So they say.

And I didn't say that it was going to suck, I just don't have faith that it's going to be as good as I thought it would be.

They're seriously gonna think an acclaimed academy award winning director's and big actor's movie is gonna suck so they move it? The release date was up with zombieland and other stuff coming out in the same month. They want to make the most money possible. Though releasing it in the same month as the Wolfman is odd. But look at Valkrie. It got moved more times and it was a great film.

It happens.

The Soloist was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Joe Wright (Atonement) and starred goldenboy Robert Downey, Jr. and Academy-Award winner Jamie Foxx. It looked like pure Oscar-bait gold, right down to its fall 2008 release date. Then, the thing kept getting moved, right out of Oscar season.

The movie eventually landed in April. It underperformed with audiences and critics. The studio was probably right to move the thing.

I'm not saying that's what is happening with Shutter Island. I think it looks fantastic. I've loved every film adaptation of Denis Lehane's work, and Martin Scorsese seems to have brought his a-game. The move may be only for financial reasons.

But, I've seen a lot of good-looking movies get dumped into the next year because they're just not up to Oscar snuff.

I'm still excited for the movie, but I'm more wary of it now than I was previously.

I adore almost all of DiCaprio's movies, so I'll still give this a try.

It doesn't have to be Oscar bait, Can't it simply be great film. And those were different movies anyway. This is effing Scorsese.

I love Scorsese as much as the next guy. But he's not infallible.

Man, it sucks that this movie got moved to next year. I was really looking forward to it and still am, but man....

the funny thing is that the trailer with the original release date is still showing these days in the theaters I go to.....:o:woot:

if you let the move of a release date alter your personal opinion of the movie, then waiting a couple extra months are the least of your problems
It's release date altered my anticipation for the movie and my anticipation only. I've never said that the movie isn't great because I haven't seen it yet. Seesh.

You are acting like I am saying that the movie isn't good and I simply am not saying that because I haven't seen it yet.

How does my lack of anticipation hurt you anyhow?

I'm not really sure that the reason they gave for release date change really holds water. Sure, the economy is crap right now, but it hasn't stopped people from packing into theaters, even when they're showing garbage (Transformers 2, GI Joe). Granted, this movie doesn't have "blockbuster" written all over it, but it certainly looks like it will turn a profit with the talent involved.

Im probably going to read the book first....Im wondering why, if this place is keeping secrets, someone called the Federal Marshall service in the first place?

I'll see the film first then read the book.

This looks like a Di Caprio and Scorse reunion after Departed and the movie looks amazing! Oh so there's a book to this, should I read it before watching this film?

Same here. I would rather be surprised/shocked while watching the film for the first time then know about most of it from the novel.

Yup. If there is some twist or reveltion, I'd rather see it done on film. But in a book, it would be annoying reading page after page knowing what will happen.

wow....way to minimalize actually reading a book....books can be just as suspenseful as a film if they are good enough

This is what my friend had to say about the movie.

"i saw a test screening of this and thought it was dreadful. i'm a fan of scorsese, too. i definitely thought it was kind of strange that a scorsese movie was being tested to begin with. it's painfully obvious that he's just trying to film a book, and not adapt it for another medium. one of the most poorly-paced films i've ever seen."

We get into these test screenings all the time, but I missed out on this one. I'm still excited to see it though. Sorry, I have no physical proof that he saw it so you got to take my word for it. But you can ask anyone who knows me on this board that I'm not dishonest.

Well I don't know your friend or his tastes so for all we know it might have just been a case of, 'it wasn't his kind of thing'.
Does he tend to like these kinds of films?

I would think he does. He usually likes most of the movies I do. But honestly, he really didn't complain too much about the actual story and he thought the direction was excellent. He just had major issues with pacing and felt it was faithful to a fault. He's a fan of the book but for some reason he felt it translated poorly to film. I'm still pissed I missed out on this one.

Just to add:

The film tested highly, in the high 80’s/low 90’s and even Scorsese brought the running time down to under 2 hours.

According to /Film it tested high.
