Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Part 1

Finally.

Sherlock Holmes: Infinity War

Who's Holmes ?

Were the first two any good? Think I only caught bits and pieces of the first one, on in the background at a buddy's house, only vaguely aware they even did a sequel.

The cast is pretty great, but I'm so 'meh' on Ritchie's more recent stuff.

I like the first one, I think it's pretty solid. Even though it's obviously quite different in style, it always reminded me of the tone and sense of adventure found in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean flicks, which I also enjoy.

The sequel doesn't really work IMO. Downey and Law still have perfect chemistry and Jared Harris is fantastic as Moriarty, but it kind of slogs on without really coming together for me. There is a scene near the end that I thought was pretty awesome however.

I am excited for where they might go with the next one though.

The first one is entertaining enough, but the second one is a giant waste of potential. They pretty much squandered Jared Harris as Moriarty.

Since Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes existed around the same time period, they could drop an Easter egg connecting to David Yates' The Legend of Tarzan movie. :woot:

I think I'm one of the few people who liked Jared Harris' Moriarty more than Andrew Scott's.

Jared Harris played it exactly as you'd imagine from the books. I never took to Andrew Scott, more Joker than Moriarty.

Scott's take really grew on me with repeat viewings. I remember hating him the first time I saw The Great Game, but then I thought he turned it around and absolutely crushed it in The Reichenbach Fall. The confrontation on the rooftop at the end of that episode is honestly one of the most thrilling scenes I've ever watched in a television show.

As far as the movies are concerned, Harris was genius casting and I enjoyed him in the role certainly. I just wish he had a better movie around him.

Bit of a ridiculous wait for this but I will see how it pans out. I actually liked the sequel and thought Jared Harris as Moriarty was great.

Maybe this could be a backdoor pilot to reboot League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Well I'm looking forward to this. Love the first film and I prefer Downey's Holmes to Cumberbatch's.

Andrew Scott acts exactly like John Simm as The Master on Doctor Who.

Exciting news, Downey was excellent in the role and his chemistry with Law was perfect.

The first one was excellent, but I weirdly remember absolutely nothing about the second movie.

It would be interesting if they said, that after faking his death,
Holmes went into a self imposed exile for nine years, traveling for much of that time.

Oh yeah - that movie ended with him faking his own death? Did he ever tell Watson, or was that just for the viewer to see?

I liked first two and I'm interested to see another one.

Watson kind of guessed it because of a package Holmes sent him but only the audience saw Holmes.

I think I’m one of the few people who didn’t like either. I found Harris boring as hell and Scott over-the-top. Scott’s Moriarty feels like an SNL impression of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

My friend didn't like Harris at all and thought he was too Hannibal Lecter-ish.

I actually liked whoever did the voice for Moriarty in the first RDJ Sherlock Holmes movie better than Harris. Hell, Blackwood was a better Moriarty than Harris.

Amen to both these posts. Scott was nails on a chalkboard for me. It was a weird performance for the sake of being weird. Not at all convincing for a crimelord.

And, yeah, the Moriarty voice in the shadows was scarier than Harris in the sequel.

(High-Five)

Yeah, I don't feel like either version really got Moriarty. Perhaps that's the fault of Arthur Conan Doyle, in a way. He built the character up as this amazing villain but he only appears in one (short) story and really only has a single conversation that we're privy to. I think that has led to actors and directors taking a lot of liberties with the character (Scott) or just making him stuff and boring (Harris).

My personal favorite version of the character was the one in (spoiler, sort of) Young Sherlock Holmes.

They are good action movies starring the Sherlock Holmes characters and set in the late 1800s. I enjoy them a lot, especially Robert Downey's performance.
