Musical Smash on NBC

The pilot was solid but the problem with Smash is that they aren't focusing enough on the two likable leads and the side stories are boring and not fleshed out. They need better writers, stat.

Agreed, some if not most of the dialogue is cringe-worthy. Like the baby shower in the last episode, I would have loved to see Karen's girlfriends fall of a cliff.

I didn't see last night episode because I forgot it was on.

I was surprised to see the assistant has a girlfriend. I honestly thought he was gay.

Was I the only one who thought the girlfriend reminded them of Khandi Alexander?

Smash is doing Office numbers...which isn't that bad. If The Office can keep going then I think Smash can stick around.

The Office has fan loyalty and had consistently good rating since the beginning and only started to really crash this season. Smash, being a new show, has a lot more to prove than a show that's been one of the cornerstones of the network for 8 years.

Although looking at Season 1 numbers, I'm surprised it got a season 2. The Office crashed worse than Smash did.

I didn't expect to like this show, but it really is pretty good. I do think though that they have a few too many characters and some of them are just boring. I hope Julia's husband gets killed off or something because that dude is just lame. Same with her annoying kid. Really, they need to drop that whole adoption subplot because it drags down the show.

I'm also getting sick of Angelica Houston's character being restaurant-stalked by her ex-husband in every episode. Seriously, what is up with that? Can't they find at least ONE other place for them to run into each other?

And yeah, I do think they need to focus even more on Katharine and Megan's characters because they are both really talented and should be the heart and soul of the show. They are to some degree right now, but they need to be more prominent and the writers need to drop the cliches (especially with Katharine's character).

I agree with this. I think both Karen and Ivey are played by likable actresses and could be interesting characters. However, they're underdeveloped past "My boyfriend wants to spend more time with me/my dad wants me to get a "real" job" and "do you think the director really likes me, you guys?"

I think Deborah Messing and Tom are really compelling characters with likable personalities. But the "cheating" and "adoption" subplots are meh...I guess they just need better subplots and writing, because when the show is focused on actually making the musical its quality level shoots up 20 points before it drops back down.

P.S. I did enjoy the American Idiot-ized rendition of Bruno Mars. It was pretty funny.

The creator of the show does have a story credit on the Catwoman movie.

Wow that brings down A LOT of hope for this show. :(

She has written a lot of plays so she knows the behind the scenes elements and has written for respectable shows but yeah she had a story credit, it wasn't a screenplay credit so she isn't fully responsible for CINO.

This was a better episode, didn't care for Nick Jonas (there's something very creepy about him). I'm actually happy they're going back to Ivy vs. Karen. And Karen made me feel sorry for her. Damn. I like Ivy and now I like Karen and McPhee's dancing has improved but not by much. I did love her singing 'Rumor Has It', although I'm tired of that song.

it was supposed to be a shocking reveal for some reason. he's trying to sabotage the musical or something.

Did anyone else notice the bad lip-syncing in the original song?

Yeah, the lip-syncing is pretty bad. The episode was okay but there are a lot of storylines going on that I don't care for. Really, I'm only interested in Ivy vs. Karen. I don't care about Debra Messing's affair or Angelica Houston's divorce. I don't care for Tom or his annoying creepy assistant. I don't care for Karen's boyfriend or those gossipy background dancers. I was really hoping for this show to be a mature and consistent version of Glee but it's losing me with each passing episode. Glee, on the other hand, was great during its first half of season 1.

I like this show, it's a fun watch and change of pace. I really don't see the need for the whole Debra Messing/guy angle though, he was introduced as a happy family man yet he's constantly looking at Messing with longing looks as if he's some teenager yet to feel a boob. I also think Karen's boyfriend is dull and stifles the chance of her having an interesting romantic angle.

Anjelica Huston's hubby stuff may be a bit pointless but I do like the running drink in the face gag. :D

The crux of the show for me though is Karen vs Ivy, sleazy director being sleazy, and Messing and her buddy all working to bring the musical to the stage. Not sure what the pretend gay assistant with the Carlton Banks fashion fixation is up to though.

Btw, are the songs from the show up for download on Amazon or iTunes?

Huh. I thought this episode was a BIG improvement over last week's.

-No heavy handed father shaking his head disappointingly at Karen.
-Not a single mention of adoption.
-No "All About Eve" supposedly-straight assistant subplot.
-Better use of a Top 40 song (Rumor Has It > Redneck Woman. Fact)
-Focus back on Ivy vs. Karen (and Ivy came off as kind of a *****...:oldrazz: )
-The background dancers actually developing some personalities, even if they're stereotypical.

All in all, I was feeling the show was going off the rails last week and they have convinced me to stick with the whole season with this episode.

lol Kind of? This broad is letting her insecurities get the best of her, which is understandable given that she ****ed the director in order to get the lead. Everyone around her fawning over her like some precious little pet of theirs doesn't really help matters. At least Derek is willing to cut her down to size when the situation calls for it.

Has this got any chance of getting a second season?

Agreed with all of this except I prefered Redneck Woman.
