Supergirl Should Supergirl have an overarching mystery like the Flash?

the problem with the Mystery arch is having to keep up with that kinda style in the next season and so on... so if this is something there expecting to last for years (not just one season) where do you go from there, you have come up with some new mystery every season

though, I do find this style of story telling intriguing, at first, it kinda gets old fast... an I don't find these types of shows to do well in re-runs, either
(it's not something you can really watch and watch again, once you know the answer to the mystery, it's kinda become tedious to watch again)

I enjoy shows where each episode is more or less, stand alone, where it doesn't matter what order you watch them in, or if you miss an episode you wont be totally lost on whats going on...

The Flash has created a nice blend of both episodic and serialized. They can have an overarching story but still make each episode stand on its own weight. If they show is completely dependent on people having been watching the entire time, it makes it harder for fans to hop on board.

If Supergirl can take a similar route as the Flash, I think things will be fine and it will turn out better for everyone watching. If there was no story outside of her doing super things, it can get boring really fast.

My thoughts on the Dean Cain/Helen Slater legacy casting:

^ Supergirl will be set in the "Flarrow"-verse. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point.

Direct crossovers may not ever happen or may not happen for a while, but the 3 shows will share a universe.

*sigh* A mistake. Do they really expect me to believe that Superman has been running around this whole time and not once has anyone ever mentioned him?

It's a 50/50 chance at this point, it has never been 100% confirmed.

It's all-but-confirmed. Numerous people have said that the possibility for crossover exists, and we had THR make the statement that they were told that Berlanti has it in his Supergirl contract that he can do crossovers at some point. Plus, you have Kreisberg officially joining the show's production and writing staff, and other crew from Arrow and Flash working on the series as well.

At this point, it will be extremely surprising if the 3 shows - Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl - aren't connected universe-wise.

how ?the shows in question are on rival networks ?

The CW and CBS aren't rival networks; they're sister networks (The CW is co-owned by CBS).

That relationship allows for a greater likelihood of some, limited cooperation. But CBS and CW are still rivals. E.g., if Supergirl receives a big ratings bump by crossing over to The Flash, then whatever CW has on opposite Supergirl suffers (and could be in danger of cancellation). And ultimately, CW’s first allegiance is to its own shows.

I think the overarching theme for Kara will be getting used to Earth but I'd imagine there'd be a shadowy organization going against her, either Checkmate, Cadmus or something like that. What if Lex Luthor is in it and tries to use her like he did in the 90s?

This is not as big of an issue as you're trying to make it out to be, especially if Supergirl were to air as the 'anchor' in the 11/10 C timeslot on whatever night it ends up on.

Even if this were a big concern, however, the conversation isn't about direct crossover at this point, but rather the shows sharing a universe, which is possible because of Berlanti's involvement in all 3 series and The CW and CBS being sister networks.

It could go either way. It is up to CBS to allow the cross over which they aren't sure if it is something that they want. They practically said that they haven't ruled it out but it wont be happening anytime soon. If they are going to share the same universe long distance, then they will have to explain why Arrow/Flash havent heard of any talks about aliens being on earth or people with super powers being a big deal. But we'll see in about 6 months.

CW president Mark Pedowitz said he was open to a cohesive universe between the three and Berlanti said that in putting himself in the mind of a viewer that he would want to see that. Adding, "But we have to get so many things right to make a good show and so much of it is luck, unfortunately."

At today's TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, Presdent of CBS Nina Tassler seemed less inclined to join forces with the already-existing series. "Well, those two shows [The Flash and Arrow] are on a different network," Tassler said. "So I think we'll keep Supergirl to ourselves for awhile."

Oh, I agree with that part. Indeed, I expect that all 3 shows will now more freely indulge in allusions/easter eggs re: a broader, mutually shared universe. In this way, the door to possible crossovers is left open - without necessarily committing to them.

Arrow's mystery was "Who's the Dark Archer" but it was solved mid season. I think Alex will turn into an enemy but that will probably take a couple seasons. Judging on the character description on Jimmy when Brooks was cast, it seems "What is Jimmy really doing in National City?" will be the mystery.
Arrow also had the mystery of what the Undertaking was.
