Saw it today. Enjoyed it. It definitely had the essence of the show. While the series finale pissed me off royally, i really enjoyed the film and Big grew on me a little. Wasn't keen on him at all in the television series.

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

New Line Cinema and HBO Films' Sex and the City surpassed all expectations, opening to an estimated $55.7 million from 3,285 theaters for an average of $16,968 per location. The Friday-to-Sunday figure marks the biggest R-rated comedy opening of all time, beating the $45.1 million debut of American Pie in 1999. Among all R-rated films, it ranks as the fifth-biggest behind The Matrix Reloaded ($91.8 million), The Passion of The Christ ($83.8 million), 300 ($70.9 million) and Hannibal ($58 million). The film is also the best opening ever for a live-action adaptation of a TV series, beating Mission: Impossible's $45 million opening. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, the Michael Patrick King-directed pic cost about $65 million to make.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped a respectable 54% in its second weekend to $46 million to bring its domestic total to an impressive $216.8 million so far. The movie was budgeted at around $185 million.

Also performing better-than-expected was Rogue Pictures' The Strangers in third place. The suspense thriller, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, earned an estimated $20.7 million from 2,467 theaters for an average of $8,393. Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the movie only cost $9 million to make.

Marvel Studios and Paramount's Iron Man added another $14 million its fifth weekend in fourth to bring its domestic total to $276.6 million. The Robert Downey Jr. starrer was budgeted at $140 million.

The comic book adaptation passed up The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which had to settle for third place with $13 million. After three weeks, the sequel has collected $115.7 million compared to its budget of $200 million.

In sixth, Fox's What Happens in Vegas earned $6.9 million to bring its total to $66.1 million after four weeks. The comedy cost just $35 million to make.

only 56 million i was expecting more after a 26 million dolloar friday.

It sure really made a down slope there.

I still have to laugh at people saying this thing was gonna bomb, it won't make any money, etc. If you truly call yourself a film geek, you should have known from jump street. Sure it may not have "legs" but it's already made its budget back, so they ain't exactly worried.

Well it kinda did. It made less then 60 million especially when you make 26 million on one night and only like another 30 the next two days for a supposed blockbuster.

That's not a bomb. At all. :whatever:

I saw it today--in the middle of the afternoon--and it was nearly sold out. This movie is doing very well.

I need some music help...

What is the song that's playing when Carrie is trying on all the designer wedding gowns?

I think it might be Fergie but I am really not sure. I'm not in music that much, but I really like the feel of that song??

I saw it Saturday night and enjoyed it a lot. It was exactly what it promised to be - a continuation of the series. I saw quite a few boyfriends attending with their girlfriends. I'm sure they were rewarded for their selfless behavior. There were a lot of beautiful women dressed to the nines in my theater (I'm in L.A.). Honestly, if I was a straight male, I would sneak into the show just for the female audience eye candy.

Didn't make as much as my fearless prediction, but it did very well. It had the highest opening weekend gross for a romantic comedy ever. Not too shabby.

I don't think Sex and the City was suppose to be a Blockbuster.

I think they meant to say Narnia had to settle for fifth, not third, place. Anyway, Indy falling to 2nd in its second week of release is kinda surprising, esp. against a R-rated comedy that has mainly female audience (summer movies usually appeal to young males, not older females), and 54% drop is a bit steep. It will make 300 mil, but probably not that much after that.

Remember Indiana Jones had an extra Thursday and Monday totaling $50 million between the 2 days. That drop (54%) is minor when you add that into the mix.

I went with the Mrs. tonight. I didn't understand half of what they were saying about fashion and most of the movie just seemed like people sitting around talking and drinking. It was like Seinfeld with bars instead of coffee shops and without good humor. :csad:

Oh, Matt you just aren't sophisicated enough to get it. Your chromosomes prevent you from fully understanding the phenomenon that is Carrie Bradshaw and her tumultous affairs with Mr. Big. :o :oldrazz:

54% is a pretty typical drop for a movie in it's second weekend. Especially with the money Indy has already made. Sex and the City had a decent chance at beating it this weekend with all the hype surrounding the movie, plus it's finally a movie for woman to flock to the theaters for. I think it'll drop like a rock now though, like it's already showing, all the women had their girl's night out to watch the movie and probably won't pay to see it a second or third time.

Women aren't like us, who will go see a damn movie over and over to criticize, see reactions from others, boost its box office, and other things that lead us closer to not being laid.

A 54% drop from Memorial Day weekend isn't bad at all, and Indy actually won Saturday and Sunday, it was the big Friday for SATC that gave it the #1 weekend. I would have been happy with either of them in the top spot, I enjoyed both movies.

And I can't speak for all women, but I know after seeing the movie last weekend, I'd rather start re-watching my DVDs of the series this weekend than see the movie again right away. By the time I finish, the DVD will be out.

Actually, I'll probably see Indy again this weekend.

I voted 5. There were a few chuckles. I probably would've given it a 3 under normal circumstances, but the wife loved it and I think she was the audience it was intended for, not me...so, I'll be generous.

I guess this is proof that KOTCS isn't doing that well for Sex to top it.

i didn't like Indy4, and i've never watched so much as an episode of sex and the city, but indy is getting close to $500 million worldwide in a few short weeks.

i'd hardly call that "not doing well".

And again, Indy actually outgrossed SATC on Saturday and Sunday. SATC had a huge opening day on Friday, and that's what put it at #1 for the weekend.

Indy is doing fine.
