Falcon and Winter Soldier SEASON 1, EPISODE 5: TRUTH (SPOILERS)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus made her surprise MCU debut as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine the villainous big bad: Power Broker better known in the comics as Madame Hydra
- It has not been explicitly stated she's the Power Broker, although I think that's almost certainly the implication
- She's definitely not better known as Madame Hydra. She was a high ranking SHIELD agent and Nick Fury's love interest for decades. She was only undercover as Madame Hydra in one miniseries after she'd been part of SHIELD comics for almost 50 years. Although it was also that same miniseries (Secret Warriors) that revealed she had been under deep cover within SHIELD all this time and was actually an agent of the Russian group Leviathan.

Publications like Vanity Fair have said that she had been intended to show up in Black Widow first. I feel like that probably would've made more sense with her appearance in this episode.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised to see how certain everyone is that she is the Power Broker. Maybe she is but it's not stated explicitly. I at least would expect a more dramatic reveal than the one we saw.

She might be the one who actually starts the Thunderbolts initiative, maybe she'll pay Zemo a visit at the Raft in Ep 6.

Holy cow what an episode. Characters' bits were more hard-hitting than the super soldiers themselves.

I thought it was a little nod to Bucky knowing Steve so well that before Steve went back in time, Bucky told him he would miss him, knowing that he was going to stay in the past.

I guess it was more obvious that Steve just told him what he was going to do lol.
Yeah it’s like Steve to make sure Bucky knew he was going to give the shield to Sam

I would not have thought of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, but I’m intrigued by this casting and curious to see what she does with the role. I was always surprised that the character hadn’t shown up yet, in either the MCU proper or Agents Of SHIELD.

They're setting her up to be the Power Broker or at least the right-hand person for whoever is. If she's not the Power Broker, I suspect it'll be Thunderbolt Ross and we'll see him start forming the Thunderbolts, with John Walker's US Agent being their first recruit. With Zemo on the Raft and Ross having some potential control over that, we may see him get Zemo on the team as well. I wouldn't be shocked if we see potentially see Emil Blonsky's Abomination on the team since he's supposedly showing up in She-Hulk.

Another possibility to connect her to future projects is to make her play a Skrull sent to spy on Nick Fury and other heroes by posing as the real Contessa. She was killed by Fury and that is what tipped him off to the Secret Invasion.

Can’t wait to see Sam suit up in the Wakandan CA costume. It makes sense that he would have some sort of vibranium armor since he’s definitely not going to get the super soldier serum.

Contessa recruiting people like U.S. Agent, Yelena Belova and Abomination for Ross honestly would feel more like the MCU version of Victoria Hand recruiting the Dark Avengers for Osborn than Thunderbolts. But I guess they could combine those storylines to some extent. I'm personally hoping we'll see iconic Thunderbolts members show up as minor villains who get sent to the raft.

I know Killmonger had them all burned, but it would be nice if the Wakandans hooked Sam up with some of that heart shaped herb.

Remind me what the Raft is again? I thought it was some Wakandan thing?

I'm sure they've grown some more since then. Especially since nearly 8 years have gone by in-universe (Black Panther takes place just after CW in 2016).

Best episode of the entire series! I will rewatch this one multiple times.

The prison in the ocean we saw in Civil War.

Oh that one. Is that the same one where he escaped a few episodes ago? I thought Ayo wanted to bring him to Wakanda so they can jail him there?

Good chance all of the future thunderbolts will be in the raft until Ross puts them to use.

Man this episode. Of all the bombs that were dropped here, the scene that left the most impact on me was that conversation between Isaiah and Sam. I know this is fiction, but the writers really weaved it all well with what we endure and how Bradley said no self respecting black man would ever be Captain America. That conversation was just really deep, especially considering the climate of what's going on today.

But I say all that to say, I'm excited to see Sam suit up next week, more of Julia's character, US Agent and to see how they wrap this up. Can't believe Sharon's evil, Aunt Peggy is turning in her grave! She better be playing double agent.

Great episode.

Holy s***, this was probably the best episode of any tv show in the history of ever. No way the finale tops this, but that's ok, it doesn't have to.

I don't know why everyone is assuming JLD's character is the Power Broker. I didn't get that vibe at all. In fact, to me, that little convo between Sharon and Batroc confirmed Sharon as the Power Broker. "I can give you double this time."

Call me crazy but I don't think Valentina has anything to due with Madripoor or the Power Broker.

Can't wait to see Sam's new suit!

i'm not sure if sharon is the power broker. her agenda seems to be all over the place. she helps sam and bucky but then sends in batroc who wants to kill sam. power broker sends texts to karli saying he/she will kill them for what they stole yet sharon is sending karli help (in the form of batroc).

i think sharon is either a spy of some sort or is head flagsmasher. my guess is that she is still working for some agency.

Maybe Im alone in my corner but I still hate everything has to do with the boat and the pacing was incredible bad for me. It was the first time in every MCU project I actually felt bored and watched on my mobile phone.

If Sam didnt get any big character speech moment next episode Im really disappointed.

Yeah I’m not big on the boat, my only thinking is if Batroc decides to blow it up and Sam as Cap has a chance to kill Batroc but puts it down, something Walker didn’t do.
