Shazam Shazam General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

What are the family going to go by as adults? I don't see Freddy being Captain Marvel Jr since they are are unlikely to call Billy Captain Marvel. And I don't see Mary being Mary Marvel.

With the Shazam Family being a superhero squad then I wonder if Henry Cavill's Superman will still show up in this film?

This was never really resolved in the new52 reboot of the team, or rather maybe Geoff Johns and Garry Frank never fully thought out what Mary, Freddy and the new Lieutenants; Eugene, Darla and Pedro call themselves when transformed? Pedro asks- Are we "Shazams too!?"

Freddy suggests wanting to be "King Shazam", so maybe they were going to go by chess designations: King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook?
Although they are not using Marvel, there is no reason they can't still keep Captain, and by extension expand on the others with Military rank designations.
Billy would obviously still be Captain. The others like the traditional Lieutenants have different added ranks.

Another suggestion was going by referencing their respective Deity acronym Namesakes: Hercules, Zeus, Mercury, etc..
Or simply their respective power attributes: Wisdom, Strength, Courage, Power, Stamina, Speed.
Or like Power-Rangers their colors: Shazam-Green, Shazam-Blue, Shazam-Red etc.

In the end when transformed, they end up just using their personal names, among each-other.
How that if overheard affects their secret ID...?

It kind of does have that "IT meets Goonies type "Big" thing going on

Freddy should go by SoundHound.

I wonder if they will go over such things like iPhones or Instagram or Snapchat in this film especially since it relates to kids well teenagers but them making that transition turning into adult superheroes seemingly by magic overnight

Why not ?
They can't use "Captain Marvel" as comic book / movie title and in the movie for Billy Batson.

But, Nothing prevents them from using "Mary Marvel", unless they are scared that Disney would pull them into courts for using it, even then Mouse would lose that case.

Why not ?
.
It's pretty simple, read her brand name ^What word is missing from all this product, merchandising, of the character.
This has been the case since 1972.
Sure they can use it inside the comic or film, but they can't(as you indicate without expecting a fight in court) for anything significant use that word to sell, promote, brand the character in any way. And now more importantly to promote the film, on any trailers, posters or promo for it. Even if they have the legal right to use it attached to Mary, not only won't they use it, but it's toxic to them as it promotes the competition.
And (right or wrong) Marvel/now Disney) will argue it infringes.
So other than potentially a throwaway line in the film, they won't call her that.

Doesn't Mary Marvel derive from the Captain Marvel trademark? And since Marvel own that character, it's unlikely that the Shazam movie would want to be seen to be infringing on that trademark in any way.

I can imagine them having a scene like in X-Men First Class where they are all trying to decide on names for themselves. Someone could suggest Captain Marvel (or Mary Marvel) and then would get immediately shot down by another.

It would be more like a pop culture reference, a bit like how Aunt May says to Peter Parker "You're not Superman you know" in the first Spider-Man film.

Or like how in Legends of Tomorrow they've made references to Spider-Man before.

But they always treat these references as if they're fictional, as if the people saying them are part of the real world and that they're referring to characters in a comic book or comic book movie. They never treat them as actual characters who also exist in their own world. It's more like how if you or I were to suddenly reference that character in the middle of a conversation.

This one looks great. Was she ever in Justice League Unlimited though? I don't recall her ever featuring. Only Shazam when he battled Superman.

I think this movie could cover some of the same ground as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

They were all teenagers in that film who became adult versions of themselves. However some became more kick ass versions while others ended up weaker than they were in real life.

I wonder if Black Adam ever met them, whether he'd make a comment about them being just a bunch of kids. Especially since Dwayne Johnson played in Jumanji.

Not in the cartoon, but she did start appearing in the JLU comic.
A few characters who hadn't been on the cartoon got figures in that toy line...
Random off topic rant.....

Well what are these 13 reasons why he has joined Shazam then?

I believe that was an attempt at humor, yes.

I can't wait to see how they universe-build this film or if we will see these Shazam Family heroes on a grander scale going forward

It's funny you mention that because I was just reading that Elvis Presley was apparently a huge fan of Captain Marvel Jr. (Freddy Freeman) and styled his hair and Vegas jumpsuit/cape after him (!?) And "King Shazam" is supposedly a nod to Elvis. The name does sound pretty good though.

But yeah they will probably just use their personal names. Or come up with something new for the movie?

Shazam Family are they gonna be like Teen Titans or something

OT:

is it just me or do her arms look too long, almost ape-like? Her hands seem to be almost down to her knees

We were just used to seeing it so it looked somewhat normalized, but the later Animated Series and JLU style guide and proportions got freakin ridiculous.

It was even more pronounced when translated to figure form.
The giant heads on the girls.
All the gorilla arms, and chicken legs.

When I first read the Freddy scene the first thing I also thought of was a reference to "The King" = Elvis.
But oddly Geoff Johns and Garry Frank are also the ones who turned Freddy into a blond with long hair. Completely abandoning any visual Elvis nod.
So not sure where they were coming from? I was not a fan of blond freddy.

I'm just really glad the movie cast didn't follow their blond Freddy look, and cast two that can look a bit like Elvis.

Hopefully in the movie either J.D. Grazer(young Freddy) or Adam Brody(adult Freddy) play up some Elvis reference or nod with their character and look.
And give us a scene with a lip twitch, hip swing, or when Freddy transforms, have the hairdo and strike a classic Elvis pose would be fantastic! :yay:

Freddy still needs to look like Elvis. In fact, make sure he has a side cape instead of the one draped down like Superman's cape which Billy now has.

Give him some rhinestones too!

Are Teen Titans orphans who shares a magic power that transform them to their idealized self?
Shazam Family are they gonna be like Teen Titans or something
In what way do you think?
Or are you only going by the most superficial understanding, cause they are teens?

Also Billy, Mary and Freddy already existed as a group before Teen Titans. Add the Lieutenants; Tall billy, Hill Billy, Fat Billy and Freckles, were also there before Titans.
