What I found works best against him is to be proactive. Keep attacking him and when he is going to counter, dodge towards him, not away. You'll usually end up behind him, giving you free hits.
You'll take him down quickly this way.
First phase was quite easy. Trouble started when the other ape showed up. But then I used the firecrackers to bend her to her knees and finish her quickly. Only twice was necessary.Trust me when I tell you that it is easier than it seems @Jick
Are you using the spear trick on the headless ape or fighting him straight up? Anywho when the wife appears concentrate on her but try to engage when they're a little separated
Guardian Ape in Sunken Valley is some bull****, eh?
There are plenty of guides. My advice is if you want the platinum, you look them up. Even if you don't, Return seems to be the "secret/real" ending. That is the one that involves the snake items and the divine child. It is a bit complex on her end, so you might need to look it up.I'm unsure which ending I will be getting haven't looked up requirements, I did get the snake items though which i heard you need for one of the 3 endings.

She dissapeared on me (Divine child) don't know where she went.
You know I tried that and didn't notice her, I'll check again!
Firecrackers on the first phase and you can also use the shield on the second phase, since it completely blocks the terror roar, while you move behind the ape for some free hits after it's done roaring.Guardian Ape in Sunken Valley is some bull****, eh?
