Silver Surfer: probably not gonna happen!

http://www.beyondhollywood.com/straczynski-talks-silver-surfer-it-probably-aint-gonna-happen/

I like J Michael Straczynski. Seriously, it’s ridiculous, and borders on being a man crush. I saw every episode of the guy’s Babylon 5 TV show, despite the fact that my local area kept showing it in syndication at around 3:00 in the morning. Luckily, I was pulling down a second shift job at the time, and was always able to catch every new episode. So yes, while I’m happy that ol Mikey has gone on to write everything from Clint Eastwood’s “The Changeling” to the proposed “Silver Surfer” movie, the very idea of seeing more of the Fantastic Four “universe” leaves me, shall we say, shaking in my boots. By which I mean, I don’t think I can stomach another FF movie, much less a lesser spin-off. Can you imagine being lesser to the two “Fantastic Four” movies? The horror, the horror…

But hey, maybe J Michael Straczynski has a take on the Surfer that would improve upon his FF appearance. Of course, the first thing they need to do is get rid of Laurence Fishburne’s voice. Seriously, whoever came up with the idea of putting Morpheus’ voice in the Surfer needs to get tarred and feathered, and then run over with a car.

Here’s what The J-ster said to AMC’s Sci Fi Blog about his Silver Surfer script, and the possibility (not looking very good) of it ever getting made:

Q: Did your work on Silver Surfer: Requiem comic bring about the offer to write the Silver Surfer movie?

A: It was one of those weird synchronicities. Whether or not it ever gets made I don’t know because they were kind of disappointed in how Fantastic Four 2 did. And given how this will be a subset of FF2 in terms of the marketing strategy, I think there is hesitation there about putting it forward. The script is pretty good, I like it, but whether or not it goes into production, I have no idea.

Q: Does this pick up where Silver Surfer left off in Fantastic Four 2?

A: I was writing it as FF2 was about to come out, and the theory was for it to pick up literally the next frame after the FF2 movie, where you find out why Silver Surfer was there and what happened to him. We would have seen Galactus, his home world, what happened and him trying to get back there, because now that he’s betrayed Galactus, he’s concerned his home world might be in jeopardy.

Q: When do you mean when you say,”We see Galactus”?

A: In the script I come up with some ways to visualize him that are true to the original, but take it one step further using the current CGI technology that we have. So we would have seen him as a character on numerous occasions in the second movie, not inconsistent with the first distant shot of him in that that’s just a way of concealing who and what he really is. Believe me, he would be not at all silly looking.
I’m sure Straczynski would have found a way to make Galactus believable, but does it matter? FF2 was Godawful, even by the lowly standards of comic book movie sequels. Straczynski should take the money they paid him for the Surfer script and try to get another Babylon 5 movie made. Now that’s something I’d pay to see.

I think a third FF is the better move... but they should wait a few years for people to get the bad stigma from the previous two out of their heads. Let Alba mature a bit more. They may have to recast a hero or two but I think it's stupid if Fox just ditches the rights. I think the franchise still has sellable material. A Silver Surfer film would be awesome though it probably won't sell. Maybe WAY down the line they'll come back to it.

I hope it isn't made, because if it is then that means the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer will remain in FOX's greasy grip...

These are movies Marvel should have a chance of doing.

Silver Surfer definitely needs a studio that isn't about making superhero adaptations into ditsy summer spectacles. It needs to be visually epic and a studio that is willing to financially back its costs.

Script writer Straczynski and the rumored director, Alex Proyas, sounds very promising. I just wish the production studio wasn't Fox, because Silver Surfer has to be a character driven movie, not cheap action.

Agreed!

So Fox are hesitating moving forward with the FF franchise? Good. Hopefully Marvel can convince them to cut their loses and give them the rights back.:o

They could work out something kind of deal similar to Incredible Hulk where Universal handled the promotion/distribution with Marvel Studios in complete control of creative decisions. IMO that's one thing that Fox excels in where superhero movies are concerned.

If the script is as good Straczynski says it is they shouldn't have a problem getting a good director on board.

I can imagine a great Surfer movie, an epic, worlds-spanning tale, that would appeal to all audiences.

...just not with Fox.

It's funny that Proyas' name continues to pop up -- Fox PR must be spreading it around to retain any good buzz it still might have with genre fans (which is nearly zilch, as far as I can tell), because there's literally a snowball's chance in you know what that he'll even answer a phone call from them right now.

If this movie does by chance get the greenlight at Fox while Tom Rothman is still in power, you won't see Alex Proyas get within 50 miles of the studio or the production. Rothman and his regime nearly bullied Proyas off of I,Robot; he won't work with them again while Rothman or any of "his people" are still there.

Unfortunately, even if Fox gives up the rights to the character, it's possible that they would still retain ownership of Straczynski's script... which I could see Rothman doing, just to p.o. Marvel...

Marvel needs to get FF away from Fox asap.

They don't need them to make a good Silver Surfer movie.

:up::up:

That's not a deal. That's if Marvel got the rights back.

Even though this movie sounds good and I'd like to see it, I actually hope it doesn't get made. That way, Fox may loose hope in FF and sell the rights back to marvel, who can reboot it and tie it into their new franchise.

Don't worry, folks!
RISE OF SS did poorly, so Fox won't do anything else and Marvel will regain the rights back.
After that, in 2016 Marvel Studios will release a 55th anniversary FF movie and a 50th ann. Silver Surfer movie.

If Fox is smart, they will just enter into an distribution agreement with Marvel and let someone else worry about the financial and creative side of things. They obviously don't have any real good intentions or grandiose plans for the franchise, other than making quick bucks, so just let it go.

That's exactly why I don't believe they'll be letting it go. These movies can continue to be cited as subpar and disappointing, but between the box office, merchandising, DVD monies and whatever else, they made money. At the end of the day, the studio couldn't really care less about about critiques until it affects the bottom line. Someone is going to have to throw some money at them to give up or alter the production rights.

The script sounds like it could be made into an awesome SS movie, but under Fox, it would probably be butchered to hell.

One can only hope that their disappointment lasts long enough for Marvel Studios to do this themselves. There's little to no hope of this being worth watching if 20th Century maintains the rights. But if Marvel can get JMS' script and cut off its ties to Fox's Fantastic Four franchise, maybe there's hope.

Still not holding my breath, though.

Double post. I might as well say something else...

Giant Humanoid Galactus! I want to travel the stars with my favorite space superhero. It would be the ultimate cosmic experience.

Me neither, the script does sound very good, but honestly, under Fox, how much of the goodness would be thrown away in order for them to get the movie down to a 90 min run-time?

I hope Marvel can figure out a way to get them back.

Here's the thing guys. Studios don't like getting showed up. So basically a studio will sit on something and not do anything with it, rather than another studio get the rights to it and make it a success.

Let Alba mature a bit more.

Why bother? Hollywood has dozens of better actresses who not only look like the character but who are superior actors that could do the role better then Jessica ever could.

Alba had two shots already. FF needs new blood.
