It's no secret that movie games usually suck. With a few exceptions (Wolverine), movie games have been torn apart in ratings. Here's my question: Should they stop being made altogether? The Dark Knight never had a tie-in game (even though there was one in development, but never happened), and Batman: Arkham Asylum went on to become what many consider one of the best superhero games of all time. Instead of movie games, should companies make games based off of the comics directly, without there being any hassle to get the game done in time for a film's release date?

They should, but they are easy money sadly. EA did try to make Dark Knight game into something fantastic, but door handling over the direction caused them to lose alot of money instead. :/

No. They should do what they did with the Wolverine game & start the game before the movie goes into production. The levels revolving around the movies plot can be added in last.

Yea i agree.

More games like that or the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay would be welcome.

Should movie tie-in games stop being made?......no,

Should movie tie-in games stop being made by SEGA?......absolutely

No. theres nothing wrong necesariyl with movie tie in games. Its the sh-tty developers that make the games. I think what needs to happen is a change in approach to how they are made

They should stop making movie tie-ins that are just soulless rehashes of the movie. In other words, the game should be able to stand on its own independently of the movie.

I'll use Chris Nolan's Batman 3 as an example. Obviously Warner will want a game to go along with it. Hopefully they're smart enough to realize that they don't have to make a game that looks like the movie. They don't have to wrangle some of the cast to do voiceovers. Batman doesn't have to look like Christian Bale.

If they're smart, they'll trust in Rocksteady to do what they do best and deliver another solid Batman game that can be released alongside of Nolan's film, but stand on its own merits without being a slave to look, feel, and plot of the movie.

And that's how it should be for all movie tie-ins.

It's not the developers fault. I've explained this before, but these developers work their asses off on these games. All they usually have to base their games on is some concept art and a synopsis of the movie. Combine that with the fact that they usually have to make these games with small budgets, smaller teams, and not a whole lot of time. It's kind of a miracle that games even work when they're released.

you are right. A good part of the problem is also the publishers which need to meet a deadline. Cant have a movie tie in come out months after the movie for obvious reasons, so they force developers to turn in subpar and soemtimes incomplete titles so they can release them on schedule, whereas if that were another title, they'd likely delay it. But you have to admit, some of it is the developers fault. Alot od publishers dont have their A or B studios working on these games. They outsource them to lesser known studios with not as much experience to push them out.

Games that tie-in with the movies in terms of story and plot should stop.

But I'm fine if something like Arkham Asylum came out during The Dark Knight period. Thats in fact a good thing.

Arkham Asylum is not a movie in tie in and therefore wouldnt count for what this thread is asking. AA was a completely different thing

But if theres Captain America movie coming up... logically all the game studios will be wanting to make a Cap game to ride the hype for the Cap movie.

But they should make the game in such a way that you can appreciate it even if you havent watched the movie.

well that was the case with the Wolverine game from last year. It was a Wolverine game before they tied it to the movie laterin the development cycle. It was the best Wolverine game ever made and one of the better movie based games

The Spiderman 2 tie in game is absolutely amazing.

So No, Keep Them.

You know...I honestly didn't mind Batman Begins (Xbox) either, it wasn't AMAZING but I thought it was a pretty decent game.

Yet, I haven't played a GOOD movie tie in since that and Spider-Man 2....so...I'm going to have to vote yes.

Batman Begins was entertaining

i thought Spiderman 3 was awesome though! had lots fun with that one

You MIGHT be the only person I've ever seen that said they enjoyed the Spidey 3 game, lol.

Yes, people groan at the counter when they see a preview for a movie tie-in game at Gamestop.

I played a mod a few years back called Third Age: Total War. It was a modification of Medieval Total War 2 and actually better than Battle For Middle Earth which was the officially licensed game. The officially licensed game was pretty much just a C@C type game with very little scale, about as typical as RTS as you can get. Third Age: Total War because it was a modified Total War game, had a rather extensive turn based story map as well as real time battles that could support hundreds of units at once, much larger in scale and closer to the scenes in the movie. I think it is perhaps people just banging a game out like a hamburger at burger king as sloppy means of extra profit. Not that Battle For Middle earth was a outright terrible game, it was just as derivative as you can get, squandering what made the actual movie battle scenes good, scale.

Wolverine was a great game.

I love Spider-Man 3, King Kong, Riddick was good, Spider-Man 2 was good, Golden Eye was great along with many others.

Sega isn't the problem at all, I'm assuming this is due to the Iron Man games, any studio making those games would've made them just as bad they would've been made on the cheap for a quick profit

Arkham Asylum came out a year ago, over a year after The Dark Knight hit theaters, how was this released during the Dark Knight period?

The Cap movie will be the same as the majority of movie tie-in games, a piece of crap because it'll be made on the cheap as a quick cash grab.

Goldeneye came out about 2 years after the movie, therefore doesn't count. It used a liscense, but it was far from a quick cash grab game. Riddick also wasn't really tied to the movie in any way. King Kong was good, but pretty damn generic. Spider-Man 2 was only good for the free roam webslinging, missions and fighting were very generic.

How are you defining movie tie in? The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay released at the same time as the Chronicles of Riddick. That wasnt in any way a coincidence.

Riddick is a unique case, yes it was released at the same time as the movie, but didn't really have anything to do with the movie. It'd be like if Arkham Asylum was released July '08 instead of August '09, a Batman game yes, was released at the same time as the movie, sure. However, has nothing to do with the movie other than using the same character.

No. Companies have a right to make games based off a movie license (or anything else in fact). What needs to happen is people stop buying the bad ones.
