Sister act remake in the works

... The hell? Sister Act is on TV right now, and the second one is on after this. And I was thinking to myself "If this were made today, who would star?"

Then I log on to SHH and read this? The only reasonable explanation is that I have special powers.

The most intuitive choice is Jennifer Hudson, especially if they wanted to include more music. It might be an interesting way to blend a unique script for a sequel/reboot with the musical numbers from the stage show.

Keep in mind that the actress doesn't have to be black though; the original choice in the original movie was Bette Midler. If they are going colour blind, I would also like to see maybe Kristin Chenoweth or Sara Ramirez considered.

I imagine every executive making a female-led comedy these days has "Melissa McCarthy?!" scribbled at the top on their notebooks.

If a white actress gets chosen to play the lead(and Hollywood being Hollywood ppl have expressed that fear in relation to the news) there will be major criticism...and it will be deserved. The most successful comedy ever headlined by a female POC remade with a white and possibly prettier actress will catch heat.

And that white actress will then have to write an essay in Entertainment Weekly about the haters and internet trolls. :oldrazz:

Except that there is little in the original movie that specifically calls for a black actress, and even in the original movie, the original casting choice was a white actress (Bette Midler). Whoopi was only cast because Bette backed out.

I will allow A Godfather, Big Trouble in Little China, Avengers remakes, but Sister Act is where I draw the line.

No Whoopi, no sell.

Haha oh wow I watched it last night too! It's such a classic. My sister and I were texting each other the whole time about it (at least the first one)

Oh wow yes to Jennifer Hudson! What a great choice! I can also see them getting rebel Wilson as sister Mary Patrick following her post pitch perfect success.

Mary Robert would be great to be played by an unknown but very talented Broadway baby.

I wonder if they will follow more of the stage production for the remake rather than the original classic

No Whoopi, no sell.

I read somewhere (probably not true) that whoopi didn't like making the first two sister act films so maybe she won't come back? I hope she does though

I just wonder why they feel it has to be remade. The first one isn't that old and was done so well that they can't top it, so why bother? It's just going to come off as an inferior copy.

Greater advances in computer-generated special effects finally allow for the definitive film to be made about a wayward woman who turns a group of nuns into a show choir.

I think everyone is looking for brand names that could be franchises now and especially looking for fun women friendly movies after the success of bridesmaids, frozen and pitch perfect so that's why this is getting remade.

And to be honest if it's good I don't mind at all

Yeah, but it was already good the first time around. Are there really absolutely no other usable new properties they can make into a fun women friendly franchise, they have to use a Whoopi Goldberg vehicle that worked perfectly the first time?

Needs them originals to pique my crumpets. :o

BEVERLY HILLS COP originally called for a white actor and yet if a remake was announced today with a white lead playing Axel Foley don't pretend you wouldn't understand why there would be heat.

In a time where Hollywood is being called out for it's lack of diversity more vocally than ever before remaking the most successful comedy ever to star a non white woman, to date, and hiring a white actress on the dubious grounds you're using to justify that thought (it didn't specifically call for a black actress originally which is the exact kind of BS people are starting to side eye nowadays) is completely wrong headed.
