Season 7, Episode 4 "The Spoils of War" Discussion Thread

As I recall, Bran has already declined/indicated that he can't be Lord of Winterfell, not with him being the Three-Eyed-Raven. Sansa remains in charge while Jon is gone and Jon remains King in the North.

Edit: Yup, it was last episode when he's talking with Sansa:

Sansa: You're father's last living trueborn son, you're Lord of Winterfell now.

Bran: I can never be Lord of Winterfell, I can never be lord of anything. I'm the Three-Eyed Raven.

He is still "Lord of Winterfell" in the eyes of his bannerman and the common people. They probably think he's just crazy, so they might just say "yeah bring back Sansa to be in charge".

so who would fly the 3rd dragon? would it be Bran? A part of me wants to see Arya flying 1

Most people seem to think that it'd be Tyrion, at least from what I've observed.

I wonder if Jaimie and/or Bronn will be taken captive? I mean they were really close to Dany, and surrounded by her army. Plus it'd give Tyrion another chance to talk to his brother, Dany to finally meet the man who killed her father face to face, and Bronn to do the smart thing and switch sides.

Is he though? We've seen no reaction yet from the bannermen on what they think of Bran's return (note: not sure Littlefinger counts since he tries to butter up with anyone that he perceives as someone that could have power)

You're right. A scene would be nice. If only to see how the people respond to him. After believing he was dead for all these years. Also a quick mention of them trying deal with Rickon and Robb's deaths.

Bronn is still the best character on Game of Thrones. Jerome Flynn might very well be one of the best actors living on this planet.
A good example of his acting is in season 4 when he comes to Tyrion's cell to explain why he can't be his champion. Great stuff there from both of them.

Definitly. The Dothrakis were enough to completely stomp the Lannister and Tarly army, don't bring foot soldiers to a cavalry fight.

Daeny joining the fight with Drogon was simply to keep the casualties in her army as low as possible and morever to finally get off some steam after being outmatched in the previous episodes.
And make a big statement about dragons. Frankly I don't know why they didn't just surrender when they saw Drogon. After word spreads, that's a huge mental edge.

1. They made a concerted effort to show Drogon burning the supplies and gold of the Lannisters. The dragon would have been the most efficient way of doing that. Unlike the Lord of the Rings movies or other fantasy series, this show constantly reminds the audience that wars are fought more by logistics than by dashing men with horses and swords.

I guess the question remains is how ****ed Cersei is with her gold, food supplies and army destroyed. Will the support of the Iron Bank fall away? Or will the Iron Bank double down on supporting the Lannisters, because of the disruptiveness and instability that Dany represents?
They mentioned that the gold made it to Cersei. And then there was the scene with the Iron Bank where they talk about how quickly she paid him and he is begging her to borrow more money.

I thought that one of the dragons would fall this episode. It didn't happen. But now at least it will serve as a wake up call for Daenerys and a decent amount of hope for Cersei and her aspirations in taking down at least one of the dragons.
My next move would be to look into some kind of armor for the dragons. Don't know if it's possible or would make a difference (they are already pretty armored up) but I would look into it.

Don't be so sure. If Qyburn's as clever as he appears then he'd realize the odds against scoring a bulls-eye on a flying target were slim even under the best conditions and would have taken steps to render the scorpion even more lethal. Like coating the tips of the scorpion's bolts with some of that Dornish poison Oberyn was so fond of using on his weapons. If he did that, Drogon's as good as dead already.

If that's true I'm pretty impressed that they managed to keep the arrows coated with poison at all times through all weathers.

Probably my favorite shot in the episode.

I'd guess none in the army wanted to surrender while Dothraki riders were in the vicinity. But yeah I saw Drogon, I instantly drop my weapons and bend the knee.

He hasn't been paid yet when they have that talk. His last line to her is about what the Iron Bank is willing to do for them once they get paid.

So Jamie and his horse are in ankle deep water as they're charging Daenerys

Bronn tackles him into the water about 5-6 feet from the horse and

1. That's what Bran looked like falling from the First Keep.
2. That's what Tyrion looked like sinking in Valyria.

Does it need to be excused? This is like complaining about the random cliff in Jurassic Park. It is there, because it needs to be there. And it worked very well in the scene.

Bran was rude af to meera lol. Id push him off his chair

Drogon is a magical being. Probably the toughest most resilient animals on the planet. And they have a massive body mass with an insane internal body temperature. In the books a spear that stabs Drogon melts while it is stuck inside of him. We havent gotten to see whether that happens in the show, but it probably takes more than some poison on a spear tip to kill Drogon. I would think any poison would be burned away once it entered his body.

Quite an epic episode. That battle was nearly on par with Hardhome for me. I really thought that Bronn was a goner.

I wish we had more with Theon and Jon. Theon was all like "oh hi Jon, nice to see you there old chap"

He should have. Either he or Jamie should have died in this episode.

Yes but capturing enemy logistics is more valuable. This is (partially) how Rommel's Afrika Korps made a rapid advance across Libya and into Egypt during WW2 --by capturing British supply depots.

The dragonfire should have been directed solely at enemy ranks and then the Dothraki could have certainly overrun the remains (as they did anyway) and captured the goods. It was -after all- established in a previous scene that Dany needs to feed her horde! Oops!

Randyll Tarly mentioned some stragglers who ought to be flogged, so it's possible there may be more wagons to capture.

Does Dany represent that, or the restoration of a 300 year old ruling dynasty in Westeros?

The Lannisters have no heirs, no future. The bank wants to back a winner --for a change. They had to eat it after lending to Stannis.

Dependoing on howe old Cersei is, she could still produce an heir with Euron (or, more likely, Jaime). Even if she didn't, she could still do what childless monarchs have always done, handpick a successor.

As a scene i don't know if this show can top this for me...

"I'm not leaving my men." They've done a good job with his arch.
