Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings General Discussion and Speculation thread

Looks fun. I wouldn’t worry too much about Limu not having a lot of dialogue in this trailer. I know the actor is an unknown but most of the dialogue came from the voiceover. Even Awkwafina didn’t say much and you know that she’s going to have plenty of dialogue in this movie.

Some of the CGI is iffy but overall I’m intrigued. Marvel hasn’t let me down yet aside from Thor 2 and Iron Man 3.

I’m just a bit confused though... did they push Eternals back and this forward? I thought Eternals was coming out first.

It was okay. I've seen lots of martial arts films so this didn't wow me that much. I'd want to see things as spectacular as these other martial arts films. Also would've preferred more landscapes and plains than in the city. It's more like a modern Jackie Chan film than one of his classics.

Also Akwafina seems to be playing the same kind of character she always is.

Have to agree in terms of the martial arts. But to be fair not much was shown so far except for some of the acrobatic parts of the martial art. And ya , seems like they are going with the modern route which is understandable I guess since it's probably more common and "easier" to execute.

Ahhh looks like Brad Allan is the coordinator. He was a member of the JC stunt team I believe.

If anyone hasn't seen it yet, watch Kim's Convenience. Probably one of my favorite shows in the last few years and you'll probably get a better sense of Simu as an actor.

Anyway, I thought the trailer was good, so I'm excited for it.

No, it was supposed to come out in February 2021 (then May 2021) and Eternals in November 2020 (then February 2021 and lately Nov. 2021)
They changed it when they rescheduled for the 3rd time

Now I'm curious which Avenger is going to make an appearance to tie into the larger story arc of the MCU?

Does it need to be an Avenger though? It could always be:

Batroc in the fighting tournament or an appearance from Jimmy Woo.

I mean it doesn't have to be an Avenger, but I suspect we'll get a cameo of some kind of existing MCU character. Just like all the other films.

yeah, I'm not expecting the cameo until the mid or post credits but I will be shocked if there's not one.

When The Mandarin had his "join me, son" speech, and Shang-Chi said "that's not gonna happen", I had strong vibes of Batman Begins with the whole "I'll be standing where I belong....between you and the people of Gotham".
Considering they cut dialogue all the time to make it seem like characters are talking to each other, I doubt those two lines are from the same scene.

It'll be interesting to see just how this ties into the grand scheme of the MCU

We didn't get any Avenger cameos in Ant-Man and the Wasp, or in Doctor Strange apart from Thor's mid-credits scene which was just a clip of a scene from Ragnarok. No cameo in Black Panther either except Bucky in the mid-credits.

Going out on a limb and saying:

Batroc appears in the fighting tournament, depending on when the movie takes place

Well Trevor Slattery was taken by a Ten Rings guy, and since many people haven't seen All Hail the King I imagine we'll get some kind of clarification about the Ten Rings appearing in Iron Man 1, Iron Man 3, Ant-Man and Shang-Chi. Like which ones were under Wenwu the real Mandarin, which ones were under AIM/Aldrich Killian.

I could also see Madripoor show up again in this. That would be an interesting location in Asia for a fight/tournament/Ten Rings deal.

I dont expect any Avenger cameos. Mentions of the Iron Man films to tie together the Marvel lore? Sure. But I don't expect a proper Avenger in this movie. But a cameo I think could happen is Trevor. In the All Hail the King One Shot, the Ten Rings guy took him to the real Mandarin, so maybe he is there in a jail or something.

If the fighting tournament takes place in Madripoor, it could be the MCU connection that this film will have.

people who don’t watch F&WS won’t see that connection.
Not every fan of the MCU watches every series.
I wouldn’t have remembered
Batroc
if not some people said he was in
Captain America: the Winter Soldier

So rewatched it and I noticed 2 things

-We see some shots of Mandarin in the ancient past. Combined with what we know from EW article, Mandarin is definitely an Immortal with a long history

-In one of the ancient past Flashbacks, We see Mandarin lead an army of Mongols against the Red robed warriors. I'm guessing the Red robed warriors are guarding whatever Magical Macguffin, the Mandarin is after.

My guess is the war between the 10 rings and the Red robed folks is still on to modern day

-The Red Robed Warriors clearly live in Harmony with Mythical Creatures. We see Dragons,Kirins aiding them in Battle. And from the toy leak we know that there's a Dijiang in this movie, likely from the Red-robed warriors.

Theory Time
The Mac-guffin the Red Robed warriors are guarding is Fin Fang Foom. Mandarin wants the Dragon under his control
-Shang chi will ally with the Red robed warriors against the Mandarin

I'm in the mood for a martial arts film tonight. What should I watch? Any recommendations?

Well now I'm definitely looking forward to this, especially with me getting some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Vibes from that trailer which I wasn't expecting at all.

I do wish Dinsey/Marvel they would dial it back on the CGI at times, but man some of the shots in that trailer looked absolutely gorgeous and the martial arts action looks really solid so far.

I mean I'll take this anyday over whatever they were trying to do with that Netflix Iron Fist show eventhough I didn't hate it, but man what a desserive they did to that character and hopefully one day he'll also be done properly on the bigscreen and we get to see the guys eventually team up at some point.

Still there should be some connection to the MCU, even if Wenwu mentions that the Ten Rings once kidnapped an Avenger (Tony Stark in Iron Man 1). That should be more than enough.

Depends what type you're after - whether it's more of the wirework type or more classic martial arts where there's more actual fighting skill instead of defying gravity like Elphaba.
