Should it still be called a racial slur?

But what people don't seem to get is that words mean only as much as you LET THEM mean. I don't get offended when someone calls me ugly, because what is "ugly"? A series of noises that came out of someone's mouth that are just used to indicate a definition that we have come to accept.
well, yeah, ideally we shouldnt get so up in arms about a *****ebag slinging insults. but thats not the reality we face. and regardless, it still wouldnt make the usage of the word acceptable, in my opinion.

Yeah I mea, I don't really use the word, and I don't care for when others do. I never get offended, I just think it signifies a lack of intelligence and bigotry, neither of which are qualities I like in people. :p

I dont even care if I get called racist for this because nowadays, everything a white person says about a black is racist...but here we go...the n-word shouldnt easily offend so many people today. It pisses me off that black people can get off with ANYTHING. They can say ANYTHING they want to a white person without it even being remotely racist. While white people can't say **** to a black person without it being racist. The n-word shouldnt offend every single motherbeeping black person on the planet, when they use the very same word every single day. The word should only offend people that were affected by the racist mindsets that white people had a few decades ago. Today black people still act like they need to "overcome" the racism that still supposedly goes on today. When in reality, they have just as many chances as any one else does. I do not consider myself racist, and I even have many black friends, but black people should be much more desensitized to "racism" when in reality, they are imagining racism.

How come i can get called a whitie, cracker, honkie and various other names. But i can't say one damn word?

AND they are more fun to say. Honky, reminds me of George Jefferson.

Remember.....this thread is for serious discussion....it is NOT an excuse to recount all the lame jokes you know using the word.

I use the word all the time. As a substitute for dude or man.

Honestly, I use the N word often. I'm not racist at all, and have tons of black friends. But it's a word I use often, and a little too casually. I need to be a little careful whenever I use it.

Yeah, that's mostly just me. I'll stop.

No, nevermind. I'll just stop.

Racist.

No, seriously. You're probably not racist. You are bitter, though. You can't just turn a blind eye to racism and say that black people are always imagining it. Yes, okay, there are a few people that do imagine racism where there is none. However, that doesn't mean real racism doesn't still happen. The incident in Jena, Louisiana wasn't that long ago, and that was just a highly publicized instance of race relations deteriorating.

Oh, and by the way, not every black person uses the n-word. Like I said earlier, I don't use it. Even when I follow along rap songs and quote the movie Blazing Saddles (which is one of the funniest movies of all time, by the way), I tend to skip it. The word actually makes me uncomfortable to say. So, yeah, I'm gonna get uncomfortable when I hear it outside of a comedic or artistic context. Yes, even when I hear other black people say it. Nobody in my family raised me to use that word.

i think black people tend to think theres more racism in the world than there really is. and i think white people tend to think theres less racism than there really is.

I agree. I don't use the N-word and know just as more black people who don't use it than do. Its especially not used as much by black people over 30. I find the word uncomfortable and have never felt the need to use it nor would I want too.

The people who complain 'well some black people use it, its unfair why can't we?'

Why would you want to?

What social context do you feel the need to use it other than its a powerful word in most peoples eyes and you just want to say it because its either controversial, to get one over people who say you can't say it or just because you think its cool.

I've said this before, but ever since that skit there are actually some white people who think that they can say the word because they think they know the difference.

I have actually heard a white person say the word and then say after it "I'm not talking about all black people". As if that's suppose to make it better.

Cos your granddaddy was never told to get to the back of the bus or get out of the school or go back in the field you damn honky. That's why.

Regardless, the N-word is going to be obsolete as a slur in a generation or two anyways, however we have to bear in mind that there are still people alive who suffered from the racism and still remember what it was like before.

I never EVER use the word because I know people get pissed about it. I'm not a black person though so I did sound a little too sure of myself when I said that there was not that much racism. People do imagine it a hellofa lot more than really happens though. I respect black people though, and have many friends that are black.

Does anyone get offended when it's used by someone who isn't black, but not white? I notice sometimes latinos may use it around blacks yet they won't get upset about it.

I don't get offended by this word anymore, but I still don't like it. I've never liked double standards, even if they work for "our" people. I had a roomate in college who was white, obsessed with rap, and sung along saying whatever lyrics they were, N-word or otherwise. He never cared to consider whether or not that pissed me off, a white guy using "my  word", but thankfully, it didn't make a difference to me.

The meaning, to me, is the exact same. You can use the word in a different context, but its still the same word. I'll go up to you and I'll say "What up, dumbass" because from my mouth, dumbass means friend...see, that doesn't work. Its kinda like the B-word for women, how they can call themselved b***h, but us guys dare not call a woman that. Cause gals can and will call each other that, and it apparanetly means something else than when I call a woman one...yeah, right. I'm still trying to figure that one out...

I just want the word to have one purpose. Either its bad for everyone to say, including black people using the word, or everyone can use it.

Call me a ***** and see if you don't get your wig split, ya feel me?

:cmad:

No matter what race they are huh?

In my current state, yeah. But dudes still say it regardless, if I don't know them. You know we call everybody *****.

Only if they're begging me for money or do/say something ignorant.

I think there are worse things, being called an uncle tom is a million times worse.

It's quite sad how black people have taken to cutting themselves down and closing other opportunities for others

when you're up, you forget those behind you that have helped, when you're down, you spite those above you for not helping you out. It's a dangerous cycle.

There's far too much individualism, not enough community orientated shared goals of development and economic evolution.

Where did the N word come from? Did the white slave masters just sit there one day and think "Ohh I know a word to insult black people! ******!". How was the word devised and used as an insult? And what about negro? Is that a insult?

i think negro in spanish means black, as in the colour..

it probably is derived from some latin word, i'm sure wikipedia would be the easiest source of finding out

I always wanted to know when and how we ended up using the word as it is now. What ignorant ass decided "you know what, I'm gonna use this word in a good way. As a way to greet my follow black man"

It probably occurred in the similar way that gay started off and has now evolved with meaning since it was used in association in a derogatory term

But then then the homosexual society embraced it instead of denoucing it and now calling a gay person gay is.....no real issue.

Latinos and blacks are basically fingers on the same hand. Historically, we've all been oppressed by the man. Hard to explain but if a latino(a)called me the n word, it doesn't bother me, never has really. But if a white co-worker called me that, hello lawsuit!

Ridiculous. As a Hispanic, we're probably the most racist racial group out there.
