The South saying "the government is no longer acting in our benefit" - is that maybe because people wanted the South to stop owning people and forcing them to work their land because they were considered property and not people??
mmmno. not universally. look at my first post on this page. it talks about the original issues the southern states had with the federal government, which lead to their succession. slavery was actually none issue for the most part (during his campaign, Lincoln promised to preserve slavery) and generally the North was just as racist against the blacks as the South.

Irregardless isn't a real word and it's a logical absurdity. :)

Also, I'm not socially awkward, and you didn't get me hot and bothered. Don't flatter yourself. :)

Oh. :csad: its okay, I'll flatter myself later.

You're somehow interpreting anger or whatever because I choose to be pointed and then subsequently insulting. I don't have to be angry to insult someone. Usually I'm bored or amused. :)

Ah. So boredem + maturity = insults. Got it. Thanks! :whatever:

Apparently my attempt to make things clear and defuse things politely didn't go over too well.

Not that I would accept someones fake attempts at "politeness" (is that what you call it? I'd call it **********ness) after acting the way you have. if it were in real life, i'd probably be pooping in your pillow case right now (thats a joke kids, right it down). So why would I fall to your feet in loving mercy online, simply because you went from being insulting to patronizing?

I'd hate to see how socially awkward you are if you can't accept politeness and instead choose to respond with more indignation. You sure do have lots goin' for ya champ. :)

Meh, a little on the introverted side, but awkward? nope. but thanks, i DO have a lot going for me, in fact!

Also, since you've been throwing it around all night, are you even aware what "indignation" means?

"displeasure against wrong doing; righteous anger".

Yeah, thats a really immature and bad reaction to have towards someone like you....:whatever:

I've been a little indignant, sure, but tried to let that die after a sentence or two and then continue on in the conversation. but we all can't be winners, i guess.

You know. When ending smug rants. You should really get that saying right.
aw damn! i made a common error and misused the auxiliary verb, just like 95% of the country does when using the stupid term! you got me this time, you rascals!

And if 95% of the country thinks the slavery is the primary cause of the Civil War....?

Dude. I was just giving you smug rant tips. We have to help our own. :o

Dude. Spider-Who. You're like Michael freaking Myers with this issue. And you know how annoying his constant returns got.

And at this point your posts are just getting depressing. Let it go, princess.

I know that the flag originally didn't represent racism.

I know that the civil war was not JUST about slavery but had more to do with states rights.

With all that said, to the people who are decedents of African slaves, the civil war WAS about slavery, for the most part we couldn't give two $#!* about the other reasons.

Was the flag originally a symbol of racism, no it wasn't, but symbols and their meanings have a way of changing and evolving over time. When something starts making regular appearances at public lynchings, hate rallies, and is damn near co-opted by the klan it's gonna take on a new meaning to certain people, it happens.

The swastika is a religious symbol, but because some nutjob hack of an artist got a bug up his butt and slaughtered millions of people while waving a flag with that symbol emblazoned on it, and because to this day neo nazi dip****s commit violent hateful crimes while showing off the same symbol, many view it as a symbol of hate.

I get the argument that it has historical value and such, but can there be at least a little understanding from those who choose to defend that flag that it has an entirely different meaning to others and understandably so?

I see your point, Wylie, but the "stain", so to speak, is so bad on those symbols...so it makes it much more difficult to defend or for someone to not look at them in that particular context

Oh, I thought this was funny. At Six Flags in Atlanta, they have sections of the park themed after one of the flags. French, British, Spanish, United States, Confederate States, and Georgia.

Well..as I was there in July, I noted the Confederate section is no more. Now it's called Peachtree Square. Guess someone finally complained that the Confederate area wasn't PC or something :whatever:

What was the Confederate area anyway? A plantation? A perpetual Civil War reenactment? How do you turn it into a theme park?

can anything be done to erase the negative connotations or perceptions that the Confedrate flag has??

The style of the buildings and attractions are structured to echo each section's theme. The Monster Plantation, for example.

It's a point of pride of who they are, a token to who they were, and a sense of kinship for them to rally with. I don't see a problem with keeping the flag.

They couldn't get anyone to work in that section without pay... :oldrazz:

The constitution is a dead document anyway. 95% of the intentions of the founding fathers that are written into the constitution are ignored by our legislature and government.

Symbols are perverted all the time. The swastika was used as a symbol of peace for centuries before the Nazis used it.

Can the confederate flag's image be restored to what it was originally intended? Not unless a KKK guy jumps in the Mississippi river to save a bus load of inner city kids while carrying the flag.

it would take a lot of doing

Kinship that revolves around the symbol of rebellion and revolt against the United States. I've got no problem with individuals carrying, using, worhsipping the flag... For that matter I've got no problem with them being rebelious and harboring intentions and desires that are similiar to the condfederate states... HOWEVER, there's no good reason for that flag to be used as part of the state flag or offical emblem of a government body.

And there's no real good reason to abolish something they cherish as well. If it's something they rally behind, and feel unity towards, there's really no good reason to tell them, "No, can't have it."
