Red Skull?

He was guarding the Soul Stone, and after Thanos got it, he no longer served a purpose. Would he be free, or just vanish?

It also seemed like he was more like a ghost/spirit versus the old Red Skull. What does everyone think might have happened to him?

Wonder if he will return for A4?

Doesn't seem too out there to think he's still alive, he'd be what, 105, 110 or something. With the serum, who knows? Probably extends life just a little.

But yeah, I couldn't figure whether he's still alive/corporeal and the effect was just the stone's hold on him, or if he's genuinely some cosmic spirit type of dealio.

Guess that'd be key in whether he comes back. Honestly though, the fact they just got Marquand, and he's doing a Hugo impression rather than some reinvention with a new personal take, makes me think it's probably the guy's swan-song.

You wouldn't re-cast with Marquand as the lead villain in a movie, he seems a little too "smalltime" at this point in his career. Seems either it just wasn't worth going after a semi-reluctant Hugo for a single scene (you'd figure it'd be pretty easy though, the guy would probably agree for something so small to send the character off for good) and they went with a cheaper soundalike, with any future appearances being worthy of getting Hugo back, or the more likely scenario where this is really it for Skull, bye-bye.

Which would be a shame, but for the MCU it'd be fine.

I can't help but be underwhelmed by that whole sequence and idea. Like... It added nothing other than to have a "shocking" moment and to figuratively hit the audience over the head with a four by four with the words "See... It's All Connected" carved into it. It was more random than meaningful.

I don't think it was random or without meaning.

Ultimately it was Thanos relinquishing his "humanity" for Godhood. I thought it was a fantastic scene and elevated Thanos as a villain.

You missed my point... You could have done all that without dragging Skull into it. Say it wasn't Skull but the "spirit" of the Other instead. Wouldn't have changed that scene in the least. That's what I was referring to, the inclusion of Skull. It was rather random and didn't add anything. It could have been a disembodied voice in that scene and the outcome is the same.

I like the Skull being stuck there 70 years. It kind of gave a Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade vibe, which was an inspiration for the first Captain America movie, with the Grail Knight guarding the Cup of Christ.

It also goes back to the first movie where Skull killed the guardian of the Cosmic Cube in that church. Now he is cursed as a guardian for an Infinity Stone because of that murder.

I don't think it was random. I think the scene will have it's purpose revealed in part two, and I think it will have something to do with Steve Rogers.

I would like to hope he's still around somewhere to be involved within the MCU again at some point, but I have low expectations of that. I don't remember Red Skull previously having the ability of levitation, so I am wondering whether the form of him we saw was, in some fashion, his spirit form, that disappeared once Thanos had acquired the stone.

It was fantastic to see the Red Skull again - but what happened to his German accent?

It's hard to imagine an uber-Nazi dropping his German accent for an English one..

Yes I too wondered why he didn't have a German accent especially being an obscure German colonel during WW2

I think they might use him for Avengers 4.

There seems to be strong evidence for time travel being involved so I could see them traveling back to WW2 and Russos just use Marquand.

If they travel back all the way to WW2 that would be a far stretch...like think Back to the Future or Terminator like time travel in this scenario you forever alter the damn timeline

Great Scott!!!!! :woot:

Yeah but then if they do all of that and bring Red Skull back then would they actually make him the next Big Bad of the universe carrying on from where Thanos left off

Ah my apologies! Yea I get what you are saying. But I'm sure the film makers have heard or read about fans wondering what happened to Skull. So they decided to throw him in here. I guess it's a bit superfluous, but ehh, why Not?

I for one was happy that a dangling plot thread from 2011 is finally resolved - and isn't that the point of this movie - it IS all connected

I could tell right away it was a different actor. Hugo wouldn't do it and the accent was totally different.

It was nice to have that thread closed and to see him again though.

Sure the scene could have played out differently - as could any other scene in the movie - but having it be the Skull, someone with a personal connection to an Infinity Stone, is much less "random" than the "spirit" of the Other or Lady Death or whom ever else it might have been.

It was clear from the first Cap movie that the Skull had not died so this closes that thread nicely, as opposed to a clearly dead character with no direct connection to the stones suddenly being there. Also, I thought it was a nice nod and twist on the Lady Death image from the comics - the black robe and skull face, but the Red Skull rather than her - very clever.

I honestly didn't even notice. I was too drawn into his appearance and his explanation of what happened to him and how to get the Soul Stone.

Agreed, I really enjoyed it being the Red Skull.
My wife and kids are borderline hardcore fans but not as much as me (and I'm nothing compared to some here), so they were like, "didn't he die?". When I reminded them of his CA ending and how he teleported, they were all, Oh yes! That's so cool! afterwards.
I think it works well whether you remember CA or not (as a random).

I thought it sounded just like him the first time I saw it, but on the second viewing it was more obvious. I think I was just so surprised to see him that I didn't notice.

Harder than imagining an uber-Nazi traveling across space to become a guide toward obtaining a mystic gem that requires the sacrifice of a loved one to obtain?

It's a nice touch and fitting punishment

At the very least it's to tie off the loose end of what happened to the Red Skull, Marvel may not be interested in using him again since they've been pretty on board with focusing on new villains instead of reoccurring ones. Specially since the next film may be Chris Evans' last, there may never be a reason to bring him back

^ now I'm just hoping they tie up other loose ends, namely Abomination and Leader.
