Smallville: Season 5 on HD DVD 11/28

If I recall no they where shot in standard def for video/audio. Which is why they still haven't released seasons one through four in hd yet. Since last I recall about a yr ago they would having tehcnical problems getting it to work out. Hopefully they will happen.

They were all shot in HD, I believe, because they had the foresight to do that. They were shooting in widescreen before it was common in TV, hence the letterbox on the earlier seasons DVD sets even though the show was broadcast in 4:3 format (SD).

I'm not sure why the Blu-Ray isn't out for all seasons, but proof that they were shot in HD is that Season 1 and other early seasons are available on iTunes in hi-def.

HDNet also airs early episodes and they look fantastic.

i really hope once this season is over they will release the series set over the summer (similar to what they did with LOST) on blu-ray i'd defintely pick that up.

well even though things air on hd channels and all that they may not always be shot/formated as such.

I wouldn't count on the seperate seasons being released on Blu...but I'm sure they'll do a 'complete collection' on Blu Ray.

Part of my thinking in the original question was that if they can bring out the earlier seasons on Blu, they're probably holding off on it until the series ends and the full set comes out and they'll release the earlier seasons at the same time for the people who picked up the later individual ones already.

I was also trying to determine if it was worth picking up the regular DVD sets at WalMart for $15 each or holding out for the eventual release of early season Blu's.

I thought the problem was the fx done for the show weren't hd so they would need to be redone if they wanted to release the earlier seasons on blu-ray.

Yea I don't recall fully the article I read before that said they had problems converting the early yrs.

Something else to factor in is that upconverting has gotten better in the past five years, so maybe just up-conning the FX shots would be enough to make them at least acceptable on Blu.
