Scorsese's The Irishman

I really hate that the discussion and headlines about Scorsese's comments about Marvel continue and are still rarely about what the hell he actually said.

Scorsese never said the Marvel films aren't real movies or aren't cinema. That's stopping his sentence halfway through. He said they aren't the cinema of human emotions. They are the cinema of something else though. I'm not sure I even agree with what he said there specifically but his point was that their main focus and thrust was just something he wasn't as interested in. It's actually a super tepid statement but there's been 40 articles a day about it. Tiresome as hell.

That's the stupidity of the people with the internet. Contextless arguments that turn into tribalism.

The Chicago international film festival is screening this on 10/24. I may try and get in.

94 on Metacritic after LFF screening with 30 reviews. Woah.

Saw the premiere last night. It's a good movie overall which moves at a decent pace so you're never bored for too long. I did feel however that it coulda been easily trimmed by 45 minutes. I would say Goodfellas is still the superior gangster movie and this is more middling Scorsese albiet a solid 7.5/10. Al Pacino and De Niro are standouts, I think they could be getting nominations. The last hour of The Irishman is where the story really picks up and knows where its heading. The first half of the movie is a little aimless but there are many characters to introduce and flasbacks to visit each ones origin.

I would say this is not the movie to be promoting while saying marvel films are not cinema. I know he says there amusement park type films but yet the irishman wont be in theaters long. I know a Lot of people who still think or feel that netflix movies are still tv movie level quality, just bigger production value.

Take for example if the joker had debuted on netflix and I saw it on my tv during the day with distractions as opposed to seeing it at the theater with a crowd is just entirely different.
Exactly, people say theatres have distraction but is it really any more than what you have at the house?

He's now doubled down on his comments... John Campea, who defended his first comments or ability to say that, turned heel on him fast on his show today. He's still at it actually.

Scorsese's quotes.

"Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks," he continued. "It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

"Where do people go to get films financed now? They're not bankrolled by a Hollywood studio or the big studios here. And then, when you get it made, where are they going to be shown, when the theatres are all taken over by the 'theme park' films?"

"That's all fine and good, but don't invade everything else. Knowing some of what goes into them now, I admire what they do. It's not my kind of thing. It simply is not. And it's creating another kind of audience that thinks cinema is that."

"It's not cinema, it's something else, we shouldn't be invaded by it, so that is a big issue and we need the theatre owners to step up to allow theatres to show films that are narrative films."

My response aligns with John Campea.

I respect the man (and i really enjoyed RDJ's take on the subject on Howard Stern's show even though i dont like RDJ one bit).

But Scorsese is making a clown of himself. He is just jelly and mad that Superhero films are the #1 genre at the moment whether people like it or not.

His idea that they are invading cinemas is completely out of touch with reality.

Comic book films in general are 2-9% of the total movies played each year.

People just wont go to the cinema to watch what Scorsese thinks is "real cinema".

Its a sad situation. One of the Hollywood's greats makes some stupid and ignorant comments out of emotional distress.

He is saying MCU movies are driven by spectacle rather than character study. Movies like Logan and Joker are character focused (like Martys movies); the likes of Endgame and Infinity War are more action/spectacle driven. There's nothing wrong with either and his he is entitled to his opinion. All these people claiming he's jealous or ignorant seem to forget this.

The problem isn't if he's allowed to have a divergent opinion, of course he can. The real issue now is that he's advocating for those "theme parks" movies to NOT "invade" his precious theaters. And the fact that he's calling theaters owners to react in his favor just show how stubborn he is and if the possibility ever present itself, he will pressure them to reduce the frequency they release those kind of movies. That's sad. He is really vocal about it and it just shows his insecurities against a juggernaut like Marvel. I mean only 5% of movies in general released this year are actual "theme parks" movies.

He just need to chill about it, or maybe have an orher strategy to get rid of them, because now he's acting like a old man out of time who's against changes.

The theme park movies are what is keeping studios and theaters in business though. The masses are not going to show out for the irishman to end game type numbers, its never gonna happen. If its true most only see 2-3 movies in the theater a year then of course spectacle is gonna Win out because people want there moneys worth.

its all a business and then you throw in the Oscar contenders later in the year and it all balances out. I get what hes saying but theme park/blockbusters pay the bills and keep the studios open so indie and lesser character studies can happen.

Not sure since when a straight-to-TV movie means cinema, no matter how many 10/10s it gets. Even if I wanted to pay and see it in cinema I just didn’t know if there were any actual physical cinema would screen it uncut within reasonable travel distance, but it’s just me thinking too much. These days if someone wants to get to the headline fast, just bash MCU for whatever. I am amused to see even the de aging effects are up for bashing. What next? “Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict breeds catastrophe”

Can we stop spamming this thread about the Marvel comments. This is not the Martin Scorsese Discussion Thread, this is for The Irishman.

Maybe it is good idea to be made a separate thread?
