has to be like The Godfather, Taxi Driver or Citizen Kane.

Though I think it's ironic considering he agreed to do a voice in Shark Tale.

Clearly Scorsese has a certain personal definition of cinema in his mind that has more to do with personal expression than it does studio-schematicized franchise product.

He says they are well-made and well-performed for what they are and I totally get where he's coming from. They don't exactly fit my own personal definition of "cinema," either. But clearly they ARE movies and very financially successful ones that a lot of people really enjoy. I think they are fine and it seems like Scorsese does, too, but they don't speak to him the way "cinema" speaks to him.
