SIDEKICK UPDATE TIME...

First of all, some VERY BIG NEWS (especially for those who have followed Sidekick's progress in this forum)...

SIDEKICK's screenplay was recently purchased by Focus Features (Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Broken Flowers), the specialty arm of Universal Pictures. They plan on producing a big budget remake in the near future. Crazy, huh? So you should definitely come out and see the original movie while you still can...

which brings me to announcement number two...

Hot off the heels of our super successful SOLD OUT Fundraiser Preview Screening, I'm proud to announce two (that’s right TWO!) additional preview screenings of our independent, awe-inspiring, superhero-comedy, SIDEKICK, here in Toronto. I'd love for some Superhero Hype! folks to be on hand.

SIDEKICK will be playing at the 2006 San Francisco Independent Film Festival in 2 weeks time. It will be the World Premiere screening of our new 35mm print.

In case you're wondering, our screenings at the Calgary and Idaho Int'l Film Fests were all huge successes. Audiences loved the movie - laughing, cheering, the whole works. And we also won the "Overall / Audience Choice Award" at the Eureka Springs Film Festival in November.

SIDEKICK is a superhero movie made by real fans for the real fans. It's dark, cook, funny and it's full of "awe" - which is in my opinion the single most important emotion a superhero movie should evoke in its viewers.

Are you looking at a theatrical release or a DVD release?

Are Focus Features going to remake the film and that is the one that will be released, like El Mariachi?

We're looking at a theatrical release in Canada for sure so far. Depending on our box office up here and how well we do at US/International festivals - which has been pretty darn well so far - an American release may be in the cards. I'm sure hoping so. Otherwise, definitely DVD - we've had quite a few inquiries from interested video distributors. I just want the opportunity to prove to people that Sidekick is theatre worthy first.

And I use your El Mariachi-Desperado comparison all the time. Originally, Paramount didn't have any plans to release Mariachi - they just wanted to remake it - but then it did well at festivals so they gave it a small theatrical release. When they made Desperado, which was a sequel, they didn't promote it as a sequel, but anyone who saw Mariachi knew it was. I'm hoping if we do well at fests Focus might consider doing the same with Sidekick. But in the end, if they just remake it, then that's cool, too. It's a great story that people should see no matter what.

Yeah, it was with Chuck Norris and Johnathan Brandis (sp?) and the kid had asthma but like idolized Chuck norris and would always daydream about a series of adventures with chuck, a lot of karate and war movies and stuff. And he starts doing Karate and goes to the finals where his master for the master-partner kung fu tournament either doesn't get there or is disqualified or something, and he gets Chuck Norris (a spectator at the event) to help Brandis kick some ass.




Yeah it sucked and it was one of my little bros favorite movies. Im pretty sure i saw it like 8 times.

BIG NEWS: SIDEKICK TO GET CANADIAN RELEASE!

This Saturday (April 1st), Canada's very own superhero movie, SIDEKICK, embarks on a month long journey across Canada, screening in theatres in 8 Canadian cities, literally from coast to coast.

And what better way to kick off a cross country adventure than with a trophy...

That's right, last weekend, SIDEKICK celebrated its Opening Night Gala Film status at the 2006 Canadian Filmmakers Festival by not only selling out its screening (and at the Varsity!), but by also walking away with the "People's Pick for Best Flick" Award. How cool is that?

And not only that, but SIDEKICK was featured in articles/segments on Rogers' Reel to Reel, SPACE Channel, EYE Magazine and the National Post. And over the next few weeks you're going to see additional features in/on the Toronto Sun, Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, National Post (again), City TV, CTV, Global and the list goes on and on.

If you're an Indie filmmaker and/or you love superhero movies and you live in or near Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary or Vancouver, please come out and see/support SIDEKICK when it rolls through town in April. i like all the names you came up with the aliasman200, especially Dr. Hype, but we went with something a little more realistic. although the plot doesn't resemble unbreakable in the least, the world it takes place in is similar.

SIDEKICK is not a studio-movie-made-by-committee-for-11-year-old-boys-with-video-game-and-fast-food-chain-tie-in. it's an independent superhero movie made by people who love the genre and wanted to tell their own story. it's dark. it's funny. people really dig it.

1-You mention "Unbreakable". In that movie, the villain had the supervillain name "Mr. Glass". And David Dunn was "The Unbreakable".

2-Who says a dark, gritty movie can't have superhero and supervillain names? What about Batman and Batman Begins? What about The Shadow? What about The Authority or The Watchmen?

3-The origin of this guy reminds me of the origin of Shego from "Kim Possible":

a person with superpowers that had a mean streak that was trained to be a superhero/heroine, but was seduced by villainy and decied to become a supervillain.

And guess what? "Shego" is her supervillain name (which was originally her superheroine name). Throught the series, we never find out her REAL name.

4-And what is the good guy's power anyway? Is he indestructable like Bruce Willis, or does he have super strength?

5-And does the bad guy has an evil plan, or will he just go around wreaking havoc?

holy questions. i won't answer most of them because it would give too much away, but dude, i never meant to claim the words "dark" and "gritty" as my own personal adjectives. i realize that there are other dark and gritty superhero movies.

when i compared it to unbreakable, all i meant is that the world sidekick takes place in is a more realistic world than say gotham or metropolis. philly is just philly in unbreakable. sidekick actually takes place in my home town, toronto. and toronto is just toronto.

and i know that there have been other origin stories similar to sidekick. almost every angle of origin story has been done. a character in my movie actually says, "It's not cliche, it's formula." sidekick follows the formula and it works because of it.

if you get the chance, come see it. superhero movie fans have, for the most part, really liked what we tried to do.

Any plans to bring it to Philly? I was kinda pissed when I got my Philadelphia Film Fest pack and saw that it wasn't in there. I'd like to see the original, if I can, before I'm exposed to the Focus Features version.

It's been a while, I know, but holy crap have I ever been busy. Not sure if you all remember, but in late March I told you I was about to embark on a month-long, cross Canada tour with SIDEKICK, screening my movie in 8 cities, literally from coast-to-coast. It was a lot of work, but by golly it worked. Not only did SIDEKICK get great turn-outs. Not only did the audiences (in my observation) dig it. But the media coverage was intense. National and local TV, radio and newspapers covered our story like mad. And I even got a good review for SIDEKICK from Aint-it-Cool-News!! It's on our website at www.sidekickmovie.com.

And since the movie went over so well in Vancouver, we've been invited back for another 1 night only screening next week. Here's the details:
