I feel like Sonic Heroes is the direction they should go in for the next movie. Also, I want them to spend most of the movie off-world.
That’s going to depend a lot on the final box office for Sonic 3. If it ends up being around $600-$700 million, I could see them willing to splurge a bit more of the necessary money for the next film to be able to do what you’re suggesting. If it still makes a decent amount, but only makes barely or around $500 million on a $122 million budget, good luck with that.
As popular at these films are, they’re still gambles, and the more expensive they are, the more of a gamble the box office returns become. For perspective Wonka, which cost $125 million, used extensive CGI set extension and VFX for a bunch of animals, and that was with mainly human actors and a lot of sets that were half built. That made $39 million opening weekend, a little over half of what Sonic 3 made its opening weekend, and $634 million worldwide, which is pretty close to how much I guessed Sonic 3 would make according to a similar budget.
For examples of entirely CGI films, The “live action” The Lion King cost $260 million, and Mufasa: The Lion King cost $200 million. The former, adjusted for inflation, would cost over $320 million today and have made over $2 billion. The latter bombed severely, making only $35 million opening weekend. The former was made in 2019, before Covid, and when the success of those kinds of films was more of a sure thing. Now, most films like that barely break $1 billion on similar budget. Spider-Man: No Way Home, for all of the acclaim that it got, even with the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire showing up in the film, couldn’t even crack $2 billion at $1.9 billion. In the old days, that would’ve been a piece of cake.
At best, if Sonic 3 does really well at the box office, we might get some of but not all of what you would like for the next film. At worst, it’s probably going to be about the same ratio as Sonic 3. The fact of the matter is, filming with actual human actors and on location is just less expensive and less time intensive. If these were animated, that would be a different story, but they’re not, so we are where we are.
