Should it still be called a racial slur?

I'm talking about the N-word.
As I always see it used as a form of hello now. With "what up my ******" being used all the time. Heck I'm a white guy and a black guy said that to me awhile back.

So really is it still a slur if its used so casual now?

For white people it is still a slur:o

****** and ***** are two 'different" words.

Yes its amazing how if you change the last 2 letters of that word, how offensive it becomes. But honestly, the younger generation doesn't care if you call them that, its the people 50 and over that do. If you call someone that over 50, prepare for well done ass whoopin.

It's still a racial slur, depending on whether it ends with "a" or "er," and the context it's used in. I've pretty much given up on being offended when Filipino-Americans say it. I don't say it, myself. I don't buy the whole "using it affectionately robs it of its power" thing, especially since we still take offense when white people try to say it in the same inoffensive context.

They try too hard is the problem.

I totally want to put up that clip of the news report about that white teacher who tried to say it to a student, but I've already gotten a probationary ban for posting a clip from The Boondocks.

Yeah, this place is like a day care now.

How come i can get called a whitie, cracker, honkie and various other names. But i can't say one damn word?

It's okay, snowflake. You could try insulting them on a personal level by pointing out one of their shortcomings.

Because whitie, cracker, or honkie isn't that offensive I guess. I can never take someone serious when they say that to me as they just sound silly. Whoever came up with those wasn't really trying.

Are you saying blacks don't try?
When it comes to insults yes. At least when they use those words they aren't trying. Most I know who say cracker use it as a joke as it just sounds stupid. When they usually insult they come up with something orginal.
well my thread went the wrong direction fast.

Im just saying, though those names arent as offensive, its such a double standard.

This direction I guess covers multiple angles...but to answer your question again, it should totally not be taken off the racial slur list ever.

And it would be pretty weird to find someone white or black who'd say otherwise in my opinion.

Just listen to it.

People young and old, black, white or yellow would agree I feel.

It's true. I used to joke around with a white co-worker all the time by calling him a honky and cracka-ass-cracka. Whoever uses those as real insults aren't trying.

Yes, filipinos tend to try to be cool no matter how many times you tell them not to say that. I almost had a whoop 4-5 of them at once even though they clearly weren't trying to offend me but......I just didn't like how they said the word. I've tried to turn their words back on them like "pinoy please" or "what up pinoy" but they clearly like to call themselves the n word and are intent of trying to be cool with black guys and say it even though they can't say it right for the life of them........which very well maybe the case if they say it to the wrong guy.......especially if the guy has his child support payments increased. :o

"Pinoy" and "Pinay" are words that describe Filipinos completely inoffensively. I managed to get one of my friends to stop saying the n-word when I kept saying "Flip please," though.

Now all of a sudden I feel like turning this thread to what can we call white people. As we don't really have a word that bothers us. I'd like to make everything equal here.

I just want people to focus on the fact that most of those entries seem to point out the idea that no white person is offended by this term.

Does anyone get offended when it's used by someone who isn't black, but not white? I notice sometimes latinos may use it around blacks yet they won't get upset about it.
