I think most people immediately associate "smoker" with "he's addicted to smoking." And when I attempt to explain that I am not addicted, people automatically assume I am making excuses.
I went two days last week without a cigarette. I had no desire to smoke at all, either.
so jmanspace....i thought if you smoked 'bacco your addicted no matter what.
so.....you must be smoking lettuce.
What is your reason for smoking? If you have no problem with stopping, why continue to do it?
Is the stress relief now worth the greater health risks in the future? Just because your healthy now doesn't mean you always will be in spite of your smoking habits.

My addiction was psychological as well. When I decided I was ready to just be done with it, I chain-smoked one after the other until I threw up. My last memory of smoking is not a pleasant one. Self mind-f**k FTW!

After a few days of not smoking, I no longer feel the need to. It's the social situations, like hanging out in a bar/club that I feel the temptation to smoke while drinking socially. But other than that, when I'm alone I can find better things to do with my time than stand outside in the freezing cold smoking a cigarette that I can barely hold because my fingers are numb.
Ever watched that TV show "Intervention" with all the meth and heroin addicts on it whose families intervene to try and save? They all say that line: "I can quit anytime I want!". Haha! If you say so.

Oh college memories. I set my hair on fire once trying to light a smoke while huddled in a blanket/blocking the lighter from the wind.
If there's any 'but' after 'I can quit when I want' then you're contradicting yourself.
I hate people at least 78% more than your average person and I don't drink or smoke or anything else to 'cope.'
Yeah, I smoke, therefore I am utterly clueless as to the health problems and risks associated with it.
I forgot that in today's day and age, people are taught that smokers don't make any conscientious decisions at all. It is either the work of evil tobacco executives and ad campaigns, or lack of willpower on our behalf.

There are healthier stress relievers than smoking. I suggest *********ion.Already stated this point: It is an excellent stress reliever.
Who says it's going to take off only 5-6 years of your life?As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather knock off the five or six years where I'll be crapping myself constantly and forced to eat out of tubes... so I'm not all that concerned about the potential loss of life which may result from my actions.
No, dude, I don't think that at all, but like...
How do I explain this?
Have you ever been arguing with a friend who is doing something incredibly destructive with their life, but they have a perfectly LOGICAL explanation for why it's all cool, and they have a perfectly LOGICAL reason why what they're doing is totally SENSIBLE, but you just know that ultimately they're using this semantical, convoluted non-logic that doesn't actually apply in these destructive circumstances?
And inevitably, despite all their claims, it DOES end badly?
I'm surprised you haven't seen this happen, because in time, I've seen it happen over and over, especially with smoking. People taking up smoking to chill out, fit in, whatever and it's a horrible choice, because they ALWAYS have a good reason why it won't catch and why they won't regret it and why they won't get addicted and, and-
And inevitably a few years later they realize how much the drug was already ********ting them, no matter how logical it all sounded coming out of their mouths, and they shake their head and regret how invincible they felt.
So, no, I do believe you have the power to make a decision. I just believe that you have chosen to allow every logical mechanism in your brain to make these perfectly airtight excuses so you can continue with it and have no worries.

If that's how you want to live, that's sad and unfortunate. But I won't stop you from slowly killing yourself.

That's not contradictory. That's explaining that, if I wanted to, I could put aside cigarettes and not smoke at all. However, I want to smoke.
The difference is, I have actually gone extended periods of time without cigarettes in the brief year I have been smoking, and have never been physically or psychologically compelled to pick up a cigarette in that time period. Heroin and meth addicts, on that show especially, are the complete opposite.
Everything I have done has been voluntary. Then again, I smoke less than your average smoker does anyway, so perhaps that has something to do with it. Maybe I learned that moderation is the best way to approach an addictive substance.
