Comics Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1

I Swear, this is always the case with comic fans. Negative comics and so on get thousands of posts...but when something positive comes around, meh nothing.

Sensational Spider-man Annual #1 was hands down one of the best stories I've read in a long time. How could there possibly be any doubt as to the marriage situation between Peter and MJ? The spider-marriage is and always will be the best couple in comics. Like someone mentioned earlier, this was pretty much a slap in the face to anything that Joey Q was saying.

I would go as far as to say this was one of my top 5 Spider-stories of all time. Absolutely loved it.

Aloha,
First off, LOVED the issue. Between Spider-Man Blue,Parallel ives and this , I think-This annual beats them. Second, you are so right when you lament that more fans are not singing the praises of this book ALL OVER MARVEL. Whenever SPider-GIRL fans are taken more seriously than Spider-MAN fans- it's time for we the fans to take stock in our approach. This is hands down some of the best writing of the Peter/MJ marraige EVER-IMO. Let's push this book to the fans and go on all of the boards and sing the praises of this book.
Spidey rules with a solid marriage

I agree, I enjoyed this annual more then I did Spider-man Blue. Don't get me wrong, Blue was an amazing series and truely a classic, but the Annual had me captivated and smiling the whole way through.

THIS is the Peter/Mj we all know and love.

I think its about time my Peter/MJ thread got a little bump action. Let me go find that sucka.

I don't know if I'd agree it was better than Blue, but I will conceit that it's a really great companion piece to Blue.

It's been said, but this issue is great. Easily my favorite "Unmasked" story. Or rather, the only "Unmasked" story I've enjoyed.

I haven't read it yet, but I can tell I will already love it.

:yay:

I was surprised that I liked this Annual as much as I did, but I'm really glad that I bought it. The nods to continuity were great to see.

A question: The scenes where Pete and MJ are discussing the tapes that they made and the airport scene, did those things actually happen in a past Spidey comic? Or did the Annual writer make them up? I hope they are past continuity, for the reason that I like a writer that does his or her research.

That flashback didn't occure in any of the old Spider-Man comics, but to be fair there weren't any good moments to take as flashbacks before their first kiss at the airport. It was basiclly all typical Spidey ditching her to go save the day.

I loved the part where Peter smashes through the window, scoops up MJ, and jumps back out, while avoiding gun fire at point blank range, from several highly-trained FBI agents.

Now THAT, my friends, is The Amazing Spider-Man. :spidey:

Haha So true.

Been a while since I've seen Spidey use that kind of agility

This annual is probably my favorite Spidey story within the last 5 years. It was not complicated with long arcs, villians, or a strange plot, but was rather simplistic and great. I too enjoyed the great flashback scenes with Gwen/Harry/Peter/MJ/Flash. Marvel really needs to take note of this...

If stories like this and Spider-man:Swing Shift were done more often I think Spidey would be in great shape right now.It is a highly enjoyable issue.

I don't remember the tapes scenes, but the scene in the airport is exactly the same scene, but from a slightly different angle, story-wise.

It would be an atrocity to kill off Mj after a story like this. I think this pretty much told us that Mj's here to stay.

I just had to agree with everyone else. Sensational issue, really well done and it makes you truly care for the characters and what happens to them. It's a shame some "Other" writers don't get what a great thing the marriage can be when written well.

wasnt Spider-Man sensational long before she-hulk?

Well, the "Sensational She-Hulk" started up in 1991, I think, and Sensational started up around 1995-96...I think. There maybe an older Sensational Spidey, but I can't recall it right now.

As for thisd annual, it's a shame that it isn't garnering more praise, but if it were crap, everyone and his mother would be here hating on it.

Finally just got around to reading this... and to be honest, I haven't got anything to say about this issue that hasn't already been said here.

Great read

One question though- That Brady guy, have we really seen him before, or is he a new character?

One of the Marvel Tales books had the sub-title The Sensational Spider-Man, so there you go. He pre-dated Shulkie there. Plus, the trade that collects his fight with Juggernaut was also dubbed Sensational.

Thanks! I thought there was something...my brain is a little foggy today...

Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1 was one of the best Peter & Mary Jane issues . nuff said .

Hell yeah . :spidey:

Just wondering can anyone recap the story. Because it sounds awesome.

I really hope this story ultimately doesn't come off as a goodbye to the marriage in the present comics' storyline.

I keep waiting for the day that Quesada's madness is going to blow-up back in his face. I hope it's soon.

The story is told as a flashback. It opens with Pete and MJ standing on the tippy top of the Empire State Building imagining the world with just the two of them.

Then it flashes back to earlier that day. MJ stops by the Coffee Bean (their old hang out from the college days). A man strikes up a conversation with her and reminds her that they knew each other when she was in Hollywood. He was one of her bodyguards. Then he reveals he works for SHIELD and is taking her in for aiding a fugitive; the coffee shop is also full of agents. She starts telling him a story about the Coffee Bean and about the early days of dating Peter (there's a cute story about a mix tape that you'll have to read on your own; I don't want to spoil it).

It then cuts to Peter secretly meeting with Lt. Lamont. Peter wants to turn himself in because he feels so guilty over what he's done to his family by outing himself. He starts to tell his side of the same mix tape story and why he loves MJ so much and wants her to have a better life. Lamont tells Peter to leave and never talk to him again.

Meanwhile, the agent suggests to MJ that she should turn Peter in and makes the suggestion that she and the agent could build on the relationship they had in California. MJ scoffs at the idea that there even was a relationship (you'll have to read this part, too, it's really good) and reaffirms her devotion to Pete. He decides to take her off to jail when he sees the Spider-tracer she had activated several minutes before.

MJ then admits she was stalling and introduces the agent to her husband as Pete crashes through the window. He grabs her, jumps around, missing several gunshots and they swing out the window. They end up back at the Empire State Building to watch the sunset together.
