Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Summer 2010

Gamers suck...

Fans. They're never happy with anything, are they? Sega announces Sonic the Hedghog 4, a 2D retro experience that people have been clamoring for since the move to 3D, and people still manage to find things to complain about. Some of the complaints I already addressed, but by far the most controversial issue seems to be the fact that Sonic himself doesn't look old school enough.

Internet justice to the rescue! Fans have set up a petition (470 sigs and counting) in a bid to make Sega change the current Sonic design to something more reminiscent of the Genesis era. Apparently, people aren't fans of the sleeker modern Hedgehog, and want the old pot-bellied guy back on their screens. Sega's bound to ignore the outcry, but it never hurts to try I suppose.

As possibly the biggest (or only) Sonic fan on Destructoid's staff, I personally have never had an issue with Sonic's current look. I might be in the minority, but I've always kind of liked the way he looks these days, and I don't think character design has ever been the guy's biggest problem. Still, if people are determined to find things to whine about before we've seen more than a teaser trailer, I guess this is as good a subject as any.

Why would an animal that can run at the speed of light have a pot belly? The current design is right in line with how something would look that could run that fast.

Jesus why don't those fans just go back and play the old games.:whatever:

Ryan Davis had some interesting words for Sonic 4 on the latest Bombcast. :hehe:

Does realism really matter with Sonic the bloody Hedgehog, though? That said, I prefer the current version anyway, so it's not a problem for me. The current look is reminiscent of Spaz's drawings of him in the '90s Archie comics, which I liked at the time.

Yes, I want my hedgehog grounded in reality and dark. :cmad:

Character eye color
Ring size
Character model
Sign not spinning fast enough

These are silly complaints fans are making. Disliking them is one thing but people are talking as if the game is doomed because of them. Even if they don't like them they are not big enough issues or bad enough to ruin the entire game.

Good god. And here I thought I was being petty for wanting the second player to be Tails again.

I'm a little dismayed about the "Sonic-only" mentality, but it's not a big deal because this is clearly a "back to basics, cut all the extra junk out" approach, and that means the focus is and should rightly be solely on Sonic. We'll probably at least see Tails and Knuckles in future episodes, if not play as them.

Is it true that they'll only be four zones? If so, that is a bit disappointing. I was hoping for seven or eight.

Where'd you hear that? 4 zones sounds pretty impressive for one episode of a game that will presumably have several, to be honest.

7 or 8 is a full game which this supposedly is not. I think pricing is more importnat. With 4 zones, I hope its not more than $10.

I dont get the basis for the complaints, bc Sonic hasnt ahd a pot belly since Sonic Adventure.

http://sonicstadium.org/news/zone-quantity-mystery-images-and-broniks-in-latest-sonic-4-site-leak

This news has been bouncing around from site to site and more speculation has been running wild.

The Wiire is reporting that “Vash” from Game-Hackers.com has decompiled the flash website of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and looking at the code, you can make many guesses as to what it all means.

Here’s the first bit of code that looked weird:

preorderBtn1 = new preorderBtn();

Pre-order? Like, as in, a retail release? The next line of code that catches my eye is “bronik.” It is my new word (until I find one that exceeds it in cool):

<broniks text=”BADNIKS” />

One of the big questions revolves around the length of an “episode.” The code leads us to believe that there will be 4.

zone1Btn
zone2Btn
zone3Btn
zone4Btn
zonesBtn

The final thing found within the site is a series of buttons within some mystery image that is currently not in use:

That's pretty thin. Either way, though, Havok's right: It's being released in an episodic format, so all that really matters is length vs. price vs. time between releases, not length by itself. I wouldn't mind if we got one zone per episode, so long as they price it reasonably (like, under $5) and release new ones every couple months or so.

I think this game will be cool, i loved the sonic games when i was little, so this game will be a treat to play.

There is one thing I must now know: Will the bonus stages be coming back in any form?

you'd better be able to play as Super Sonic in every level after you collect the Chaos Emeralds or, mark my words, heads will ROLE!!!! :cmad: :cmad: :cmad:

I haven't been a gamer for a while, but I think I just will play this game!

Has anyone seen the rant on Youtube by that jackass called aknotholeresident? I love me some Sonic (well, the good games anyway), but I hate idiots like him that'll always find something to complain about.

I myself prefer the current Sonic (quills could use a trim, but he actually looks athletic now). Do these fools really need justification for why he looks the way he does in a sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Why do comic book characters look so different in a flashback of an event from a thirty-year-old issue?

I just looked him up. Are you talking about the video where a bunch of people are talking, and one of them complains that it looks like Sonic is running slower? I mean, Joses Christ. They animated his legs slower, but it looks like the same pace. If anything, I'd say games like Sonic Unleashed move way too fast.
