I've noticed info for episode 15 has now hit the web. We've been told repeatedly there's a countdown sequence of 5 episodes to finish up the series.

That would mean very soon something has to give for Smallville to get the proper ending we're all looking for.

I've seen nothing suggesting Tom has signed on for season 9.
I've seen nothing suggesting CW is picking up the show for a 9th season.
I've seen nothing suggesting Season 8 will be the last.

That's the trend - a whole lot of nothing. And for a date that's fast approaching that concerns me. It could mean a season 8 that assumes it's the last and ends up painting itself into a corner if there is a season 9 (as in not having much left to do). It could also mean a season 8 that assumes a season 9 and delays what they should be doing to give the show it's proper ending.

Just throwing all this out there because I've heard no movement on any front and I feel like there should have been by now.

Dude, the showrunners have proclaimed many times that this seasons finale has been written two different ways, one to end as a series finale & the other to continue into a season 9. There is nothing to worry about, they unlike G & M know what thier doing. Close thread.

ok first off there is 22 episodes for the 8th season. So there is 8 episodes left after episode 15. Secondly networks dont usually start season pickups to feb-march at the earliest and may/june at the latest. Secondly, tom hasnt dont any contract negosigations yet, and they probably wont be to when the show comes back after winter break in late jan. And they probably dont want to do negositigations untill they have a better view if the cw will still be around and they got a early pickup order. As for tom himself we dont know how he feels about things currently besides reports saying all the cast/crew are much happier now then they have been last few seasons.

So yea tom wasnt a happy campier that few seasons but maybe with the changes that have taken place he is open to sign for more if thats the cast. As for if season 8 is the end or isnt it was confirmed many times in interviews the producers have plans set to go to wrap up the show and plans to leave it open for a 9th season. And if the network was to end it this season they would probably give them the call while their is still like 3-4 episodes left of filming to close it out.

with the way how doomsday is looking we have now the perfect chance to end this show really .........BIG
let them fight in this episode. let clark lose. defeated. then we can have some filler episodes. then the last episode that is the series finale ...... doomsday comes back. clark with oliver makes the suit. or maybe he goes to FOS and hes father gives him the suit.
then the last scene should be in metropolis. imagine hulk vs ABO in TIH. they start ruinnig......clark starts to fly....he goes super fast and then the last scene of smallville.........BOOM....end

i say end it now. and we can in 10 years remember a really fantastic last season. or we can remember a show that got canceled.

I don't think Smallville will ever get canceled in mid-season. The writers will show their ending no matter what. So it doesn't matter if it ends in 8, 9 or 20.

i think i used the wrong word. i didnt mean in hte mid-season. i mean that because of bad ratings that they wouldnt make a new season.

i am shocked to see this kind of doomsday. this is the best lokking villain from the superman universe in smallville. this season is a big stepp up from the last 3 seasons. but he is to old now and its the 8th season.
i say use some filler episodes and save the money for the last episode. and make it BIG. it can be epic with the suit and doomsday and superman flying or running at each other.

Boo that. This show is becoming pretty much what I've always wanted from Smallville/any Superman show. Clark and Lois at the Daily Planet, Justice League, no sidekick, Brainiac, Doomsday...This season is freakin sweet. If they could get Tom, Erica and Aaron back for 1 more season, as long as they have good stories to tell, I'm all for it.

'Course, a jump to the big screen could be pretty sweet as well...And how many people watch Smallville weekly? Multiply by that by $10 just on opening weekend alone, and you've got a hit. But now I'm just getting off on fantasyland tangents.

CW wont announce who's coming back or not until the Up Fronts in May, which will take place about a week or two before the Season 8 Finale.

Although if I'm a betting man, considering Smallville is the highest rated show on the Network, I'd say right about now they're making a big push to secure Welling for a 9th and final season. More likely than not, they have a 'zero barrier" for signing him, and if they can't, they then write episodes 18 - 22 as the "launch sequence." I'd assume that time is fast approaching, possibly before the Holiday Break. if we know episode 15's title by now, that means that 16 and 17 aren't far behind in terms of being written.

will they have?
looks like they are doing everything in this season.

I think the ratings for this season will make them give us another one to be honest. There is NO reason why anyone shouldn't watch smallville even if your just jumping on its pretty easy to catch up and know whats going on and to be honest this is one of the best seasons, I am really enjoying it.

To be honest, I thought season 7 should have been it... and then season 8 should have been it... and then, fine, dammit! Season 9, but I ain't gonna be happy about it! But now... I wouldn't be so averse. We'll see how the rest of the season goes, but golly... the new Powers have really shot some new life into this show, to the point where, if Season 9 could be (possibly) even better than 8, then dang... bring it on.

With PS3, of course.

This season has easily been the best season since season two, my personal favorite.

if 9 could be better then 8 or even on the same level then OK. but they are doing so much this season that there will be nothing left IMO for 9. so what then? again filler episodes?

Well, it would certainly grow far beyond the boundaries set in the previous seasons, far outside the limits of "old" Smallville, physically and in terms of scope (as is already becoming the case this season), but the new Powers have already earned my trust for the rest of the season. If it holds, I'd be excited, not really concerned, about where next they could or would take the story.

Just saw this on Ask Ausiello:

Question: Please tell me there's going to be a 9th season of Smallville after what is possibly one of the best seasons so far? -- Joanne
Ausiello: I hear The CW will likely take the don't-fix-if-not-broke approach and keep its Thursday line-up intact next season. (Attention Smallville fans: Scroll down to the bottom of this column and watch an exclusive preview of Chloe and Jimmy's apocalyptic nuptials!) In related news, there was a wild rumor going around last week that Supernatural received a green light for a fifth season. The network quickly squashed it, but, man, for about 30 minutes last Monday I thought Christmas had come early for all you Supe Nazis.

Ah-ha. Sounds more and more likely.

Well Auseilo can be just going by the numbers and logically predict that the CW doesn't want to mess with the Smallville/Supernatural thing going.
