Emrys said:That is why I consider getting minimum wage in such a constelation adds only insult to injury. Before I would let myself fall that low I would rather stop working alltogether. After all if I can't pay for the basics I might very well enjoy my free time instead of wasting it on work.

Addendum said:Low productivity workers are already dismissed. I've sacked a few workers because they fail to grasp the simple concept that you do your job when you work.
I've no sympathy or concern for those who dick around on the clock

I know there are all sorts of complications and stuff.

Future Prez said:How can you be against raising the minimum wage? Families that live on it are struggling to survive. It hasn't been raised in almost ten years, yet the cost of living has gone up how much?
What is it meant to do then? Encourage people to just go on welfare rather than work around the clock to not be able to feed/clothe their kids? I wish I felt bad for the small business owner, but there is something called "the cost of doing business".celldog said:If you can sustain a family on minimum wage, it wouldn't be a "minimum wage"! It was never meant to do that! Plus you put the small business owner out of business. Then nobody has a job.
RedIsNotBlue said:Of course it is but the UK doesn't have to deal with an extraordinary amount of illegal immigrants coming over and doing jobs for chump change. We really need to take serious action on this immigrant situation and send them all back so that the deserving peoplecan get the fair wages they deserve.

Funny. I thought minimum wage was for "entry-level" positions, and that the worker actually does their job and earns a raise or a promotion based on their job performance, instead of spending 30 years as a bagger or cart guy at the local grocery store and waiting for congress to bump your pay.rdh007 said:What is it meant to do then? kainedamo said:The purpose of the minimum wage is that a person should be ale to get their bare necessities out of it. That means food, rent, electric - the basics. The minimum wage in the US is not adequate.
kainedamo said:I'm not talking about people living at the Ritz, though. I'm talking about one bedroom flats with one tv and one telephone. In an ideal world, the minimum wage should be enough for at least that much.
There are alot of people that can't get better than minimum wage. For example, people out of prison. It's very difficult for people that are just out of prison to get decent jobs. People that live in crap areas with crap schools. Etc.
I don't know. Look at the stats or something. If the amount of people in the US living on the edge of poverty is too high, then the minimum wage is clearly too low.
