SP3 dropped from VFX oscar contention

Don't get me wrong, Bourne Ultimatum was my second favorite movie of 07 (no country for old men # 1), but WHERE WAS THE ****ING VFX! (Besides the glass window in tangier)

That's true testament to 'great special effects'. They were sssoooo good, you couldn't tell where they were. Seriously.

No, it simply doesn't have a lot of special effects period. Bourne shouldn't be in this category. It's not a huge special effect movie. This is what happens when they want to give a good film a Nom, but don't have a category for its genre. This is why they should make a Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Action movie category like they did for Animation/animated features.

I'm not sure I like that idea. I still hope animated features can get nominated for best picture even though they have their own category. Same with sci-fi/action/fantasy. I think when you categorize films like that it takes away any chance of best pic if it was ever to deserve it. Like Return of the King; it was nice to see a fantasy film taken seriously as a film despite a genre that often isn't. Like Brad Bird often states, animation isn't a genre like sci-fi fantasy, and if sci-fi fantasy/action whatever was it's own category, then I think it would equally hamper that particular sci-fi/whatever film's ability to be nominated for best pic even if it deserved it.

Anyway, about Spidey-3 not even nominated for visuals. That's bull! Evan Almighty? You could watch a trailer and tell the effects were terrible! Who made these decisions?
And a question: do practical effects count for visual effects, because Bourne basically only had a scope scene and a couple of explosion touch ups for GGI/non-practical stuff.
I seem to remember a lot of reviews of Spider-Man 3 where the critic was impressed the birth of Sandman scene. Although I was pretty disappointed with the actual film, the symbiote and Sandman should have been easily enough for a nomination. This is borderline ridiculous.

The shot of the arc headed toward the screen in the trailer and tv spots for Evan was 1997 bad.

Animated films got their own category, which means, there's a reason to try to make a really good/great animated film, you can be rewarded for it. So tell Brad Bird to shut the f--- up...or give back his reward, saying that he wants a "Best Picture" one instead in protest!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action should have theirs too, especially since they've been around a hell of lot longer than Animated films, bad, good and great. If you think about it, SM2 was one of most critically acclaimed films in 2004 (few if any live action films came close). Yet, The Incredible got their reward, but a film like SM2 had to settle for a Visual Effect award, which makes no damn sense. I'm telling you that they way it is now is pretty flaud. Hell, most of the films they choose for Best Picture the majority don't agree with anyway.

Basically, what I'm saying is, if there was a category called best "sci-fi/fastasy/action" category, there would be a reason and a need to make much better action, sci-fi and fantasy films, because at the end of the day, or year should I say, you could be rewarded for it.

You wanna know who I think should present this idea to the Academy. Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, George Lucas and Peter Jackson. There's no reason why there should be an Animated category and not a S/F/A category.

Nope, there were fake looking Doc Ock faces in SM2, it got a Nom and won.
That's because it was great at that time and was obviously better than the competition. It seems to me that they spent all the time on the first 2 scenes with Sandman. You have tlo admit, Doc Ock looked great and those tentacles at the time were amazing.

I don't know about better than the competition, but the cgi face shots, I do know it was obviously CGI...which was my point. Sadly, a lot to do with SM2 winning the Award, was having no category for it's genre, besides LOTR not being present. Very much like what they're doing with Bourne, putting it in a tech category to satisfy some folks. With the very few CGI shots it has, it's simply not that type of film.

I swear, if Pirates makes it in, there is no justice.

Im sorry, when you are looking at a movie for this catagory, you ONLY look at the VFX. And if you look at SPidey 3, for VFX alone, it is amazing.

From the Birth of Sandman, to the collapse of the skyscrapper, to the Battle Royal climax with Spidey/NG/Sandman/Venom .... all screams Oscar nomination.

Im not screaming that it should WIN (deff. reason it should), im just saying, there is more than enough reason that it is justified to be nominated at least.

I just can't believe what happened. Everything having to do with the Sandman and the symbiote was simply awesome! In fact,I though what the FX crew did in creating the symbiote was new and had never really been done before? That, for me,would be enough for a nomination. Just,so...stupid.:cmad:

Sandman and the symbiote were great looking:o It's crazy SM3 isn't in the list but it would never win anyways. The detail in the Transformer's robots is simply amazing.

I can care less whether it won, not being including is insane. Especially out of 7 films. And where the hell is Harry Potter? That should have been in there too. The two movies that shouldn't is Bourne and Even Almighty. There was probably less than a million dollars spent on Bourne's CGI. Oh well, never try to figure out the Academy Awards.

Its really disappointing that SP3 is no longer contention. I'm hoping 300 wins, the VFX is amazing in that movie.
