Just the items one might need to become a real superhero.

Huh... I gotta admit, I wouldn't have expected this kind of thread on Superherohype...

Is it just me or does the whole idea of rallying against someone who is putting on a costume and actively trying to help people seem kind of... hypocritcal from a Superhero fan? I mean surely by that logic, you should hate Superman cause he puts his adoptive parents in danger by becoming a superhero.

How long have you been here again? :oldrazz:

:hehe:

I guess I just don't expect Superhero fans to hate anyone who would even think of doing anything of the sort... but how silly of me!

Are you kidding me? Liking something in fiction and liking something in real life are two completely different things. For example, I think the Joker in 'Dark Knight' is really cool. But if someone was really going around in disfigured clown make-up blowing up hospitals and cruise-liners.... no, not so cool.

Real life superheroes have no idea how selfish the ideal is. You're neglecting your spouses and children to persue some selfish dream that could get you killed, or your loved ones hurt if some gang you pissed off decided to id you.

For the sake of your loved ones I wish to become Bane in real life. Does anyone have any suggestions?

And how do you know that most of them have spouses and children? Chances are that if they are dressing up like a superhero for real, which I have heard of these people, they PROBABLY don't have too much else going on in their lives.

And as for a suggestion...do this thing called ignore it and move on with your life. :oldrazz:

'Liking' a villain means thinking they are convincingly scary, threatening and dangerous... to the world and the hero.

It's an entirely different kind of appreciation. Unless your actually rooting for him to win and think of him as the main character, the hero of the peice... it's simply not the same thing.

When you 'like' a hero, you like what they do, and what they stand for.

So I just don't see how you can put someone down for trying to do something similar.

It's like your basically saying 'I love superheroes... but what they do is technically selfish and wrong'... which I just think is a bit hypcritcal as I said.

Become a big time newspaperman, go J. Jonah Jameson on their asses.

Damn. I actually like the fact that they are doing what they are doing. Its an interesting social experiment to watch play out IMO. Its something many have thought about doing. I find it interesting that so many are actually acting it out now.

Agreed.

Personally I think it's bloody brilliant.

I mean, I'm not saying what any of them are doing is making much of a difference, or that it's a smart idea to do it in the long run.

But the fact that people are so inspired by fictional stories of heroes, and so desperate to do more for other people that they are actually going out and TRYING to help, is to me bloody brilliant.

The more people in the world like that the better IMO. I'm sick of people just watching the stuff that goes on in the world and occasionally moaning about it.

I hope it keeps growing and spreading to other cities. I wanna see how this plays out.

This is an expression of the societal unconsciousness. Its Myth in action if you ask me. Its minor, but its a start.

Cops are NOT "good guys". They are people, no different than you or me, just with more authority. Government "sentinels" is more accurate. I find it naive to think otherwise.

Is it dangerous? Sure. Are they a little off their rocker? Probably. I find it fascinating though that some are using modern Myths as inspiration to take charge of their own neighborhoods and communities.

I support Anonymous also as a different manifestation of this same theme.

What gives them the right to go out and do this on their own?

What gives them the right to go out and do this on their own?

So they have to form a super group for it to be ok? What gives anyone the right to do anything that they do?

Not sure I understand your objection.

What gives them the right to go out and do this on their own?

Why on earth should they not have the right?

Why should we not have the right to dress any way we please? And why should we not have the right, while dressed that way, to approach a fight or someone breaking the law, and try to stop it?

We live in a world where more and more often, the police just don't handle situations, or even respond in some cases.

In my town in England, a group of religious people have started coming out on a saturday night outside of clubs, armed with flip flops, bottles of water and aiming to talk to people that need help.

It's dangerous, it opens them up to a lot of ridicule and abuse. But as anti religion as I am, I'm always happy to see anyone trying to improve society, improve the world around them.

Anyone who can condem someone as selfish for dressing up and trying to stop crimes is missing the point entirely.

It's your average joe (me included) who do nothing. We're the selfish ones. We're too ashamed, self conscious, would think it was silly. We see the world's problems and think it's awful, but don't see it as 'our problem' because how could little old me possibly make a difference.

Well here we have a bunch of people who think maybe they CAN make a difference, and so that's what they are trying to do.

That's wonderful!

I just lament the absence of super villains so far. Yea, we have Goldman-Sachs, Politicians, and such but they are above these guys paygrade. They need some street level villains with homemade death rays.

:o

I've always liked these "superheroes" too, though I find them amusing more than anything. I like your social experiment take, though.

As I see it, they're adults, they know the risks of what they're doing, they're likely only going to hurt themselves, so let them dress up in costume and fight crime if they want.

Patience. All in good time.

It's that old adage about how Batman creates more villains than he stops. It's always gonna attract somebody even nuttier than the ones trying to be heroes, which would be villains.
