Skyforge : Ranged Gunner Class Detailed in Latest Site Update

Posted Jan 22, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with new information about one of the forthcoming game's classes, the Gunner. A ranged specialist, the Gunner can fire mini-guns, plasma rifles and use a missile launcher. Check out the video below to see the Gunner in action.
As a ranged DPS class, the Gunner's primary role is to engage and eliminate enemy targets as quickly as possible. While their allies are fighting on the frontlines, drawing the enemies' attention to themselves, the Gunner can select targets and focus on inflicting massive amounts of damage from afar. In order to inflict the maximum amount of damage, players will want to stay well behind the "tanks" and hit the farthest targets using the missile launcher firing mode!
Check out the Gunner skill tree and read more about the class on the Skyforge site.

Skyforge : Using Stats to Create the Character You Wish

Posted Feb 11, 2015

The latest Obsidian Entertainment and the Allods Team have posted lengthy and comprehensive look at how Skyforge players will be able to create the precise characters they wish to play by utilizing stats and abilities. According to the article, players are able to experiment with different synergies of abilities and stats on items to gain specific advantages for their chosen character class and play style.
Players begin with a basic set of stats that are somewhat interchangeable regardless of class. However, there are certain stats that are attached to a player's basic character class as well. Players can enhance their class abilities and chose stat preferences with equipment, the Ascension Atlas and through developing their Order.
Equipment will feature five tiers from Common to Legendary, with each tier having more modifiers than the last. By choosing ahead of time which stats are preferable to increase, players can adequately choose the correct equipment to bring that goal closer to fruition.
Players develop their Order by placing patrons in territories, building chapels and monuments, etc. Altars are attached to chapels that will see players receive bonuses that can then be applied to a preferred stat.
The article goes into more detail, so head to the Skyforge site to check it out.

Skyforge : The Pantheon System Revealed

Posted Feb 19,

The Skyforge site has been updated with a big new article to explain the Pantheon System, the game's equivalent to guilds in other MMOs.
The article goes into the creation process, a fairly standard method of a founder and those who will, in essence, sign the charter.
An interesting addition is that each player's adepts will get Pantheon-based missions to run. Completing these missions helps expand the number of members a Pantheon can have, up to a maximum of one hundred fifty.
Pantheons also have sub-groups called "clans" headed by commanders, each of whom shares equal power with the leader with the sole exception that they cannot kick the leader out of the Pantheon. By sub-dividing the Pantheon this way, the leader is absolved of having to keep track of every individual and can delegate responsibilities.
Another interesting twist is that Pantheon members can increase their own stats by helping with group activities like PvP or other growth activities.
Pantheons also have access to 'strongholds' or guild halls. There are several levels of construction, including:

  • Pantheon Chambers
  • Champion Tower
  • Power Sources
  • Distortion Analyzer
  • Academy
Each section of the stronghold directly benefits the Pantheon in any one of several ways. For instance, using the Distortion Analyzer, Pantheon leaders can more accurately pinpoint alien bases.

Lastly, Pantheon Wars are detailed. During these 100 v 100 battles, 50 players are sent on PvP missions, 50 on PvE trials. Victories in Pantheon Wars allow the winner to control territory and can earn members costumes, mounts and more.

Pantheons sound very interesting and more can be learned on the Skyforge site.

Skyforge : Producer Talks Transitioning to Closed Beta

Posted Feb 22, 2015

With the release of fantasy MMO Skyforge looming, the game's development director, Eric DeMilt took to the web this week to talk about the effort to which Obsidian's gone recently to transition the project to closed beta.
According to DeMilt,
Obsidian's been working to set up data centers in North America and Europe, piggybacking on a foundation already laid within Russia. Along with this, they're pushing to support more players and give them access to things like character customization, itemization, the marketplace and the unique Greatness system.
In the interest of keeping the lines of communication open between development and the community, they've begun hosting content streams and will be giving members of the community the chance to broadcast their own content.
For more information about Skyforge or to read the producer's letter in full, check out the official Skyforge website.

Skyforge : Closed Beta First Impressions

Posted Mar 13, 2015

Skyforge, part of a joint development initiative between Allods Team and Obsidian with My.com as the publisher, recently hit closed beta status. Expected to launch just a little bit later this year, the F2P MMORPG is one we’ve been following for a while. We’ve been dabbling in the beta, and these are our initial thoughts.
Read more of Bill Murphy's Skyforge: Closed Beta First Impressions.

Skyforge isn’t your typical MMO, at least not in some senses. In other ways, there’s not a whole lot here you haven’t seen done before. But it’s a visually stunning game, and one with pretty high production values. But, well… if you watch the video pasted below you’ll see that the voice over work needs some love, and is thankfully just placeholder.
Let’s get the basics out of the way. Skyforge has more in common with say Neverwinter, than a typical open world MMORPG like WoW or WildStar. You have a central hub where people rest between dungeons, PVP, and more traditional questing. From there, you pick one of several open world zones, adventures (solo to 3-man dungeons), PVP matches, and eventually 5-man dungeons, raids, and mass PVP scenarios. There is a visual representation of the world, but you can’t really travel throughout. It’s a zoned and instanced theme park MMORPG. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but full disclosure and my goal to inform you means I should mention the sort of game Skyforge is.
Still with me? Good, because despite a certain sense of “been there, done that” Skyforge is actually pretty fun.
[YT]hkvzis_dNLg[/YT]

Half sci-fi, half fantasy, Skyforge’s art style reminds me a lot of Silicon Knights’ Too Human, and that’s a good thing in my book. It has a unique look from top to bottom, including a very slick UI. The game begins with you taking on the role of a newly christened immortal arriving to take you place among other such lucky bastards. But before you can get acquainted with your new non-death, you tell the tale of how you came to be so akin to Connor Macleod. Once a mortal soldier in a war against nasty rat-men (think Warhammer Skaven), only to be overwhelmed and killed in battle via snazzy cut scene.
Dragged back to wherever these things and their master are from, you awaken because surprise! You’re an immortal. When you’re overwhelmed again while trying to escape their lair, you unleash some awesome looking whirly powers. And so a newbie prospective god is born. Once you’ve taken in this flashback, then you’re able to select your starting class, looks, and choose between being a male or female. Because immortals get choices, dawg! It’s worth noting you can and will be able to change your class or looks at any time, as stats and equipment are independent of your actual looks and costuming.
SF1_t.jpg

Combat is action-oriented, though with a soft-locking target reticle akin to Guild Wars 2 meets TERA. You begin with just one or two skills assigned to the left and right mouse clicks, but as you progress in each class (you have just one character who can switch freely between classes) you learn more skills, combos, and so forth. In the beta, we only have access to a handful of classes, and early on you start with just the Paladin (sword and board tank with lightning magic), Cryomancer (fantastically fun ice mage), and the Lightbinder (support with some nice AOE). It’s important to note that there doesn’t seem to be a real healer in a traditional sense with Skyforge. Support classes offer buffs and other spells to aid folks, but pretty much all the classes can do damage, with the “Damage” classes being the ones that flat out go the most offensive, at the expense of defense and support abilities.
In my time with Skyforge so far though, around 4 hours, I’ve not really had a hard time with any of the classes. Combat, as it always seems, is really easy early on. It becomes a bit more layered as you learn combos, especially with the Paladin, but by and large it’s pretty much click to kill. I’d expect the game to become more difficult as you go, but I can’t comment on that just yet.
There is a main story guiding you through the first few hours, your first “adventure” dungeon, and several steps of character progression and the game can seem pretty on rails those first few hours. I’m told that once all the main intro exposition is over you become freer to roam about and do your own thing, but right now I get the feeling that a main narrative is still the crux of what drives you from one area to the next.
You don’t get XP in a traditional sense for beating monsters or completing quests in Skyforge. Instead, you get prestige from your overall item/equipment score that determines how hard challenges are for you. And since class and prestige determines what you can wear, this score can change depending on your chosen class and how far you’ve progressed in playing. You get gear as rewards, from drops, and can upgrade items using salvage from unwanted gear. On top of this, there’s the Ascension Atlas, a fancy way to say “skill tree” that gives each class bonus stats and new skills as you spend gems earned from playing the game’s many types of content.
SF2_t.jpg

Rubies of Strength unlock red nodes on the Atlas and increase damage output, Emeralds of Life unlock green nodes and increase defensive stats, while Sapphires of Knowledge unlock blue nodes and grow secondary stats as well as new talents later on in character growth. Early, the Atlas is straightforward, but after some time progressing you unlock your Ultimate ability with a class and the top tier of the Atlas which leads to far less linear progression within your class. It’s something we’ll touch on more as we play, because we’ve just scratched the surface ourselves.
So far, my biggest worries about Skyforge are its voiceovers (they’re really that bad) and the general lack of other things to do besides killing stuff. I haven’t yet touched (or even discovered) crafting, and while the visuals and combat are stunning and fun I’m wondering how much fun will be had in 10, 20, 50, and 100+ hours. There seems to be a decent chunk of content to chew through, and the Observatory’s map of activities keeps changing so that not all content is available at any given time. It’s basically on a randomized cycle to keep people playing together in the open zones and available group queued content. But if killing monsters and trying to become a god is really all there is, well… who am I kidding? That’s pretty much most theme park MMOs these days. At least it’ll be fun while it lasts.
One final thing I wanted to mention is that the cash shop really doesn’t play into this CBT. You can see that there’s a currency available for RMT, but unlike other F2P games right now it seems that Skyforge won’t be throwing “deals” and “buy now!” into your face every login. I know the team wants to make money, and if the game’s fun I will, so I hope this stays the case up into launch later this year.
Look for more content on Skyforge as the beta progresses from myself or any one of our talented writers currently dabbling with the upcoming MMO. Is this one going to be the next MMOssiah? Nah. But if you let your cynicism wall down and just play, you’ll likely have some fun.

Skyforge : Keeping the Dialog Open About Monetization

Posted Mar 26, 2015

Skyforge's community manager Maeron has taken to the official forums with a strong statement about the ongoing discussion of the game's monetization strategy. The statement was penned in response to players "pasting" the P2W accusation on Skyforge. According to Maeron, such allegations damage a game's reputation before it has a chance to launch and that players must place some level of trust in the developers creating the game.
Maeron's response is part of the "Will NA/EU Have the Same Cash Shop System as RU?" thread
.
Monetization in free to play is often a source of endless debate involving different parties, ranging from the “core freeplayers" to the “compulsive buyers".
One of the challenges of developing a "free to play" is addressing the demands of each party. Once you've formalized and implemented a plan, however, you're still not done.
You often have to communicate with your members and explain the underlying mechanisms of your design – and doing so usually dissipates most concerns and leads to better feedback from players. Over time, both the developers and players grow a better understanding of sustainable commercial practices.
However, these days it's no longer possible since too many people are prone to pasting the term P2W onto pretty much every situation. This behavior is extremely harmful, in the sense that it damages the image of a game before it has even had a chance to reach to its community. One must trust the developers' vision.
It also weakens the dialog between the community and the developers of the game they play.
For these reasons, we will strive to provide answers to our members in need of details regarding our monetization - but in turn, we won't tolerate the word P2W as of today, nor tolerate oversimplification of monetization in topics.
Members participating in the forum this early in the game project ought to allow its community to grow with a sense of responsibility and communication practices that don't undermine their relationship with the skyforge team.
We'll still ask you to respect our rules out of respect for the community that will establish here and align with the developers' views. Once OBT opens in our territories, everyone will have a chance to check the monetization aspects of Skyforge for themselves.
Please note that repeated failure to comply shall result in the removal of your forum rights and beta access.
Check out the rest of the thread at the link above.
What do you think of Maeron's statement? Is it a fair response? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

General : The Daily Quest - How Do You Define Pay to Win?

Posted Mar 26, 2015

It's a touchy subject, but spurred on by the recent discussion regarding Skyforge's monetization model I figure now is a good a time as any. Let's do this: how do you, the player, define Pay to Win (P2W) in your games?

For me, it's simple: anything someone can pay for that gives a player an upper-hand, while a non-paying player cannot earn the same thing in game: that's pay to win. I can go deeper to talk about the kinds of items I like seeing (cosmetic, convenience, XP boosters, bag slots, character slots, etc) and the things I loathe seeing (weapons, gear, etc.). But really, it boils down to the simple rule: let all players, paying and free be on equal ground competitively.

Do I care of Joe Money can buy his way to the level cap before me? Nah. Do I care if he has a glowing horse? Nope. But I do care if he can straight up by the best gear in the game while I have to work hard for the mediocre sort.

An let's be fair... subscription based games solve this issue, but we all see how they survive these days so we might as well come up with a simple description for Pay to Win so we can all keep each other informed.

To recap: Pay to Win = the ability to pay real money for in-game competitive edge. In PVE, I don't really care. PVP is the thing that should be held sacred away from Whales.
That's my definition. What's yours?

Skyforge : The Daily Quest - Will You Play Skyforge?

Posted Mar 27, 2015

Closed Beta 2 is well under way, and by now you've watched videos, seen our streams, or played the game yourself. Having quite a lot in common with Neverwinter (at least in my book), I wonder how many of our dear readers will be playing Obsidian and Allods Team's MMORPG when it goes live later this year.
Personally, as I said while streaming last night, I look at Skyforge as an ideal "quick bite MMO". It's got solid enough combat and class progression to keep me interested in the short term, even if I don't think I'll be playing it for months on end as my only game. There's nothing wrong with an MMO that's meant to capture players for a few weeks at a time, especially when they're designed as F2P from the start.
As long as the Cash Shop isn't too intrusive (as it was in Neverwinter), I expect I'll play Skyforge a good bit when it launches, even if just for an hour here or there. It's definitely not perfect, but it's fun in short spurts, and there are some really nice ideas present as well.
But what about you? Will you be playing Skyforge? That's today's Daily Quest... get cracking.

Skyforge : Detailed Developer Response to CBT Feedback

Posted Mar 28, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with a massive post by the development team that discusses the most salient points of player feedback from the first rounds of closed beta testing. The post discusses major issues and how the team plans to respond to each and / or gives the reasons behind the feature being deployed as it is.
Topics include:
Run Animation - the team is working on new variations of the run animation and cycle to answer the claim that it looked "weird".
Client Optimization - the client has been optimized with 30% improvement in FPS. The system has been redesigned to detect automatically, new settings were added for compatibility and other useful information.
The ability to loot during combat will be added.
Weekly limits - the team is working on finding ways to ensure that weekly limits are both challenging yet not punitive to players who feel that forcing achievement infringes on their leisure time. Developers are looking for ways to assist players who join the game later in catching up with more experienced and advanced players. The goal, they said, is to give players more and more ways to develop and progress characters and how that will happen will be detailed in a future post.
Beginning content will be pared back as feedback has indicated that future phases should have "substantially less content at launch". Open Beta will give more adventures to players sooner. In addition, the team is taking a hard look at the combat difficulty of the earliest stages of the game. For future release in CBT, players can look forward to finding "impossible adventures" once a given prestige level is reached.
Melee players are concerned with the proclivity of combo interrupts when an enemy dodges or moves. It is a feature that the team is looking closely at and is constantly fine tuning. As yet, no viable solution has been offered.
Players concerned with being unable to dodge all attacks in the game have been informed that this is a planned mechanic to ensure that high-dexterity players do not have a significant advantage over other classes. As a result, dodge is a limited resource by design.
PvP balance is being looked at, especially the complaint that Finishing Attacks in PvP look like a "cheat" due to how fast an enemy can be killed.
The Orders System is undergoing change:

  • Adepts will no longer require payment for services but a limited number can be hired
  • Adepts will no longer increase player stats
  • Adepts will have their own profession-based stats
  • Mission resources are being changed
Prestige and group play are also receiving some attention. Players were concerned that they could not play with friends of different prestige levels and due to the inability to set or know the adventure difficulty. To that end:

  • Group prestige requirements are being removed
  • The system to determine the difficulty of adventures is being tweaked
  • A PvE version of Looking for Adventure is being added with the selection systems being overhauled
  • PvP matchmaking is going to be adjusted and other barriers for matchmaking are being removed

Skyforge : High-End Progression Revealed in New Blog

Posted Mar 31, 2015

Creative Director Alexander Mishulin has penned a new post that has been posted on the Skyforge site to give players new information about the end game and some of the goals for players at level cap.
To begin with, Mishulin reveals the Skyforge goals for high-end players:

  1. Taking the next step on the path of divinity. While Mishulin hesitates to reveal any real information about what this means, he does say that players attaining this vaunted status will be set apart from the lesser gods in Skyforge.
  2. Keeping a player's Pantheon on top and at its best.
To do so, players can take part in Platoons which are similar to raids with 10-players working through the content and attaining an Epic Ring when complete.

10-players can also take part in Distortions for those players looking for an epic challenge. Monsters encountered are considered "especially difficult" and players will be required to complete one set before moving on to the next, more difficult, set and so on. Mishulin essentially calls it an "arena" with only one very difficult encounter. Players will score Epic Weapons for beating Distortions.

Anomalies will also be available, but in the open world. Five players will take on enemies next to these anomalies and several groups in the area can also be involved in the fight by pulling enemies to their group and defeating them. Beating the first opponent allows for another and the encounters are considered unique. Players will gain Epic Trophies for defeating anomalies.

At the highest levels, players will need to defend the world from hostile gods through a progressively more difficult string of battles over time. Fighting a godly avatar is considered even more difficult than those bosses found in Distortions.
Lastly, players can take part in the Pantheon Wars that allow for simultaneous PvP and PvE fights that yield rewards to winners and are exclusive to this end game activity.

Skyforge : Unlimited Buy Up for Character Progression Slowed by Caps

Posted Apr 07, 2015

The Skyforge team has taken to the official blog to lay out some of the underlying philosophy behind the game's monetization.
Of most particular note is the inclusion of weekly caps on certain progression "currency" that should allay fears that characters can "buy their way" up to level cap. In addition, while players can accelerate their progress, they gain no advantage over others of a similar level.
Real world currency can be spent to boost progression gains, but there are limits to the most significant 'currencies' as outlined below:

  • Mastery currency will be capped weekly for Weapon Enhancements
  • Sparks limit progression through the Ascension Atlas and can only be gained by actively playing Skyforge
  • Orders will only progress as a player's Leadership progresses which comes through unlocking various nodes in the Ascension Atlas
  • Leadership will also affect Pantheon benefits
Check out the Skyforge site for more information about how the monetization philosophy.

Skyforge : Distortions Add Another Dimension to Endgame Play

Posted Apr 08, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with a new developer blog to lay out another component of end game play. Called "Distortions",
these special events become available after players have unlocked their divine forms and if Pantheons have access to a special piece of equipment called an Analyzer. Using the Analyzer on the tactical globe in the Divine Observatory, groups will be able to see special distortions marked on the map.
Up to ten gods from the same Pantheon can then travel to that location to take part in a special battle against four opponents one after the other. These aren't everyday dungeon or raid bosses, but are survivors of past attacks and hundreds of years of similar battles.
Defeating a Distortion yields fame and honor, Epic weapons, trophies and advancement to the next stage of the player's divine form.
