Born Again Season 1, Episode 4: "Sic Semper Systema" (SPOILERS)

Four episodes in and I’m still waiting for the mind blowing action scenes that we were promised

This show continues to deliver. Great epsiode.

Fisk being forced to two terrible versions of a Starhip song and one in Latvian will never not be funny. :funny:
All the Fisk stuff was great and along with Vanesa they are a strong pair on screen.

Its soooo good to have Bernthal back, did..... not........ miss...... a beat with the Punisher, such a good scene with him and Matt, cant wait for more from the pair, just electric on the screen together, nothing lost from the Netflix show there.

Just hearing him call Matt "Red" again was..........*chefs kiss*.

Another really strong episode again and didnt even need a bunch of action thrown in for actions sake, its all being set up nicely and the teases of Muse look really quite dark and a very different problem to what the main plot is developing into. Not being DD is eating Matt up on the inside and Frank is just pushing him further to return now.

Two episodes next week, cant friggin wait.................

I'm really enjoying Born Again and it really works for me that they have slowly built up to the darker parts of both Matt and Fisk. So many small building blocks consistently being put into place to get to where we ultimately want to see them. It of course helps that both those characters are so good that the performances alone elevate every scene they are in, no matter what they do.

The biggest standout scene was of course Matt finding Frank again. Such a great scene of emotional intensity and it's interesting seeing the most damaged of the two be the voice of reason.

My only real complaint is that I already feel that I need more than nine episodes.

How did Matt know the Punisher’s logo was on that shell casing? :funny:

Yeah, a guy who is a big DD fan explained it to me years ago that Matt’s hypersensitive touch sense is somehow able to discern colors and shapes. It’s how he knows his DD costume is red, etc.

Wait, how do you "feel" colors?

LOL it’s comic book science. Don’t think you hard about it.
No, I mean, hyper-sensitive powers is comic-booky but is rooted in real science. Everything Matt Murdock "feels" in the show hasn't been a problem for me thus far. It makes some sort of sense. But feeling colors, that's the first time I hear about it!

I liked this episode a lot. Jon Berthal was never on my radar as Frank Castle when he was initially cast in season 2, but when it happened, I was like "yep, that makes sense " and now I can't picture anyone else.

You can call me crazy all you want, but I actually enjoy this iteration more than the Netflix show (which I also loved.)

I don’t typically like legal dramas because I work as a lawyer all day and I don’t want work drama invading my recreation time. But this season on this show has been surprisingly accurate in how court proceedings work. The only knock I’d give it would be the fact that Hector’s trial was scheduled way too quickly.
But the depiction of the misdemeanor court and the petty theft case was crazy accurate. That’s actually how all of that would have gone down, from Matt meeting his client and then going in and finding a prosecutor who is only marginally invested in the case and getting a “good deal” by sheer charisma. That’s how those cases work. And the moral dilemma that Matt feels in having a client who is on probation but who is innocent, for whom staying in jail for 10 days is a “gift” despite doing absolutely nothing wrong—that’s all accurate of what you deal with in misdemeanor criminal courts. And that’s why that case wears on Matt just as much as White Tiger getting gunned down despite his acquittal. It’s all broken down justice.

This is brilliant storytelling. I know that people just want to see fights and dust-ups, but this is a layered story that tackles the “why” of Daredevil that does beyond the silly, superficial “his dad was killed and he has superpowered senses, so he can.”

I love that we are seeing Matt the man and lawyer here. I just wish that they’d lean more into Matt’s faith, which is also one of his key motivators.

Agreed
The "Built This City" bits had me and my fiancé in stitches, I didn't know Fisk could be so relatable and hilarious
"For our next song..." "No that's alright." :funny:

And Frank and Matt's conversations never fail to deliver

I am quite intrigued to see how the Muse and "Fake Punisher" stories coalesce by the end

Fisk, King of the City, trying to convince himself (and others) he can do things right, build and work within the "rules" of the system, he knows he can't, as we follow him down to his firkin dungeon.

Matt trying to convince himself he can be a "better" man, trying fill that void in the system, left by good people like Foggy.
Yet he knows he can't, people keep slipping through the cracks.
Punisher letting him know, reminding him, that ain't him, or his role, to survive he's gonna have to put on his "real" face.
As we follow him up to his roof top.

Love this show.

I will say, as a nitpick, I wish this wasn’t called “Born Again” as this has very little to do with that classic story, which I firmly believe to be the best Marvel comic story ever published and also Frank Miller’s best work.

This season is reminding me more of Chip Zdarsky’s run. All we would need would be Elodi Yung’s Elektra coming back and taking the Daredevil mantle to fill the gap while Matt deals with his crisis.

Yeah Matt and Fisk are much more similar than either cares to admit
The scars on their hands have been betraying the lies they keep telling themselves
And they both tried to lock their true selves away (masks and billy clubs for Matt, the painting and a prisoner for Fisk), but can't resist going back to indulge in it

To be fair, I might be wrong about this (I’ve only read a few DD comic books). But as it was explained to me, colors have unique temperatures and Matt can sense that. Red would be warmer than blue, for example, and so he could tell one from the other. As for discerning actual symbols and things, I’m not sure if that is due to this ability or just a combo of being able to read braille and having a radar sense that allows him to “see.”

When Frank started talking about seeing the ghost of his son, and the reaction Matt has when Frank questions if he also has ghosts following him. Man I teared up a bit, that was some superb acting.

Bernthal has easily cemented himself as the best onscreen Punisher, he gives Frank such humanity and pain despite what he does, so much so you almost understand it.

I can't wait for his Special Presentation.

Poor Fisk.

He had to sit and deal with those damn kids singing and then turn right around and listen to that Latvian choir do the same damn thing

So good. Especially because it was THAT song. It’s a classic but it also becomes one of the most annoying songs of all time if you hear it more than once a year. :funny:

Anyway though. With so many mentions of Latvia in this episode, I couldn't help but think, “Why not Latveria instead?”

But then I remembered RDJ and I was like, “Eh, never mind.”

And i just LOVED how the episode ended with Adam screaming “let me out!!” and juxtaposed that with Murdock training on the rooftop with the “let me out!!” being symbolic of Matt’s darker half begging to be let out. Great writing/editing.
