It seems as though Samuel Jackson really did drop that spoiler a while back. lol
It struck me too that Red Skull could be their take on the concept of Death rather than being a literal embodiment of Death. Not only does he have the Grim Reaper visage with the skull and cloak, but he guards the soul stone and serves as an omen of Gamora's impending death.
Though I have to wonder if Red Skull has served his purpose. The cameo doesn't fully explain the how or why of his role. Could be have a purpose outside of his cameo or could his role be elaborated in in A4?
Also, I thought it was a nice nod and twist on the Lady Death image from the comics - the black robe and skull face, but the Red Skull rather than her - very clever.
