the problem with the Mystery arch is having to keep up with that kinda style in the next season and so on... so if this is something there expecting to last for years (not just one season) where do you go from there, you have come up with some new mystery every season
though, I do find this style of story telling intriguing, at first, it kinda gets old fast... an I don't find these types of shows to do well in re-runs, either
(it's not something you can really watch and watch again, once you know the answer to the mystery, it's kinda become tedious to watch again)
I enjoy shows where each episode is more or less, stand alone, where it doesn't matter what order you watch them in, or if you miss an episode you wont be totally lost on whats going on...
The Flash has created a nice blend of both episodic and serialized. They can have an overarching story but still make each episode stand on its own weight. If they show is completely dependent on people having been watching the entire time, it makes it harder for fans to hop on board.
If Supergirl can take a similar route as the Flash, I think things will be fine and it will turn out better for everyone watching. If there was no story outside of her doing super things, it can get boring really fast.
My thoughts on the Dean Cain/Helen Slater legacy casting:
