Horror Sinners - Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler Reunite

I know that some black Christians can do the most and be annoyingly hypocritical while doing so, but I have an unpopular opinion... I think that this film served two masters. It exhibits and didn't demonize the real practice of Hoodoo and also showed Christianity in a good light. It didn't put one over the other and showed the power of both.

Or at least that's what I got from it.

I saw it a second time, and I really don't think that interpretation holds up for christianity.

I feel you Sith.

All I’m saying is, Smoke told Preacher Boy to take his ass back to church and you saw that he was the only survivor.

But again that’s just what I got out of it.

Has Coogler talked about a sequel or, did he want this to be a standalone?
Every interview i've seen with him addressing the topic, he's said he saw it as a stand alone. Doing something that wasn't part of a franchise was one of his motivations to make the film.

It seems odd that when pitching the movie to different companies it was seen as a franchise.

WB expects him back after BP3 so we'll see if he does something different or something within this universe.

I do wonder after all the controversy whether this film will make a profit if they kinda want him to just stay in this lane. They now have something that works domestically and probably can do better internationally with a sequel.

New IP and it'll probably be on pins and needles whether it makes a profit again.

It might be a Creed situation where he never directs another film in the series, but there are sequels (and now upcoming spinoffs)

WB could conceivably offer him a lot of money to change his mind or even better, Offer to greenlight a project of his that wasn’t quite as commercial.
Although that having been said,
I would not exactly call Sinners a safe project.

Yeah but you have to keep in mind that
Smoke had just watched Sammie tear the house down with the twins’ dad’s guitar. He didn’t want Sammie to end up like their pops, another miserable old musician with nothing good about him but his guitar.

Saw it again last night. Really enjoyable movie and it was interesting what you notice on a repeat viewing, for example when Smoke was taking out the KKK guys at the end, you now realise Stack and Mary were inside their club so it brings a whole new meaning to Smoke's actions. He was protecting his little brother one last time and taking out some scum while doing it.

They were? I thought they ran off?

It was just before dawn when Smoke let Stack go and they were in the middle of no where. I don't see where they could have run off too so they must have been hiding inside.
You both are right.

This site has banned X/Twitter so I cant post a link. However, the movie has leaked to bootleg, but its not the one we saw in theaters. Instead the bootleg is actually from a different version of the movie. Its from a test screening.

A couple of tweets highlight a few differences
Delta saying past and future during Sammie's big musical number instead of Annie.
Remmick singing a few seconds to Sammie with the song "Travelin" that he sung to Stack earlier that day.
Also a cool/funny moment of Remmick's instant reaction to finally being let in

.

And to your point...
it has Stack saying he has to get Mary outta there once Annie died (implying the death sorta freaked them outta there connection to Remmick) and she took off and hid in the woods.

Obviously not the version they went with so I guess its still open for interpretation

Interesting. I don't see the woods being a great hiding spot from the daylight though. The club certainly would have been and it also would explain why Smoke went to the effort of locking it all up.

Annie dying definitely shocked Stack and Mary though. It was like they had planned to turn both her and Smoke as well to live with them. I noticed that on my further viewing.

An obvious route for the sequel would be to follow Stack & Mary from their escape to when they meet up with Old Sammie.
But I'm not sure i want to see another one without the 30's setting and the heavy blues influence. It's what gave the film such a unique feel.
A sequel to this would be like Joker 2 - purely a cash grab the the 1st film could do without.

Yup.

To keep it a buck. I would’ve let Hailee come in immediately and we all be dead, but oh what a jam!

My lord what a shot. But a 4min split diopter would have definitely rustled some normie feathers.

I do wish in the planning stages they just had it set for 2 or so mins.

Rocky Road and Go Lassie Go were each about 1:45.
